This is the Hallberg-Rassy Rally where everyone is a winner. As the tradition says with this popular rally, there is no timekeeping and no racing – only winners. Every boat that sails will win some kind of category. One is crazier than the next: Happiest Crew, Oldest Boat, Youngest Crew Member – and more. You may use or not use a gennaker, code zero, spinnaker – or even the engine if you think that is useful. Prizes are generous. Previous years have included SUP boards, inverters, life vests, LED lights, tool kits, jackets, bags and much more. The event begins with an open house at Hallberg-Rassy Parts, including food, drinks, and special offers on clothing and gear. Visitors also get a behind-the-scenes look at the production halls, where new yachts are under construction. All participating crews receive a rally T-shirt, and the evenings are spent together with shared dinners – from Swedish west coast buffets to classic pepper steak – served in the iconic travellift garage. This morning, anyone checking the race tracker might have been surprised to see the positions completely upside down. Due to a lack of wind combined with strong currents, the racing IMOCA teams were tacking, turning, and doing everything possible to inch their way toward Portsmouth. These challenging conditions are not just physically demanding, they’re mentally exhausting for the crews as well. By late afternoon, our crew were still holding 3rd place, just a few miles behind Arkéa Paprec, with less than 100 nautical miles to go before the finish line. This week we look at having a very effective and high volume water extraction tool on your boat. You can pick one up for an inexpensive amount of money and they move a lot of water fairly quick (about 17 gallons per minute). It may exhaust you, but it will move the water in an emergency. There is that old saying, there is no better bilge pump than a scared sailor with a bucket. Not true, this is pretty darn effective as well and portable when needed. Links to buy new pumps here, but you can also find them at local swap meets near local boating hot beds. Just pop into a large marina and ask if they do boater swap meets. Chances are there are a couple per year in your area. Think of it like a large garage sale of just boat stuff.
