A violent squall appeared out of nowhere in the pre-dawn darkness, smashing our boat from the complete opposite wind direction, tearing our mainsail free of the boom and allowing it to flap crazily amongst the rigging. All right in the middle of a busy shipping lane. In treacherous conditions on deck, it had to be secured fast before it tore itself to pieces. - Not fun!
