After 4 years of battling with chalky gel-coat on Fair Isle we've bitten the bullet and painted. We had enquired about this a few years back in Lagos but the cost was astronomical. Like most places having the boat sprayed there means taking the mast off and putting the boat in a sealed shed so conditions can be controlled for painting. We knew we had to spray as with the ridges in Fair Isle roll and tipping would have been fiendishly difficult and also wrapping would not be straight forward as the wrap would have to be pushed down into the groves and would even though people have told me this can be done I remain dubious that it won't pull away over time. Fortunately we have had very good reports of the outdoor spraying done in the yard in Portimao. Several friends have had their boats done here with excellent results so we had high hopes of getting a good finish. We did our own prep work to keep costs down even more which was hard work but the guys here are very good at helping and advising so all perfectly doable. Luckily we had a nice break before the onslaught of work as well, a lovely trip down the canals in Belgium. Entering Indonesia by sailboat isn’t as simple as dropping anchor — the check-in process is real, detailed, and something every cruiser talks about… but experiencing it for ourselves was something else entirely. From health checks and paperwork, to welcoming (and very thorough) officials stepping aboard Stella, this was our official introduction to Indonesia — and it’s safe to say, it left an impression. But once we cleared in… everything changed. We found ourselves exploring the island of Sabang by motorbike, weaving through jungle roads, quiet beaches, and getting our first taste of life here. This is the kind of place that feels untouched — raw, beautiful, and full of adventure. Back on the boat, it was time to settle into this new chapter. We jumped in the water, went for a dive, searched for fish (no luck this time 😅), and started preparing for what we came here for… Surf. This is something we’ve dreamed about for a long time — sailing through Indonesia, chasing waves, and exploring some of the most remote islands in the world. And this is just the beginning. This project is to build a budget wooden motor boat in the Mexican jungle. We are back after many things! Making the web stations and more. The making of all marine plywood takes a lot of time! This wooden motor boat is called Wooden Shoe. This is a unique project as we only using disponible wood from fallen trees. The original plans are for a 23 feet boat, but we have changed it to 25 feet and some extra cabin height. We make all frames and plywood. Hi Guys, In this weeks vlog, I am preparing to leave my boat again. I am showing the realities of boat like vs. living in a house to show that everything takes a lot longer and more planning is required as you can't just up and leave! I hope you enjoy the vlog! Kayleigh I'm Kayleigh and along with my two dogs Hugo and Coco we will full time on board our 37ft narrowboat Grayswood. After living nearly two years in our self-converted campervan we decided we needed more space. So we decided to purchase a boat after spending some time on our friend’s narrowboat. Grayswood was conveniently located less that 5 minutes from my work and was found kind of by accident. I was visiting a friend who was staying in Aston Marina and whilst we were out walking the dogs, I seen the advert for Grayswood. I said to my friend “that looks a nice boat” and as I said it the marina manager appeared and asked if we would like a look inside. Naturally we did. After looking inside the boat, we made an offer after going back for a second viewing, after some negotiations within a week she was ours pending a survey. She was hauled out the following week and the survey went well. We kept her out on the hard standing for a further six weeks whilst we renovated the insides including fitting a new kitchen and bathroom.
