La leggenda narra che la ninfa Scilla fosse amata da Glauco, ma il suo rifiuto fece sì che Circe, per vendetta, la trasformasse in un mostro marino. Così, Scilla divenne il simbolo della pericolosità del mare nello stretto, accoppiata alla vicina Cariddi. Durante l’epoca greca e romana, Scilla era nota come una base di passaggio per le rotte commerciali nel Mediterraneo. Successivamente, i Bizantini e i Normanni ne riconobbero il valore strategico, costruendo fortificazioni e torri di avvistamento. Il Castello Ruffo, originariamente una fortezza militare, fu poi trasformato in residenza dai nobili Ruffo nel XV secolo. I muse over what it can mean to rewild our minds so that we can be part of the wild we live in; I am humbled and comforted by witnessing so many sunsets and sunrises; and finally upon reaching warmer weather I begin to come alive again, like my own personal spring time awakening from the hibernation of winter in northern Europe. The Rio-Antirrio Bridge is one of the world’s longest multi-span cable-stayed bridges. • It connects the Peloponnese peninsula (Rio) with mainland Greece (Antirrio), near the city of Patras. • Officially opened in August 2004, just before the Athens Olympic Games. • Named after Charilaos Trikoupis, a 19th-century Greek Prime Minister who first proposed the idea • The bridge is about 2,880 meters (1.8 miles) long. • Built in a seismically active region, over deep water with unstable seabed — making it a major engineering challenge. • Special techniques were used to make the structure earthquake- and tsunami-resistant, including floating foundation platforms and flexible pylons.
