Inside Sail America’s Plan to Grow the Sport and the Industry: https://www.practical-sailor.com/subscriber-only/inside-sail-americas-plan-to-grow-the-sport-and-the-industry/ Lightning striking a sailboat sounds like something out of a disaster movie—but what actually happen when it does? In this episode, we break down what really happens when lightning hits a sailboat, how the electrical energy travels through the mast and rigging, and why some boats survive with minor damage while others suffer catastrophic failures. We’ll look at the physics behind lightning strikes, how the current tries to reach the water, and why poor grounding systems can lead to blown hulls, destroyed electronics, or even boats sinking at the dock. Using real-world examples from marine surveys, insurance reports, and sailing publications, we explain how lightning travels through a sailboat’s structure, what components usually fail first, and why modern boats packed with electronics are especially vulnerable. We’ll also cover the most effective ways sailors can reduce lightning damage, including proper mast grounding, bonding systems, keel grounding paths, and practical storm precautions that experienced cruisers use. If you’ve ever wondered whether your mast really acts like a lightning rod—or what happens if lightning actually hits your boat—this video explains the science and the real-world consequences. Topics covered: • What happens when lightning hits a sailboat • How lightning travels through a mast and rigging • Why boat electronics are often destroyed by lightning strikes • Real lightning strike damage to sailboats • Mast grounding and lightning protection systems • How to reduce lightning damage on your boat Whether you’re a coastal sailor, cruiser, or liveaboard, understanding lightning risk and protection can help you better prepare your boat for offshore storms. #Sailing #SailboatMaintenance #BoatElectrical #LightningStrike #PracticalSailor #BoatOwnership #CruisingSailboat Practical Sailor is your trusted resource for reviews of sailboats and sailing gear. https://www.practical-sailor.com Chat with us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/PracticalSailor/

Jason Carroll’s MOD70 Argo (USA) has taken Multihull Line Honours in the 2026 RORC Caribbean 600, completing the 600-mile course in an elapsed time of 01 Day 12 Hrs 01 Mins and 46 Secs after a ferocious, race-long battle with Jon Desmond’s MOD70 Final Final – Zoulou, just over three minutes behind. The two MOD70 trimarans were separated by just one mile at the finish off Fort Charlotte, Antigua - an extraordinary margin after nearly 600 miles of racing flat-out racing around 11 Caribbean islands. What unfolded was not simply a contest of speed, often exceeding 30 knots, but a shifting tactical duel from island to island which was decided by a smart move by Argo in the closing miles. #Caribbean600 #RORCracing

How to Build a Laminated Boat Transom | Plywood Core + Solid Mahogany Veneers | West System Epoxy In this episode of Nomad Boat Building, Mark Reuten walks through the complete process of building a laminated wooden transom for a 15-foot Puget Sound sport fishing boat. This transom combines a marine plywood core with solid mahogany veneers on both faces, creating a structure that is strong, stable, repairable, and beautiful under varnish. Instead of leaving thin plywood face veneers exposed, Mark laminates thick solid wood to the surface. The result? A durable, long-lasting bright-finished transom that can be sanded and refinished many times without risking damage to the core. This method blends modern epoxy construction with a traditional wooden boat appearance. You’ll see the full workflow, including: Selecting and grain-matching mahogany Slip matching vs. book matching veneers Jointing and panel layout Wet-out and bonding with West System Epoxy Thickening epoxy with fillers for structural laminations Clamping strategies for large glue-ups Adding a solid wood transom cap Mark also explains why he prefers laminated construction over epoxy-coated plywood, and how this approach improves long-term serviceability and appearance. This project uses West System 105 Resin with a mix of 205, 206, and 207 hardeners, along with fillers like 405 Filleting Blend, to achieve strong, reliable glue joints for marine use. Whether you're building a wooden boat, restoring a transom, or learning advanced epoxy woodworking techniques, this video is packed with practical, real-world boatbuilding knowledge from a builder with over 30 years of experience. 👍 Like the video if you enjoy traditional wooden boat building 🔔 Subscribe for more step-by-step boat construction 🛠 Supported by West System Epoxy https://www.westsystem.com/ #BoatBuilding #WoodenBoat #BoatRestoration #Epoxy #WestSystem #Woodworking #MarineEpoxy #DIYBoat #Laminating #Mahogany My website: https://www.nomadboatbuilding.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nomadboatbuilding/ It's not about the money but living isn't free...
