Rudder repair continues. As you know our #rudder was hanging by a string, or better said by two little pieces of solder. This is significant rudder damage. So we had to remove it from the #sailboat and have it split in half to see what was wrong and whether we could fix it or not. The challenge with this type of project is finding someone local who could do the work. Reason you want someone local is because if you need to make adjustments; and more than likely you will...; you want someone who is within driving distance. Otherwise you will be shipping that rudder back and forth until they get it just right. Lucky for me I found Tim Smith over at Sarasota Marine Services and had Harry Weaver who is a magician with steel and fiberglass to work on our rudder and he helped is with other aspects of our sailboat restoration. In our last video you saw that we had to use a chain saw to split the rudder because it was not foam filled. Instead we found that #pearson used Fiberglass Chop and resin to build their rudders. This makes the rudder strong and it is great as long as you do not have to do a repair. So Harry went to work on the steel construction. He made the rudder plate larger and reinforce the constructions with 3 gossets that run on both side of the rudder plate to give it more strength and eliminate flex. He also discover water intrusion into the rudder so he is filling the voids with resin to remove all air bubbles from the interior of the rudder and also to rebuild the material that was removed during the process of splitting the rudder. Harry also shows us how extensive the damage can be when your have improperly grounded shore power. It could really destroy all of the metal components of your boat. Check it out! Vivace took the lead from the word go and kept in front of the fleet until they finished the race nearly five hours later. JYS Jan and Jarhead finished in second and third place respectively.

Ahoy Mates! In this video we get into the history of Tradition's service in the USCG's "Picket Patrols" along the east coast of the United States during WW2. While we are chatting we rebuild the corroborator on an old 2 stroke outboard motor. Poem by Craig Muhonen & Don Tompane Craig's father piloted a bomber in WW2, while Don's dad skippered Tradition. Craig was inspired by Don's stories of the great schooners and they worked together to create this beautiful poem. By challenging Banque Populaire XI for victory over fourteen days, S V R Lazartigue has certainly ensured the Ultim race on the Route du Café has been an exciting one. Leaders from the start to Madeira and then around Ascension, François Gabart and Tom Laperche pushed constantly and were often a thorn in their side for the leading duo, but in the end they were unable to do anything about the speed of Banque Populaire XI downwind. This is the third time in three transatlantic races since its launch in 2021 that S V R Lazartigue has finished irunners up. François: “We’re pleased to be here and have crossed the Atlantic, but a bit disappointed, as we would have liked to have won. We were up against people stronger than us. I don’t think we missed any strategic or tactical choices, but they were fast, very fast downwind. They sailed well and deserved to win. We are going to have to continue to progress and I hope Tom will win the next one. This has been a long series of second places since 2018. The positive thing is that each time, we’re not far off it. We’re close to winning, which is great. We have had some fantastic races, got it right, enjoyed ourselves, but it would nice to win.”

Propeller walk, also as known as propwalk shortly, is generally defined as a pushing force that affects the movements of your boat, produced by propeller. It will be important when you are motoring at low speed because of the combined forces. Fair winds and following seas !

In this episode we take a fast boat to the Togean Island of Una Una, where we hike into Gunung Colo Volcano learning about the rich history of the Island and the eruption that caused major devastation. After a steamy hike into the jungle we make our way back to the ocean to cool off freediving on the amazing coral reef that ascends from the depths. Enjoy!
