This video covers the moment the engine told me something was wrong. On startup I heard a sharp clack, clack, clack — the kind of sound that immediately tells you to stop and reassess. A suspected hydraulic lock is not something you push through. If you get it wrong, you destroy the engine. So the decision was immediate. Sails down, boat stopped, and a full shift from passage-making to problem management. From that point on it was about protecting the boat, conserving power, and understanding exactly what was happening before taking any further action. This is the difference between continuing blindly and recognizing when a situation has the potential to escalate into a serious failure. This is not about fixing things quickly. Wer an Galapagos vorbei fährt, und die meisten Segler tun das, begeht aufgrund der Einzigartigkeit der Fauna und Flora meiner Meinung nach einen Fehler! Ganz Galapagos ist ein Nationalpark. Wir leben mitten in den vielfältigen Tierarten. Seelöwen, Pinguine, Tölpel, Leguane, Riesenschildkröten, Rochen und Haie sind überall präsent. Um Hammerhaie und Seepferdchen zu sehen, muss man sich etwas mühen. Wie überall auf Galapagos rufen wir am nächsten Morgen auf Kanal 14 ein Wassertaxi. Der Taxifahrer kommt extra mit dem Motorrad an den Anleger und holt uns mit dem Wassertaxi ab. Wir sind sicherlich heute die einzigen Gäste. Auch für den Port Captain William sind wir heute die einzige berufliche Tätigkeit, er stempelt unsere Zarpe von San Cristobal zur Isla Isabela ab und bietet uns an, uns auf der Insel herumzuführen. Auf Floreana leben ca. 150 Menschen – hier kennt jeder jeden. Floreana hat eine sehr interessante Geschichte rund um die deutschen Siedlerfamilien Ritter und Wittmer. Eifersuchtsdramen und ominöse Todesfälle prägen diese Geschichte. Die Nachkommen der Familie Wittmer leben nach wie vor auf Floreana und führen hier das Hotel Wittmer. Frau Wittmer freut sich sichtlich als wir an ihrer Tür klopfen und sie ihr deutsch trainieren kann. Sie zeigt uns ihr kleines Museum und drängt uns doch morgen noch einmal wieder zu kommen. Brigitta war natürlich erst einmal vollkommen überrascht, obwohl eine Weltumsegelung wesentlich besser in Ihr berufliches Leben als Vorruheständlerin passte als in meins. In den letzten 6 Monaten hat Sie aber eine erstaunliche Entwicklung hinter sich gebracht und freut sich auf unser großes Abenteuer genau wie ich. In this video, I replace my existing dual battery-to-battery (B2B) charger setup with a single Victron Orion XS 12/12 50A — simplifying the system, reducing wiring, and improving efficiency. We start by looking at the existing installation (with a full circuit diagram), then strip it all back before installing and testing the new setup. Along the way, I cover some key principles that are often misunderstood, including: * Why cable lengths matter in parallel systems * Correct fuse placement and protection * Why you should never rely on a BMS as a safety cutoff * Safe isolation before working on lithium systems * Real-world install considerations on a liveaboard boat This isn’t just a swap — it’s a proper rethink of the system.
