It may look like an America’s Cup boat, but this is the first of what could be the next generation of inshore/offshore foiling machines. Designed for racing in offshore and coastal races in the Mediterranean ‘Flying Nikka’ is no pipe dream – she’s already in build for a private owner and due to be launched Spring 2022. We talk to her designer Mark Mills. Plus, how many is too many aboard an IMOCA60? Having raced fully crewed aboard Offshore Team Germany and won the IMOCA60 class in The Ocean Race Europe, Olympic and round the world sailor Annie Lush explains. We take a look at the Round the Island Race as well as looking back at what happened in the third and final offshore leg of The Ocean Race Europe. Plus, the link between superyachts and McDonalds and plenty more in Docktalk. 01:00 Foiling future – ‘Flying Nikka’ 13:27 Docktalk Part 1 16:33 Fully crewed on an IMOCA60 22:53 Docktalk Part 2 26:02 The Ocean Race Europe – Leg 3 29:52 Round The Island Race Facebook - @planetsail.org Website - www.planetsail.org Twitter - matthewsheahan Linkedin - www.linkedin.com/in/matthew-sheahan

Motoring a sailboat down the Mississippi River — a bit paradoxical, isn’t it? Back when buying a sailboat was still a distant dream, we can most definitely assert that motoring down a bunch of rivers was not on the to do list. But, sometimes you find yourself in strange situations. And it’s been one helluva journey! This episode spans the 218 miles of Mississppi River which makes up part of the inland waterway connecting Lake Michigan to the Gulf of Mexico. We were apprehensive of the Mighty Miss. How would our boat handle in the swift 4-5 knot current? What would navigating around all the commercial traffic be like? Would there be safe places to anchor? Oddly enough, the Mississippi turned out to be one of our favorite parts of this journey. Fall was in full swing and the trees were a kaleidoscope of colors. Passing barges became more interesting and less nerve-wracking. A fog bank kept us on our toes. We found a couple of lovely anchorages, and watched one ahh-mazing sunset. More music by Common Jack in this episode! Hope you enjoy, Lauren & Kirk P.S. Well... we broke a plank. No worries though. We got it fixed and back on the boat. That's how we roll here... with the punches and not against them. We got a lesson in how far you can push a plank to bend and from now on will know what we can and can't do in that instance. The are a of the stern where we are now planking has a lot more twist than in most other sections, and although we managed to get the plank in place, we then started hearing some crackling noises. So, Steve worked on replacing and re-scarfing that end of the plank so we could work on getting it back on the boat with only a minimal setback. We are then going to be steaming in the places which require an inordinate amount of twist. So there is that to look forward to in the coming episodes! Remember folks! Molehills, not mountains! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. The water is so close now we can smell it. After trailering Soulianis out of our landlocked boatyard, she’s now poised and ready for launch — right after we finish painting the centerboard with bottom paint. The launch goes well at first. No leaks, and the motor runs. One problem: forward gear doesn’t have much oomph, and reverse doesn’t work at all. So, about that feathering prop we rebuilt… we’ve got some troubleshooting to do. Welcome back! This episode Steve gets the sheer clamp bolted together and fastened to the steam bent frames of Arabella. The clamp is the first piece of deck framing and the beginning of the visible timbers inside Arabella. Joe gives us a hand and we get the big planer rig finished and running strong. Thad also pays a visit and we get the keel timber for his new build brought down to size for him. It's a busy time around here! Next week we will dive into Arabella's breast hooks then it will be onto the beam shelf. Thanks for watching! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. The last of this season of The Old Seadog videos. Hope you enjoy this episode, lots of fun stuff and back at sea again! Now Im at sea crossing the Pacific filming a new 'Bigger adventure due for release early 2019. Make sure you have your notifications for this channel turned on so you don't miss the start! The Old Seadog will return! #sailing #stormatsea #sailingaroundtheworld Thank you for watching this episode, please give us a thumbs up and subscribe. Facebook https://www.facebook.com/adventuresof... Patreon https://www.patreon.com/adventuresofa... Instagram https://www.instagram.com/adventureso... Twitter https://twitter.com/barryperrins Thanks so much for your support, The adventure continues. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over 3 days. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! Bob and Steve finish fitting the black locust beam shelf into Arabella. This involves some pattern making and a whole slew of hooked scarfs to be cut. While Bob does the final few fits on the shelf, Steve launches into finding the strong (king) deck beam locations. Right before Bob heads back to his shop he and Steve select some likely deck beam timbers and Steve gets to work cutting them out. It's sure been a lot of fun working on the deck structure and the good times have just begun! If you have not watched any of Bob's videos check them out here! https://www.youtube.com/user/bobemser Thanks for following and supporting our endeavor. We could not produce these weekly videos without your help! Thank you! Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

To see the Feadship YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/feadshipholland To watch Rose Damen discuss business at Amels with her Father: https://www.amels-holland.com/about-amels/amels-heritage/ I've always considered Holland to be a remarkable country, full of yacht builders of exceptional quality. When I started researching some of the builders for this vlog I realised that there are actually even more interesting yacht builders than I had first thought, so I decided to create a series of three videos, in lieu of my visit to the country later this week. Here is the first one!
