Welcome back to Newfoundland aboard Arabella! This week, we’re traveling by land and by sea, making our final passage before winter settles in for the season. While Robin took the ferry back to Nova Scotia to shuttle the truck, I single-handed Arabella from Isle aux Morts to Codroy. Robin met me there. We had a few days to kill in Codroy while waiting for a weather window for the passage up to Bay of Islands, so we decided to check out the local Starlite trail. The views were incredible! The landscape in Newfoundland is unlike any we’ve seen before. Even Akiva seems to be quite at home here! We also walked down to the Cape Anguille Lighthouse, which was perfectly picturesque and idyllic. The last thing we had to do before making our final passage is shuttle the truck one last time. Robin drove to Corner Brook and rode her bike back to Codroy via the Trans-Canada Highway. The ride was about 90 miles long, but a strong headwind added a layer of challenge to the effort. By the time Robin pedaled into the marina at Codroy, she was very ready for a hot cup of coffee! We wasted no time setting sail—as soon as Robin got back from her ride, we dropped the dock lines and took off. The sail was smooth and uneventful, minus a needle nose fish jumping on deck in the middle of the night. We sailed past the MSC Baltic III shipwreck, and into the Bay of Islands with its steep, dramatic cliffs. Our plan was to drop anchor at Woods Island, but we needed to enter the harbor carefully—there are some uncharted rocks at the harbor entrance. Fortunately, locals had installed range markers on the hillside to help boats like us line up our approaches safely. Woods Island has a healthy moose population—we followed moose tracks through the island’s lovely network of hiking and ATV trails. We also treasure hunted along the beaches, finding sea glass and remnants from shipwrecks. After Woods Island, we head to the Bay of Islands Yacht Club, which will be home for the winter. We have not stayed in any one place for more than three weeks since last November, and Corner Brook seems like the perfect place to put down roots for a while. I break out the winter dock lines and our extra fenders, and Arabella is safe and sound for the season. In Corner Brook, we start hunting down the new Newfoundland rock climbing guidebook. We are eager to get out climbing while the weather allows! A little souvenir from our trip to Kenya in February 2018 (I know, took us a while to upload!). Despite the light wind most of the days and very hot weather, we had an awesome trip and absolutely adored our 3 days safari tour. Cheap food, sun and friendly people are all you need! If you’ve never been to Kenya, here are some tips for you: - There is no such thing as favour there, everything has a price. Keep that in mind! - Negotiate your safari with one of the local agency (Marco Polo was a good one, and February is low season. You’ll get to see loads of baby animals too!) - Food is cheap in most places, but you got to be patient because the service may be slow! "Hakuna Matata" - TukTuk is the best way to go around. If you want the best deal, don’t ask your driver for the price but instead ask your hotel or other backpackers and let the driver know how much you are willing to pay for your ride. - If like us you like chilling at the beach, we would suggest booking a hotel with a private beach area. Beach boys in Kenya is really common, and you won’t have 10 min of peace to ready. - If you kitesurf, bring a pair of water shoes with you. You don’t want to step over a sea urchin!

Our Adventure begin we start sailing south with the goal to get to the Mediterrainien Sea in this first episode we Sail from Gotland to Bornholm and on the way we discover some free passengers onboard and we tell you a story from 1658 with all the ingredients a sneaky king, beer and a murder. We are a middle age couple that left our hectic business lives to go sailing with our boat Frida af Wisby and our cat Litza. In this episode we sail in the Baltic Sea.

I was finally able to get Reverie, our Pearson 34 #sailboat, on the yard to start working on the #restoration of the #hull. What I found was a lot of gelcoat blisters and a rudder needing repair. The blisters look worse than what they are. There are all surface related which means they are only at the level of the gelcoat. No delamination issues. So I will fair most of it, sand it , and put 3 coats of good barrier paint and 2 coats of bottom paint. The rudder is another issue. It moves about 2 inches on the rudder post , which means the steel inside the rudder is broken. It seems the rudder was repaired before, so I think I only have one choice which is to have a new rudder made. Maybe is time for a road trip to California to Fuss Rudders. We'll see. Also will need a new propeller as this one has damage from electrical current. More updates to come soon. Dan and Theresa Godbout sailed their Beneteau 331 down the St-Lawrence to Baie Comeau and back to Kingston in June 2019. His talk will give you an overview and the highlights of this amazing 6 week trip. Dan has been a member of Nepean Sailing Club since September 2003, but started sailing much earlier! “My sailing endeavours started a long time ago at age 11. My father bought a Snark sunflower from the Eaton’s catalog (for the younger crowd, this is the precursor of Amazon when Sears and Eaton had the monopoly on mail order). He taught both my brother and I how to sail and let us use the boat on our own several afternoons a week on a small city lake in Baie Comeau, as long as we kept our life jackets on. We complied and both enjoyed sailing; we were hooked.” “I bought my first keelboat (Shark #138) in Summer 1985, sailing for 2 years from the Rockliffe Yacht Club. I sold the boat in 1987 and move to BC for work. I continued sailing dinghys (420s and Albacores) on Cultus Lake in Chilliwack and took a coastal cruising course and sailed a Bayfield 32 out of Vancouver. I moved back to this end of the country in 1990 and stayed away from sailing for several years (3 kids, one salary). I finally got back into sailing in 2003 when Doug Patterson convinced me to buy a Tanzer 22. I have sailed and raced “Sherrie” at NSC for 19 years. Although we were finally doing very good at racing “Sherrie”, I’m now a co-owner of a J22 “Jetstream” and am ready to get my ass kicked once again in the J22 fleet.” Theresa and Dan acquired a Sabre 28 for cruising in 2006 and upsized their “cruising cottage” to a Beneteau 331 in 2012. They moved the Beneteau to Kingston in 2016 and enjoyed sailing Lake Ontario and the Thousand Island for 4 years. They brought the boat back to NSC in 2020 since they couldn’t go anywhere because of COVID but are quite happy to “sail the Ottawa River once again and enjoy cruising with friends.” This presentation is part of the NSC Winter Speaker’s program, which promotes ongoing learning about all things nautical, as well as cruising and competitive sailing.
