Matera is famous for the so-called Sassi, cave houses. The story goes that the rocks on the spot where Matera is now served as shelters for monastics who had fled from the Byzantine Empire since the eighth century. Gradually they carved out more and more 'dwellings' in the caves. Even as late as 1950, some thirty to forty thousand people still lived in the cave houses that are so characteristic of Matera. However, due to poor sanitary conditions (people often lived together with animals in the same room), the mortality rate was very high. Due to these dangerous living conditions, the decision was therefore made that everyone had to leave the Sassi. We walked through the streets and were amazed at their antiquity. The drone shows how uniquely this city is built, with a canyon on one side and a hill on the other.

In this episode of The Rogue Rigger I take you on the first sail of the recently restored Farr 400. The boat was shipped out from the east coast and brought to a Bay Area yard to be stripped of all its hardware, repainted, new hardware installed and then re-commisioned. I was lucky enough to get to work on her by replacing all of the running rigging and doing some hardware upgrades. This is a short video of "Astra's" first sail. In this episode we fly back to our sailboat Frida in Valencia. We prepare her for the autumn sailing season in the Mediterranean Sea. But when we start sailing north we didn´t even got out of the marina before we noticed a problem but we decided to continue towards our next stop Burriana where we lifted the boat and discovered our own personal reef. It was a hard and dirty job to clean with the time restrictions we had. Exhausted we got splashed and could continue our sail north along the Spanish East Coast. We are a middle aged couple that has left our hectic business lives to go sailing with our sailboat Fridá af Wisby and our cat Litza. Our goal is sail the Mediterrainean Sea and really enjoy life. Anders has been at the sea most of his life and sailed for the Swedish national dingy sailing team as a young man. Gitte has also grown up with boats and spent every summer sailing with her father as a teenager. Onboard we also have our cat Litza a 4 year old Devon Rex we call her the cattain because cats always decide over their humans. From crystal-clear waters to hidden beaches, airplane wrecks, and pig-filled islands—this leg of our adventure had it all! We set sail from Warderick Wells and made our way south to O’Brien Cay, a spot packed with incredible snorkeling, secret beaches, and some pretty wild surprises. 🐠 The Aquarium – Thousands of fish, the most unreal snorkeling experience! 🛩️ Sunken Plane – Brent swam through it… definitely a little eerie but super cool. 🏝️ Johnny Depp’s (ex) Island – Apparently, he sold it to J.K. Rowling? Either way, we weren’t exactly invited, so we found our own epic beach instead. 🦀 Hermit Crab Beach – So. Many. Crabs. But adventure aside, we were running dangerously low on fresh food, so it was time to move on. Staniel Cay, here we come! 🛥️ Staniel Cay – Time to stock up, meet up with friends, and explore! 🐷 Pig Beach – Because no trip to Staniel is complete without feeding the famous swimming pigs. 🌊 Sandbar Playdate – One of the best sandbars we’ve ever been to, and the ultimate kid boat hangout spot. And for those wondering how we homeschool on a boat—spoiler: it looks a lot like homeschooling on land, just with way better recess. 😉 Next stop: Black Point! 🏝️ Black Point – A quiet spot with a great little restaurant 🌬️ Blow Hole Hike – Surprisingly better than the last one we saw, which was, well… not great. 👣 Softest Sand Beach – No joke, the softest sand we have ever felt under our feet. 🔧 Aujourd’hui, on part en mission “alternateur et chargeur”… et devine quoi ? On a mis le doigt sur LE coupable : un petit fusible sur l’alternateur qui ne tenait plus dans ses cosses (oui oui, encore un bidouillage bien créatif comme on les aime). ⚡ Et ce n’était pas fini ! On découvre aussi que les fils du chargeur de batterie, censés aller bien sagement jusqu’à la batterie… étaient juste posés là comme des touristes. Autant te dire que les batteries, elles ne chargeaient rien du tout. ✅ Après avoir tout rebranché correctement, magie : le courant passe enfin ! Et hop, on en profite pour remonter le coupe-batterie, remettre le filtre à eau en place et rebrancher les tuyaux. 🛠️ Bref, une vidéo pleine de petits ajustements qui font toute la différence à bord.
