This week, we tackle the massive job of finally fully welding the roof and adding much-needed reinforcement. Watch as we cut, fit, and weld all the new aluminum stringers (reusing leftover materials to save costs!), making the deck-saloon roof solid and strong enough for whatever we need to do on top! We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life. We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. The traditional Invitation Race got the JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff World Championship 2026, presented by The Winning Group, under way in a 8-10 knot SE breeze on Sydney Harbour today and produced an absorbing contest which wasn’t decided until the final one hundred metres of the long South-East course. At the finish, it was the Australian champion Balmain team of Henry Larkings, Tom Grimes and Lachlan Pryor who won the day narrowly from a ‘gutsy’ Smeg team of Ash Rooklyn, Josh Porebski and Niall Morrow, which had led for almost the entire race. Defending champion Yandoo (John Winning Jr, Fang Warren and Lewis Brake) finished in third place, ahead of Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Keagan York), Vaikobi (Kirk Mitchell) and Brisbane’s GC Sails (Scott Cunningham). The battle between Balmain and Smeg was a brilliant way to start the carnival as the pair raced the entire course in the top two positions with the margin between them at just two rounding marks extending beyond 20 secs. A majority of the fleet went to the RHS of Shark Island on the beat from the start in Taylors Bay to the weather mark in Rose Bay where Balmain led narrowly from Smeg, Queensland’s Big Foot Bags & Covers (Dave Hayter), Shaw and Partners Financial Services NZ (Eli Liefting), Shaw and Partners (Aust), Yandoo, Lazarus Capital Partners (Tom Cunich), Club Marine (Emma Rankin), Vaikobi and GC Sails. In a spectacular spinnaker run across the harbour to Robertson Point the two leaders extended their break over the rest of the fleet as Smeg rounded the mark just 8s ahead of Balmain. Shaw and Partners (Aust) was 50s back in third place ahead of Yandoo and Shaw and Partners (NZ). GC Sails was next with Vaikobi, Sixt (Jacob Marks) and Fisher & Paykel (Brett Van Munster) close behind. A match race developed between the two leaders on the beat to Clark Island where Smeg led by 20s as spinnakers were set for the spinnaker run to Chowder Bay. Balmain was 55s ahead of Shaw and Partners (Aust) with Yandoo 1m35s from the lead in fourth place. The margins between the first three boats was unchanged at Chowder but it was the beat across to Rose Bay where Smeg’s crew produced some brilliant sailing to increase the leading margin to 40s. On the following spinnaker run to Taylors Bay, Balmain and Yandoo both gained significant time on the leader and the race was back on with only 8s separating Smeg and Balmain as they headed back across the harbour to Rose Bay. Balmain took advantage of a slightly slower mark rounding by Smeg and crossed to grab a narrow lead but Smeg returned the favour on the next cross and took it back. Smeg then extendd the margin and once again Smeg’s lead got back out to 32. Balmain's downwind boat speed has been outstanding all season, particularly in lighter winds, and she reduced the margin back to just 3-4 boat lengths at Robertson Point as the pair headed for home near Clark Island. Smeg went to the right and Balmain to the left; when they came together near Clark Island Balmain had regained the lead once more and crossed the finish line with the narrow winning margin and plenty of confidence for the championship regatta, which begins tomorrow. The championship is expected to be one of the most closely contested JJs for several years. If today’s racing is any indication, we are in for a tremendous series which may come down to an overall decision as close as today’s race. On December 12th, 1978, the German cargo ship MS München disappeared while sailing through a storm on the North Atlantic. A series of radio messages and a small handful of clues suggest that the modern cargo ship probably sank after colliding with a massive rogue wave. Discover the fascinating story of the mysterious unsinkable ghost ship! Get ready to embark on a journey full of intrigue and suspense as you uncover the incredible tale of the Governor Parr schooner! Imagine a majestic wooden sailboat built in Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1918, with an imposing length of 200 feet. In September 1923, the Governor Parr was on its final voyage to Buenos Aires, Argentina, when a fierce storm hit her. The relentless power of the waves wreaked havoc on the ship, toppling its majestic mizzen mast and claiming the lives of the captain and one of the sailors. Convinced that the ship would sink, the crew abandoned it during the storm, unaware that this would only be the first twist in this incredible story. #ghostship #sailing #ship

Escaping Storms at Empire State-Sized Calpe Rock – Sailing Denia to Alicante - Sailing Helios S03E46
In this Sailing Helios episode, we cast off from Denia as thunderstorms rumble along the coast – not ideal sailing weather! We push on and find excellent shelter from the forecast strong winds tucked beside the dramatic Penyal d'Ifac (Peñón de Ifach), the iconic limestone rock in Calpe that towers 332 meters (over 1,000 feet) – as tall as the Empire State Building and dominating the Costa Blanca skyline. After waiting out the bad weather for a day (and enjoying the stunning views), we set sail south toward Alicante with the wind, waves, and current all pushing us along – finally some proper sailing! It's exhilarating to harness the breeze after the calm, but we're excited to arrive in Alicante for a few days of exploring the city and its sights. Stay tuned for the next episode, where we dive into Alicante adventures! Last year I was an organic grain farmer in Alberta. In July 2023, the opportunity came for me to leave that life and follow my long-time dream of living and travelling on a sailboat. This year, I am learning to sail and am living aboard this 1981 Newport 28. From the backcountry of Northern Canada to the vast expanse of the ocean aboard my 28' sailboat, my life has been a series of unorthodox experiences. Whether guiding fishing expeditions in Canada's far north or cultivating a thriving farm business, I've always tried to live life on my own terms. Join us on this new series where every week I will take a few minutes to divulge the ideas and mindset that have empowered me to chase these dreams. My goal with these short, power-packed videos is to inspire you, or to otherwise help you to craft the life you've always desired. Subscribe now and unlock the keys to a life of boundless adventure!
