#nudibranch #gymnodoris #huahine #frenchpolynesia For a nudibranch lover, finding these beautiful dorids under our boat every day has been absolute heaven. I am in awe as their migration continues to unfold. On the second day, while hundreds of nudibranchs were still present, the ones on the move were significantly smaller. They also seemed more focused on mating and laying eggs than on traveling. By the third day, as I swam the shallow shelf, I found a ton of evidence that they had passed through. Literally every piece of seagrass, every twig, and even the sand was decorated with bright orange egg tinsel, waving in the current. It was like seeing the remnants of Halloween in a neighborhood the day after. I even found eggs attached to the decorative forest growing out of the top of a large snail shell deep into the shelf, a clear sign the nudibranchs had traveled toward the reef. Just like in the days before, lots of other creatures, were out and about and intermingling with the invertebrates. It made me wonder if they had always been there and I was only now seeing them because I was looking more intently. By the fourth day, the winds had picked up, and the number of nudibranchs flying through the water column increased. The egg strands were also threatening to fly off their hosts. Although hundreds of nudibranchs remained on the sandy shelf, many had buried themselves in the sand or taken shelter under something. The primary activities today were moving and mating, rather than laying eggs. Every day, the scene changes, and I am blown away by what I get to see and photograph. I know the days are numbered before they all disappear, but until then, I'll take advantage of being in the water as much as I can. NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. We flew directly from Europe to Norfolk to ready While One for Season 2. We learned a lot from last year and spent the better part of July and these handful of days prior to heading south, provisioning and doing maintenance on While One. In this Episode is a How To change the engine and transmission oil on a Honda, 15 H.P. engine. There is also a How To on ascending the mast to fix a problem while trying to raise our headsail. It's a lot of hard work. We also successfully completed sailing around Cape Hatteras for the first time as a couple, without the assistance of a captain and his first mate. This trip was cause for much deliberation. We constantly watched our forecast models on PredictWind, read Chris Parker's forecasts and the National Hurricane Center and made our own interpretations. Our current insurance policy requires us not to navigate south of Cape Hatteras from July thru October. The weather was shaping up for a perfect rounding...but doing so would result in us being south of Hatteras before November. We reached out to the insurance agent on Thursday, requesting permission...it took them practically a week to give us a written endorsement and by that time, we had already made the trip. Suffice it to say, it was a good decision. We are on the way to Miami! While the boys make their way over to Florida on the boat, Ruby and Gina decided to spend a couple of day in Florida. We did some fun little activities while we were there! We visited the Makers shop in Brunswick, watched some movies and bought gifts for each other! We made it to the hotel in hopes of watching the SpaceX Rocket launch at 1am. We were super super excited but they decided to delay it by another day 😢. More progress towards carbon-fibre stanchions with fully sealed decks. Today we were using the router to round off the top edges of the FR4 stanchion bases. These will be epoxied onto the existing triangles that the the original stanchions were bolted to. A 26mm carbon-fibre tube will go through this FR4 and all the way through the deck into a hole filled with thickened epoxy. The stanchion tube will slide onto it. We're tackling one of the biggest challenges of living on a boat: creating functional storage without adding weight.
