Some places are hard to leave. The last days we spent in the Bahamas brought daily lightning storms, curious dolphins, and a few final dives before turning Dark Angel toward the Dominican Republic. In this episode of Sailing Dark Angel we’re anchored at Mathew Town, Great Inagua, waiting through daily lightning storms for a weather window to beat to the Dominican Republic. Dolphins keep visiting while we manage to get both engines running long enough to dock at the marina for fuel. Between storms we dive the shoreline and anchorage and finish getting Dark Angel ready for the passage south. The reality of sailing in San Blas is yachts still run aground. Despite heroic efforts she’s not budging yet. This is by the Swimming Pool. A single handed skipper came in in the dark, his engine reverse gear not working, his anchor windlass not working, probably tired, and apparently poor navigation led him on to the reef. We will try to get him off this afternoon. UPDATE Boat was hauled off. Mission accomplished! 2026-03-07

Episode 79: Sailing Turkey to Greece with unexpected changes in plans This episode Cass and Shelly continue their adventures as they check out of Turkey and set sail to Greece. The plan is to sail to Symi to check into Greece with a lovely sail, medium winds of 15 knots and mostly motoring…little did they know the forecast was about to change along with the sea state in a matter of an hour. In the middle of the night a blow came through with big seas and directly beating into it making for a very rough passage on us as well as the boat. So around midnight Cass woke Shelly up and we set a storm sail in our headsail to balance the boat and change course. Rather than continuing to beat into the wind and waves directly towards Symi we came off the wind and veered course towards Rhodes. We decided to use it as a safe harbor and checked into Greece here. Now it’s time to explore a new island and what a beauty it is. Rhodes Acropolis, Seven Springs, Lindos Castle and Lindos Beach are all great destinations and sites to explore. I thought it would be nice to let mother nature do the talking in this one. After almost 3 months in Tasmania, I had the opportunity to visit Maria Island. I caught the ferry across on a Sunday morning and it didn’t take long for us to arrive at this rugged, beautiful island. The next day and a half was spent exploring as much of the island as I could, from the ferry port to the southern most accessible point at Haunted Bay via historical sites and quiet beaches.
