► Two years ago, we discovered the Makai 37 in Croatia, designed by the Italian naval architects Eryd Yacht Design. The Z-shaped aft structure of the coachroof/bimini is unmistakably the signature of this young brand, which has already announced a second model, the Makai 42. In the meantime, Makai has added a touch of sportiness to its 37 in the GTS version, which is fitted with a central foil - a blade between the hulls connecting one to the other. ► Hull #5 includes this feature, and we got the chance to take it out for a test run in Aigio, Greece. It is powered by a pair of V8 Yanmar engines, each producing 370 HP, coupled to Q-SPD (Q-Marine Surface Piercing Drive) drive units with semi-submerged propellers. This configuration, with the same engine power, delivers a spectacular performance boost, as the top speed increases, according to our measurements, from 30 to 42.6 knots! The same applies to fuel consumption, which decreases by 30 to 50% at the same engine speed (starting at 3,000 rpm). We made a one week long trip through Tunisia with a rental, most of which through the Sahara desert. We have seen a huge colosseum, slept in a cave hostel, went to oases, made a visit to the Tatooine Star Wars filmset in the desert, rode on camels and did some other stuff . We had a great time! HARBOR LOCKDOWN at LAS VELAS. Logic dictated a standard departure for our friends, but the sub-surface reality was a mission-critical threat to the fleet. The Navy ran aground in the harbor before a ship even hit the reef, eventually forcing authorities to string cables across the harbor entrance. On SV Agua Azul, we don't have the luxury of a tow. If the NAVIGATION CHANNEL is obstructed by Navy cables, the logic flow stops. This is the forensic truth of DOMINICAN HARBOR LOGISTICS. . THE REVEAL 🔓 DIY FAILS. To restore the system miles from a chandlery, we spent the weekend troubleshooting local failures. We secured the INVERTER with custom-cut boards so the gear doesn't fall over on passage and executed a forensic fix on a leaking AC unit using DOUBLE HOSE CLAMPS to stop salt water from dripping onto the electronics. This was a sub-surface necessity to keep The Nest operational while the local infrastructure failed. . THE CLIFFHANGER ⏳ 11:36. The situation evolved into a survival risk during the SUPER BOWL. We skipped the WOKE HALFTIME SHOW—refusing to participate in the Bad Bunny narrative—and watched the KID ROCK HALFTIME SHOW on the tablet at the table instead. The night started with everything reefed, ready for the front we thought would hit. But it didn’t. Instead, we were left with barely any wind, sails flopping around, moving slowly and awkwardly through the water. One of those frustrating nights where you’re prepared for something that just doesn’t show up. Then in the morning… it did. The front finally arrived and the wind picked up quickly to around 25–30 knots. The sea built up, the boat started moving a lot more, and suddenly everything felt a bit intense. It was hard to do much. We spent a lot of time just on the floor, because that was the most stable place to be. During the day it eased off a little, which gave us a chance to recover a bit, catch our breath, and reset. But by the evening, it started building again. So we’re heading into another night that probably won’t involve much sleep.
