Ep 104 - Today we take an unexpected cruise with the Dinghy gang from our dock and wind up a Caladesi Island. The water is shallow here and the island is a protected bird sanctuary. We didn't go out and explore the island but we did park the dingy up on shore and put our feet in to cool off a bit. It's still pretty cold water in early April so we didn't get much deeper than our feet. We also had some friend dolphins come by and pay us a visit. This week aboard SV GOAT we sail north through the Euboean Gulf, a mountain-flanked stretch of sea known for its wildly unstable wind patterns. One moment we're cruising with a 10-knot breeze on the beam; the next, a 25-knot gust slams us from the opposite direction. It was a demanding leg, but we made it safely to Chalkida (Chalcis)—just in time for one of the most spectacular sailing rituals in Greece. At exactly 2AM, the legendary Euripus (Chalkida) retractable bridge opens for boat traffic. A line of vessels forms on both sides of the strait, VHF radios buzzing with port authority instructions. As the bridge retracts, one by one, sailboats and ships pass through in the dead of night, under city lights and watchful spectators lining the promenade. It’s not just a crossing—it’s a show. But that’s not all… We also install and configure our new Safiery Phased Coherent Radar Tank Level Sensor for our starboard water tank—a massive upgrade to our onboard monitoring system. Unlike traditional float or ultrasonic sensors, this next-gen radar sensor uses phased-coherent radar technology to measure tank levels with sub-millimeter precision, even in sloshing tanks or complex shapes. It connects directly to the NMEA2000 network, seamlessly integrating with our Signal K and KIP dashboard for real-time and historical water level tracking. This sensor is a game-changer for anyone serious about off-grid sailing and resource management. IN THIS EPISODE – Navigating the unpredictable winds of the Euboean Gulf – Reaching Chalkida and preparing for the iconic 2AM bridge opening – Crossing the Euripus Strait alongside commercial and private vessels – Installing the Safiery Phased Coherent Radar Tank Sensor – Explaining why this tech is a leap forward in onboard tank monitoring – Sailing deeper into the heart of Greece ABOUT THE CHALKIDA BRIDGE The Euripus Bridge opens just once per night due to intense and fast-reversing tidal currents. The strait is only ~40m wide, with water speeds up to 12km/h. Local lore says even Aristotle struggled to understand its behavior. Today, sailors must wait for clearance and join the nocturnal parade—a bucket-list experience in Greek cruising. ABOUT THE SAFIERY TANK SENSOR The Safiery Phased Coherent Radar Tank Sensor is a no-contact, battery-powered radar sensor capable of tracking liquid levels in fresh, grey, or black tanks with millimeter precision. It is immune to condensation, foam, and sloshing errors—unlike ultrasonic or float sensors. Fully NMEA2000 compatible, it enables smart, precise tank level monitoring—perfect for long-range cruisers. Today we’re doing sailboat engine maintenance and a full sailboat engine service while searching for engine parts in a foreign country. Servicing a marine diesel engine is an essential part of boat maintenance, especially when you’re living aboard and preparing for long motoring days ahead. We’re currently liveaboard on our sailboat in Malaysia, tackling DIY sailboat maintenance while cruising Southeast Asia. From chasing down hard-to-find engine parts to performing a diesel engine service, this episode shows what real sailboat engine maintenance abroad looks like — tight spaces, oily hands, and all. In this episode of real sailboat life, we: – Search for engine parts while traveling abroad – Perform routine sailboat engine maintenance – Service our marine diesel engine – Complete an oil change and filter replacement – Replace an engine belt – Work through multiple boat maintenance projects – Install new hardware onboard – Fix a slipping halyard clutch critical for sailing safety – Dive under the boat to inspect the propeller Living a liveaboard sailboat life means constantly learning how to handle sailboat engine repair, engine service, and unexpected boat projects. DIY sailboat maintenance is not always easy, especially when you’re doing boat maintenance abroad, but keeping your sailboat engine reliable is key to safe cruising. As a couple sailing full time, this is part of how we prepare our cruising sailboat for the next leg of our journey through Southeast Asia and beyond. From sailing in Malaysia to preparing for offshore passages, every bit of engine maintenance helps keep us moving. If you enjoy sailboat maintenance, marine diesel engine work, liveaboard sailing, and honest cruising life, don’t forget to subscribe, like, and comment below. 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. EPISODE 336 Last week, we dove with black tip reef sharks - curious, peaceful, harmless. This week? Bull sharks. One of the most aggressive and dangerous shark species on the planet. We sailed to a new island in Fiji specifically for this: to dive with bull sharks for the first time. They're territorial, unpredictable, and capable of thriving in both saltwater and freshwater, which makes them one of the few sharks that venture into rivers and shallow coastal areas where humans are. They're in the top three for unprovoked attacks on humans. And today, we're getting in the water with them. This isn't something we're doing casually. We're diving with Kuata Barefoot Resort, one of the only places in Fiji where you can experience bull sharks in a controlled, professional environment. The dive masters know these sharks individually—they've named them, studied their behavior, and created a safe way for people to witness these apex predators up close. But here's the thing: this operation feeds the sharks. And when we found out, we had mixed feelings. Feeding changes their behavior, conditions them to associate humans with food. It's not how we prefer to see wild animals. But this team does it with extreme caution, respect, and years of experience. And honestly? The experience was unforgettable. Getting in the water, my nerves were through the roof. But once we were positioned and watching these powerful animals move through their environment, a calm washed over me. They're beautiful, commanding, effortless. You feel the respect immediately—you're in their world. We survived. And we'll never forget it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ⚓ Thanks for watching! - Have you ever wondered how our carbon masts are made ? We went to find the answer at our historic designer : Maréchal Mâts. Located in Marans, a few dozen kilometers from the RM shipyard, this iconic manufacturer has produced masts for very varied units (pleasure boats, merchant marine, ocean racing...) and for famous sailors. We followed Rémi Gerbeaud, CEO of the Z-Spars group, for an exceptional visit to the heart of his workshop. Vidéo : Charles Guilloteau

This video was uploaded from an Android phone. This video is from a Memorial Heritage Run held on Ford Island, Hawaii, by the Chief Petty Officers' Association of Navy Information Operations Command Hawaii for the First Class Petty Officers. The speech was given by one of the First Classes and as more information is given I will fill in. Sorry for the sound quality and picture quality as it was filmed on a potato. Behind the speechgiver is the Oklahoma Memorial and the pillars are representing the many men who now "man the rails" forever. When on approach the sailors of each U.S. Navy ship will render honors to those who died in Pearl Harbor by manning the rails, standing topside and saluting in a solemn sign of respect. The battleship is the U.S.S. Missouri. The Heritage Run is an event in which sailors of a command run in ranks singing cadence and, from one location to the next, recant and remember the events of December 7, 1941. 70 Years Since the Bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japanese Imperial forces.

Unspoiled, remote, yet bewitchingly accessible aboard The Seven Seas, the 2 dozen islands East of Flores are now recognized as one of Asia's top ten dive destinations. This area ranges from the Eastern tip of Flores itself, in the West, to the Island of Wetar in the East of the Nusa Tenggara Timor island chain. Not only World Class muck diving at our new sites in Lembata and Pantar, not only the classical walls and coral reefs that made this area famous, but now also plenty of high voltage diving on rocky corners, islets and pinnacles along the Southern shores and in the straits between these islands. Highly diverse habitats, with hard coral dominated reefs, pinnacles and walls covered in combinations of hard and soft corals and other invertebrates, various types of sandy habitats (volcanic black, reef white), sea grass beds and even some blue water mangroves! Great fish life on some of the rocky pinnacles and promontories in the South as well as on some of the new reef and wall dives that we have explored in the North. Last but not least some of the very best cetacean diversity and abundance all around and right through this area which forms a migrating and feeding area for several great whales (notably sperm and blue whales) as well as a preferred habitat from many species of dolphins that occur here in staggering numbers. This area like no other lends itself beautifully for a day of whale watching, whether that is close inshore around the deep volcanic slopes in search of blue whales or out wide where the sperm whales are diving! Too much to do and see but do take the time also for some cultural trips in these remote and interesting islands, with arguable the most stunning volcanic scenery that the entire Coral Triangle has to offer. http://www.thesevenseas.net/destination-east-of-flores.html

40th edition of the Tour de France à la Voile with not less than 29 trimarans competing. Each day, several boats will be equipped with on-board devices for sound and image link-ups. In this way the media and spectators will be plunged into the thick of the action out on the racetrack. Since 1978, thousands of sailors have discovered the French coast, got pushed back by the Channel currents, asked their position to Brittany's fishermen and heeled under the Mistral wind. From a joyful racing-cruising event, the Tour de France à la Voile turned into a great offshore sailing school for many young and talented sailors, and then a high-level competition with great champions taking part.
