We have a Nemo brand jib furler on Paikea. It is the original one that came with the old mast. When we built our carbon rotating mast we retrofitted the existing stainless steel wire stays from our aluminum mast to our new rig and kept the old furler. When we went sailing recently our headstay wouldn't unfurl, it turns out that instead of ball bearings in the furler we have squashed balls. Now comes the challenge of fixing an old broken furler on the island of Antigua. The beginning of the Southbound adventure. It's exciting and scary at the same time. We have about a month to cover 1000 Nm to make it to the Erie Canal before it closes. We finally get to drop anchor in the Georgian Bay. It's absolutely stunning but unfortunately short lived. Filmed August 2023. Yachts For Sale YouTube Channel rewind video and blooper! At the start of this year I decided to focus on my YouTube channel since it had become such a strong marketing tool and a great enquiry generator. The results have been excellent, but in particular I am delighted with the small community of "yachties" that has developed around the channel, subscribing to it and often leaving comments and thought-provoking questions. This video reviews the year's activity, and is an opportunity for me to sincerely thank all of you who have helped me to grow the channel so far.

This is part two of our road trip exploring inland Turkey and its many world heritage sights. On this episode we visit Cappadocia, one of the most unusually beautiful places we have traveled to in the world! Cappadocia is known for its distinctive “fairy chimneys,” tall, cone-shaped rock formations clustered in Monks Valley, Göreme and elsewhere. Other notables sites include Bronze Age homes carved into valley walls by troglodytes (cave dwellers) and later used as refuges by early Christians. We know a lot of people who have avoided Turkey because of its current political situation but we have found it to be a completely safe and hospitable place, in fact we really feel for the many, many family run businesses that are suffering from the lack of visitors now. Turkey is not only stunning it is also amazingly affordable - come see what our road trip was like and maybe you will want to visit too! We are the Robbins family sailing on our boat named Nikau. We are a family of 5. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board. They are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day! We've traveled from New Zealand to Sardinia in Italy to pick up our boat and we plan over a few seasons to sail her back to New Zealand. We hope you enjoy following us on our adventures! We would love to hear from you. Especially if you are interested in doing something crazy like we are! Maybe we can help answer some questions you have? Thanks and enjoy.

This week we finally tackle the recently discovered rotted stringers under the galley settee. In this video, we explore what is really going on under the floor/sole. We also come up with a strawman plan on how to go about replacing the rotted stringers. This video includes diagrams of the structure, video of it and my contemplation on how to resolve the issue. After removing the rotted stringers, we determine the right wood to use, cut new ones, round them for fiberglass, and start the process of cutitng the old fiberglass and preparing for the new install. Join us in this little adventure and don't forget to tune in next week as we either continue or finish the work. ** NOW SOLD ** Fidra is a 2006 Hanse 370e that is now listed exclusively for sale with the team at YOTI on Sydney Harbour. Representing one of the most popular models globally by the German manufacturers, the 370e's still prove to be extremely sort after. The 'e' represents the epoxy used in the hulls layup making for a lighter / stiffer / stronger and virtually osmosis proof hull for life. Fidra is the two cabin option consisting of the generous owners cabin forward, good sized saloon opposite dual seating which doubles as the nav area, impressive head and shower, a big extended galley leading to the internal access to the storage garage (also accessible via the cockpit) and finally the second large double cabin. The storage garage comes with a mattress so the space doubles as accommodation when needed. Lee cloths are fitted throughout. The stand out features on Fidra (further to the usual easy / quick / quality that comes with the brand) is her overall condition and also her solid list of extras; overlapping genoa (in addition to the self tacking jib), spinnaker, storm jib on a removable inner forestay, a proper electric autopilot plus a new Hydravane windvane steering system with independent removable rudder, the full six winches (a major upgrade on original purchase) plus an additional electric multipurpose winch in the cockpit which assists with sail hoisting and reefing etc. Standing rigging was replaced new in 2014. The chart plotter at the helm and many other electronics were installed new in just 2019. There is a second chart plotter at the nav station. These yachts are simply a joy to sail either racing with a crew or quite literally cruising just one up. The mainsheet is naturally controlled by the helm on an upgraded traveller. In the owners words; "Fidra has spent most of her life in the Swan River in Perth doing mainly jib and main short river racing. She has sailed a few times to our local island 'Rottnest' and has competed in several Port Geographe regattas (spinnakers included) where we regularly finished in the top 3 or 4 boats in our division; one year we won our division for the week outright. Much celebration followed - "Quick boats those Hanses", cried the crowd! Fidra has recently arrived in Sydney from Perth via the Great Australian Bight. We averaged 6 knots over the 2200 NM voyage. She handled the conditions with ease. " The beauty of this package is the solid cruising set up coupled with a stunningly simple and exciting yacht to sail. Contact Peter Mactier at YOTI for further details and to arrange inspection on Sydney Harbour.

We didn't expect to be able to continue shopping for our cruising catamaran due to the pandemic but with some strict social distancing we were able to look over this 2001 Lagoon 410 Cruising Catamaran. We have our sights on a Leopard 400 located in Florida but with the way things are going right now we don't have high hopes to take a tour for a while. Regardless we were excited to see this Lagoon 410 cruising catamaran and we will be keeping an eye on the price as we reasonably expect it to fall. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #TheCruisingKiwis
