About 22 miles off shore Rockland Maine lies Matinicus Isle Plantation - the furthest island out from the coast. It is 2 miles long by a mile wide - 9 square miles of Beauty, Isolation, Independence. You need to love being alone. The population was 53 at the 2020 census. It's a 750-acre granite rock with the occasional beach shoreline, but mostly spruce and wildflowers and everything that grows in between. 1750 saw it’s first resident, among the native Americans. It’s now a mixture of permanent residents - lobstermen and summer residents - business people and artists that need to get away from their crowded lives elsewhere. Waterfront property goes for millions of dollars - IF you can pry it out of the locals hands. Good luck trying. Or rather - please don’t try. Leave it as it is, you can visit, but don’t change it. It’s wonderful the way it is. Just hike, sightsee, meet the locals and just BE. We dropped another message in a bottle between Matinicus and Monhegan Islands. It ended up in Friendship Maine - 15 miles in 42 days. Not the speediest. “Moments in Time” radar reflectors had slide down during a rough passage in the Chesapeake Chop. Unfortunately, the reflectors are now even with our radar, thus creating huge blind spots to port and starboard. This required another trip up the mast to correct but this time I wanted to test my new safety backup. While the Admiral still raised and lowered me using the main halyard, I was able to use my backup tether to the screecher halyard and control my backup line myself. Avec Jerem des @vadrouilleurs on démonte, nettoie et remet en état le carbu pour que le moteur tourne enfin correctement. Résultat : il refonctionne parfaitement ! With near-perfect conditions, if a little light, D10 Belladonna headed out to play. The Ullman Offshore Series 25-miler provided the ideal opportunity to stretch her legs and make the most of both the weather and a free day. While Belladonna isn’t racing the series, it was exactly the sort of day that rewards going sailing anyway and we think you’ll enjoy a sunny sail down the coast with us. With four of us on board it’s a fairly rare opportunity to get an up close look at handling the D10 - more hands = more time for media! By happy coincidence, it turned into a race of co-owned multihulls. The three MOCRA boats on the start line were D10 Belladonna, her sister ship D995R Easy Tiger, and Corsair F28 Panoramix. Panoramix was sailed by Andy and Hannah of Highwater Sails, with Andy co-owning the boat alongside Brendan, our Projects Manager and on this day joined by Bruce, owner of Dazcat 1150 Bare Necessities, also on board. As ever, the boats and crews mixed it up: friends, customers, suppliers, colleagues, sometimes competitors and sometimes crewmates. Out on the water, it all levels out. After ripping out every hose and fitting in our boat, we committed to completely rebuilding our fresh water pressure system from scratch. Instead of traditional marine hose, we chose a PEX-A plumbing system with expansion sleeves—a residential solution that’s marketed as being easy for DIY installers and far more reliable long term. We’re firm believers that when household systems make sense on a sailboat, they’re often the better choice. To do it right, we invested in the expensive electric PEX expansion tool (the only realistic option for working in tight hull spaces) and ordered hundreds of fittings—sleeves, elbows, tees, manifolds, valves, and couplers in both 3/4" and 1/2". We ran nearly 200 feet of PEX pipe through both hulls, from engine room to engine room, and all the way forward into the bow locker. It was one of the biggest infrastructure projects of our refit. We made the final connection, stood back, and felt confident. We were wrong. To pressure test the system, we rented an air compressor and immediately discovered far more leaks than we thought possible. We chased air hissing through bilges, engine rooms, and heads. Soapy water bubbled at fittings we were sure were perfect. What followed was seven days of troubleshooting, ten hardware store runs, and a crash course in the realities of PEX-A installation. Here’s what we learned: Technique with the expansion tool matters more than you think PEX connections don’t seal well in very cold temperatures Reusing a fitting is nearly impossible once you cut off the sleeve—one tiny score mark can cause a leak Confidence is not the same thing as a sealed system After days of cutting, re-expanding, re-routing, and re-testing, we finally sealed the entire freshwater system...or so we thought. This episode is a real-world look at DIY boat plumbing, PEX installation on a sailboat, and the kind of setbacks that come with a full refit.
