With breeze future around to the north than forecast we could set the reaching kite outside the jib. After a few days of motor sailing due to the wind direction it was great to be under sail power doing 7+ knots on a straight transit to Kilmore Quay. This will be our longest day yet, thanks to the wind gods for making it such a great day.

Brunsbuttel lock) Weather: partly cloudy with a stray splash Wind: SW nil Left: 08.30 At lock: 11.00 Arrived at Rendsburg: 18.00 Particulars: remarkably smooth passage through Brünsbuttel lock We naturally want to sail with as much current as possible to Brünsbuttel. So we left Cuxhaven at rising tide. Due to virtually no wind, we have to do everything by engine. It is what it is. We are the only ones in the lock at Brünsbuttel and that after only 15 minutes of bobbing. Yessssss! Cruising across the NOK also goes smoothly. The weather is mostly cloudy, but fine in temperature. The low-flying helicopter comes over twice. Patty cooks a pasta meal. We call the marina to see if there is room ….no problem. We moor at 6 pm and decide to go to the Edeka supermarket straight away. Get some fresh stuff and a drink-lif-lafs dinner for on board when we return. After a beautiful sunset, we are in the cage in good time. #kielcanal #rendsburg #sailing

Hiva Oa is the largest island in the Marquesas, and one of the two most powerful in Polynesian times before the intrusion of Europeans. With fabulous scenery, as all Marquesan islands, and quite incredible archeological remains, we learned a lot about its culture and traditions with our great guide Joan during a full day island tour. We also visited the Gaugin museum and replica house where we learned about how Polynesia shaped his revolutionary ways of interpreting human form, colors and sceneries.

Most of the 1500 small islands of the region have coastlines that are lined with mangroves growing in the shallow waters and stretching far behind. Raja Ampat is well known as the world's most biodiverse marine ecosystem. The mangrove forests found near these diverse reef systems are home to large numbers of marine species that hunt and seek shelter in the root systems and shallow waters surrounding.

We needed to change our boom while wintering in Torrevieja. The company which were going to do it seemed serious but but..... after a lot of trouble and waiting we could finally leave and head north. The Maskelline Islands is a small archipelago nested in the southern tip of the major Island of Malekula, in Vanuatu. The area have several villages that are very. colorful have plenty of agriculture in their traditional gardens and good fishing. The canals in between the islands also boast a healthy population of dugons, giant marine animals closely related to the Manati of Florida. They hosted us for a whole day beautifully warm event that included a walk around their island, a traditional feast, dancing and signing. Not to be missed when sailing Vanuatu!

The village of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat announced 'La Grande Nuit Vénitienne', so an evening with a Venice theme without having to travel to Italy ;). It was a energetic parade through the streets with music, lanterns and elegant dancers in traditional Venetian costumes or Caribbean carnival with a modern touch. And lots of lights!

While heading down the coast from Hilton Head, SC to Fort Pierce, FL, we hit Cape Canaveral late in the evening of November 7, 2023. Little did we know, our trip coincided with the launch of Falcon 9, CRS-29, a Starlink Launch. Approaching Cape Canaveral, we started to hear notices from the Coast Guard about the prohibited zones, including mariners hailing the Coast Guard requesting permission to pass...which they denied. We spent several hours trying to figure out the coordinates of the zones. To add to the anxiety, the Coast Guard (or someone) must have been making broadcasts via AIS indicating that the area were closed...ignorant to these notifications, I had no idea as to whether these messages were broadcasts or specifically to us. We have AIS and so it is possible to send messages directly to us. Long story short, we were sufficiently offshore and, in fact, probably much further offshore than we needed to be. We went around the cautionary zone but apparently could have transited the cautionary zone, even though is suggested to avoid it altogether. We never saw a Cape Canaveral launch and while I suspect being closer is probably pretty cool, we had a cool perspective as the rocket and the booster came past us, out to sea. This week we leave our anchorage in Church Creek, just south of Charleston, and make our way down North Edisto River where we take the Dawho River to Watts Cut which spills into South Edisto River where we anchor for the night. From there we take a series of cuts; Fenwick, Ashepoo-Coosaw and Ashe Island which gets us to Coosaw River and Beaufort, SC. We leave Beaufort and make our way across Port Royal Sound and behind Hilton Head Island where we anchor for a few days just off Calibogue Sound in Bull Creek.
