Carnival in Grenada....definitely Spicemas...lots of half-naked dancers in the streets! August 2023
We finish out our time in the Exumas for winter 2021, at least for a while. We may be back. We have more great time doing our big three activities in the Exumas - snorkeling, hiking and kiteboarding. The first frontal system we have had since Florida blows through, but doesn't cause us much trouble.
Often when I am reading books in the Mariner's library I am also hearing the story for the first time myself- this book however, is different. Shackleton's escape from Antarctica is a story very well known to me and, to be blunt, has nourished my very soul in my darkest days at sea. There is no greater tale of seamanship, ingenuity, tenacity & loyalty- there are no greater heroes. This is that tale, told by a man who's skill upon the ocean is perhaps only matched by his skill with a pen; the Master of the 'Endurance', Captain Frank Worsley. If you would like to listen to more about sailing, the sea and regular discussions about safety & seamanship; check out The Mariner Podcast, available on all podcast platforms. https://podcasts.apple.com/in/podcast/the-mariner/id1710667118 To support the production of this material please consider heading over to Patreon. where for $5 a month you can get access to more audio books, videos and discussion. https://www.patreon.com/themariner Check out also, The Mariner Youtube Channel - where we have gear reviews, how to videos, seamanship training videos and on the water reports from all over the world. Welcome to NauticEd. In this video, Grant Headifen (Founder + Global Director of Education) shares the history of NauticEd and why the company was created in 2008: to build real competence for boaters—not just a certificate. NauticEd was born from running a fractional boat sharing company operating 30–40ft sailboats, where competence mattered: safer families, better decision-making, and fewer costly marina mistakes. That’s when we defined competence as a simple, practical framework: Theory knowledge (rules, navigation, right-of-way) Practical skills (on-water training with an instructor) Experience (real-world conditions that build judgment) Today, NauticEd delivers boating education through multimedia online courses and a global instructor network, growing from one course to 34 online courses and instructors worldwide. Give it a thumbs up if you liked this episode! Light wind, heavy wipeouts, a camera strapped to the kite, and one very questionable decision after another… classic Sailing into Freedom. 😅🪁⛵ In this episode, I head back out for another kitesurf session in Vietnam, chasing waves in conditions that are just on the wrong side of powered. The wind keeps dropping right when I need it most, the kite stalls on the wave, and things get sketchy fast. There’s a raw look at how dangerous wave kiting can get when the power disappears, lines go slack, and you’re suddenly in the washing machine with surf, drag and zero margin for error. Of course, being Sailing into Freedom, I’ve also got a camera mounted on the kite, ignore my own advice not to crash it, and then proceed to absolutely send myself into the water hard enough to blow an eardrum and leave me wondering what else I may have broken. If you like kitesurfing action, wipeouts, real-world wave riding, and unfiltered commentary from someone who definitely should know better by now, this one’s for you. #kitesurfing #sailingintofreedom #kiteboarding #wavekiting #kitesurfcrash #extremesports #sailing #vietnam #actionvlog Get your Sailing Into Freedom Crew T-shirt: https://teespring.com/stores/sailing-into-freedom Want more? As the longest island in Dalmatia, you’ll be sure to come across one or two things to do that can’t be missed! Brač is home to many unique attractions yet still remains relatively quiet compared to its neighbours Hvar and Korčula. Vidova Gora is the highest peak in Brač and the highest peak in the Dalmatian islands where you’ll be overcome with unbelievable views and the ability to spot crowd favourite Golden Horn beach in the distance. Golden Horn beach, or Zlatni Rat, is unlike anywhere else. With an ever changing coastline thanks to the winds and changing tides, the shoreline is blessed with turquoise waters perfect to enjoy the watersports available or simply a dip! Worthy of a cycle around the island, discover the historic monastery constructed into the cliff face which will leave you speechless with its impressive build. Grab a taste of the town with traditional peak and fruits of the land at various wineries before you end your day catching a mesmerising sunset dropping below the horizon. SUSPICIOUS ENCOUNTER with BOATS SAILING OFFSHORE VENEZUELA COAST Thank you for helping keep us afloat and supporting the creative process. You can be part of the crew for less than the price of a coffee. You can do so here: - Patreon https://www.patreon.com/CruisingKiwis - Paymate https://www.kerryhamilltrust.com/donate/ - PayPal using our email thecruisingkiwis@gmail.com This week we set sail on a six day, offshore passage, leaving French Guiana behind and heading north up the South American coast to Grenada in the Caribbean. Our sail takes us past Suriname, Guyana, the coast of Venezuela and the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. A stretch of water presently involved in some intense American military activity. Unfortunately there is no way to avoid the Venezuela coastline, however, to reduce risk we stay well offshore, away from coastal fishing boats and geopolitics. But even far from land, the ocean has ways of throwing curveballs. We witness a strange interaction between a freighter and an unidentified boat. Are they up to no good? We don't know. Is their behaviour suspicious? Absolutely. Daily Life at the Dock on Our Seawind 1600 Catamaran PLUS a GREAT Find | Harbors Unknown Ep. 20 Boat Life. Adventure, travel, excitement. And also regular, everyday routines, especially while we’re still in Ft. Lauderdale at the dock. But in about 2 and a half months that will all change. Each day starts with a walk. We say we’re taking Yoda for a walk but she’s really taking us for a walk because if it weren’t for her we wouldn’t go. Thank you Yoda. A chance to move, be outside and observe the world around us. And time to think; about the upcoming transition, Fabio retiring, us trading the place we’ve called home for so many years for a nomadic life on the sea. All during a pandemic. We thought about waiting but we had already ordered the boat so it was coming. We decided to continue putting one foot in front of the other. Taking the steps to become #fulltimecruisers. Sell the house, leave my job at an advertising agency, learn to make videos, move on the boat, adjust to smaller living quarters and limited resources, start a YouTube channel and brand, learn the intricacies of sailing this boat, because each one has its own nuances, fix the boat, and make plans for our upcoming departure. There has been so much change. But change is good. It forces us to adapt, learn, and grow. Now we’re ready to spread our wings and explore #HarborsUnknown. Those harbors unknown to us. For now, we’re enjoying where we are, exploring our city and connecting with the people here. We love hanging out in #FATVillage. There are always new murals, and restaurants popping up. Today we’re checking out an Italian restaurant, Heritage, a gem owned by Chef Rino Cerbone. We enjoy a delicious meal and chat with the talented chef about his lifelong experience in restaurants, and inspiration for the first concept in his hospitality brand, Cerbone Hospitality. If you like this video give it a thumbs up, subscribe, and share it with a friend. Thanks for watching and we’ll see you next week. If you're new here, Harbors Unknown is the story of two dreamers, Kristin and Fabio Potenti, and our French Bulldog dog Yoda. We sold our home at the beginning of the pandemic (May 27th, 2020) and moved aboard our #Seawind1600 #catamaran, Wanderlust, in September. We plan to sail her to Harbors Unknown, and explore the world’s vast cultures through food, a common thread amongst people everywhere. Connecting with people and places through the local cuisine, and showing how those dishes can be cooked on a boat with limited space and resources. We share the adventures of #boatlife and how it’s possible to live an #alternativelifestyle that provides freedom and fulfillment. Until we officially begin our world voyage, we’re exploring the beautiful waters of #SouthFlorida and the Florida Keys. Subscribe now to join our #sailingadventure. In this video we leave the inside passage of Cape Haftaras and head further south ending up anchored near the famous Georgetown Light house way off on the wild coast of the Eastern Seaboard.
In this episode of Sailing Doodles, we explore the stunning island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas! We hike through ancient caves, brave the massive waves crashing at the Queen’s Bath, and visit the iconic Glass Window Bridge. The adventure heats up when the girls jump into the crystal-clear Sapphire Blue Hole in their bikinis for an epic swim. We wrap up the day with a visit to Preacher’s Cave, where shipwrecked settlers found refuge back in 1647. It’s a mix of thrill, beauty, and history you don’t want to miss! Doch was dann?
