This new video is the completion of us putting our interior salon back together! Some things that made the job extra tricky because of where we are: 1. FORMICA is something we needed to bring to the boat, as it is NOT sold in MEXICO. The Formica for this job was driven to the boat a YEAR earlier in prep for what was to come. We needed to order a router and special bits that could cut the Formica too. Travis has a full workshop in Texas, and my dad (mom) does too...so it was always a thought of "if only we were back in TEXAS"...LOL. The Formica...measure 10x and cut 1x. We felt it, and Travis did a brilliant job! 2. We did not label all pieces of wood trim that needed labeling, which made the putting it all back together all the more laborsome. 3. The furring strips on the starboard side needed redoing entirely, because that side the originals were rotten. Travis and I...learned a new skill we did not know we needed. Who knew! 4. All of those teak pieces of trim needed and indeed cut cut exactly to their new shape (old chainplates were slightly smaller in all directions!). This...took more time too. 5. The material for the ceiling was also brought to the boat a year before...it is foam backed vinyl! A wonderful wonderful material and it was so easy to use and install! (We bought it on Amazon!). WE WILL get this boat of ours launched and under sail soon...we certainly did not know we were buying such a project boat when we did, but one day she will be as perfect as she can be, and we will bask in the glow of an a job well done, and stories to tell! For the past couple of weeks my crew and I have been stuck in the Seychelles due to some immigration complications. What an awful place to be stuck, right? With the extra time on our hands we have been exploring the islands, eating new foods, and making friends with the locals. A few nights ago we met a friendly farmer named Gerry, who gave us a lift to our boat. That’s when we got the brilliant idea to spend a day working on his farm to see what life is like for a farmer in the Seychelles. Gerry was up for it, so a couple of days later, we headed to his farm. ------------------------------------------ SUBSCRIBE to our Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5yQtWj1R--f7TCDpzZ5iXg?sub_confirmation=1 ------------------------------------------ EXCLUSIVE CONTENT!!: https://www.patreon.com/sailingrippleeffect ------------------------------------------ Watch Season 7: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afaTfAmnuMs&list=PLEz8PmTM4lWDK2c2YW8rr55wjvf74934g Watch Season 6: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-1Jkl4rCMY&list=PLEz8PmTM4lWDu_xLN0JFnx-YX5lSgzXq3&index=1&t=57s Watch Season 4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7IrEwJVnHI&list=PLEz8PmTM4lWDG7tstlqR3O1M2fkQQT8-A Watch Season 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nsvIT8jNl8&t=131s Watch Season 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yt7prknxHOA Watch Season 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Z1OuEPXG-w ------------------------------------------ Follow Mara: https://www.instagram.com/mararipple/ Follow Doc: https://www.instagram.com/docgastone/ Follow Gabi: https://www.instagram.com/gabiwaked/ Follow Alex: https://www.instagram.com/alexoropel/ Follow Berra: https://www.instagram.com/_____berra_____/ #seychelles #travel #uniquetravelexperiences
After a tough start to the season that left Ben injured and out of commission for a couple of weeks, we’re finally back—and back to adventure. This episode picks up with a return to the cabin, where local friends Rod and Alvin take us deeper into life in this rugged part of the world. From checking rabbit traps and ice fishing to hearing firsthand stories of growing up on remote islands, it’s a glimpse into a way of life shaped by isolation, resilience, and community. Then it’s back into the mountains. Steve and Carter set out to find a hidden ice climb they’d previously spotted from the highway—but with no trail and limited time, it turns into a full-on route-finding mission from above, rappelling into the unknown and hoping they’ve landed in the right place. Between setbacks, exploration, and a few hard-earned lessons, this week is about getting back on your feet—and back out there. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! Hello Friends, On this episode we head to the boat to test fit the enclosure and make sure all the measurements line up. After getting the stove set down in the brackets and seeing how she swings we head back ashore and get to work on preparing the bulkheads and start the laminating process. After drilling out the holes for the brackets I installed countersunk "T-Nuts" on both of the bulkheads. This will give me the strength of a through bolt without having an exposed nut on the other side of the bulkhead. In the chance that I should ever find myself capsized in the southern ocean I want to make sure the oven stays put until the boat rights itself. Everything I build on my boat I build with the knowledge that one day I will be sailing in the Southern Ocean and I want to make sure every project I do is as strong and secure as possible. I used white formica for the surfaces and DAP Weldwood contact cement to adhere it. With the help of my wife Camille and Mr. Steady the hound we got the enclosure all screwed together and ready for more laminating. Thanks for watching! This episode documents the removal of a leaking forward deck hatch aboard Paikea and the process of filling and structurally rebuilding the opening. The hatch over Harry’s bunk had been a long-term source of water ingress. Rather than replacing it like-for-like, we decided to remove the opening entirely and move ventilation to a side port light positioned under the gunwale, where it’s protected from direct rain and green water. The video covers: Why this hatch was removed rather than replaced Cutting and filling the deck opening Foam fitting in a cambered deck Hand laminating versus infusion trade-offs Laminate thickness, resin choice, and consolidation Why closing the opening significantly stiffens the deck panel This isn’t presented as a universal solution. It’s a record of one specific structural decision on Paikea, made within the constraints of time, access, and how the boat is actually used offshore. CHAPTERS: 00:00 Cutting another hole in the boat – why this hatch matters 01:00 Why the forward hatch keeps leaking 01:02 Decision: filling the hatch instead of replacing it 4:54 Two hatches in – preparing to fill Harry’s hatch 7:14 Shaping foam to match deck camber 09:01 Cold conditions and curing the foam 11:38 Hand laminating vs infusion (and time pressure) 15:27 Can you walk on it yet? Jono Pank and Isobel Bretherton won the GJW Direct Bloody Mary Pursuit Race, the sixth leg of the Seldén Sailjuice Winter Series, held at Queen Mary Sailing Club on Saturday 10th January 2026. Second place went to Angus Cook and Lucie Hopkins, also sailing a Firefly, while third place was taken by Ian Dobson and his son Ted in their Mirror dinghy. Jono Pank became the first sailor to win the Bloody Mary two years in a row, having taken the trophy last year with his son Freddie. This is a remarkable achievement, considering the number of variables and conditions required for such a result. The winning team from Imperial Poona Yacht Club crossed the line ahead of a 124-boat fleet, featuring sailors representing 42 boat classes from 62 sailing clubs. The race was held in a north-easterly Force 2-3, with the sun making a welcome appearance throughout. You can find the full report and results at https://www.yachtsandyachting.com/news/292870/GJW-Direct-50th-Bloody-Mary
Love that — we keep the depth, just add a little wink 😄 🎬 Written Hook The bag I hope I never need. ✍🏼 Caption (funny + real) This is my grab bag. Also known as: “something has gone very wrong.” It’s not about packing everything… it’s about packing what actually matters. First aid (nothing fancy, just enough to not panic). Ways to communicate. Ways to be found. Water, food, something warm… and apparently a toothbrush, because priorities. PLB, EPIRB, radios, tracker… basically all the “please come find me” devices. And then the random things that somehow make sense in this context. A bucket. A leatherman. High calorie snacks like I’m about to run a marathon. Putting this together is a bit surreal. Because you’re preparing for a situation you really don’t want to be in… but also making sure that if it happens, you’re not completely useless. Out here, you don’t rely on luck. You pack a bag… just in case 😅 ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology.
