Is the Phantom 65 the most practical (and fun) boat in it's class? James takes his first look at the Fairline Phantom 65 at it's show debut at the 2023 Düsseldorf Boat Show and is blown away.. In this first full tour James looks at the key features of this boat, its speed and the amazing level of detail in the finish of every element of the boat. Full details can be seen here: https://fairline.com/yachts/phantom/65/ If you are interested in one of these boats, please get in touch as there will be limited availability for the new couple of years. A few days after filming the Phantom 65 won the prestigious Motor Boat of the Year award at the Motor Boat & Yachting Awards held at Düsseldorf. Here is what they had to say: This may be Fairline’s first attempt at a sportsfly design but you’d never guess it from the way it looks, performs and feels. With those sleek, flowing lines, it strikes the perfect balance between elegance and sportiness, yet somehow still manages to pack in up to four cabins below deck and masses of sociable living space inside and out. Even the flybridge itself, while compact by Squadron standards, has plenty of secure seating, sunpads and a proper wet bar, as well as a comprehensive outside helm station. However, all of this would count for little if the driving experience failed to live up to Fairline’s usual high standards. Thankfully, it’s even better than we had anticipated, delivering effortless acceleration up to a top speed of 38 knots, responsive handling and the kind of refined, long-legged cruising that feels perfectly in keeping with that other legendary Phantom built by Rolls-Royce motor cars. Last but by no means least, those impressive dynamic characteristics are backed up by sound practical thinking, a beautifully finished interior and reassuringly solid build quality. As we said in our original test, the Phantom 65 really does feel like it offers the best of both worlds with the looks and driving characteristics of a traditional sportscruiser but also the comfort and practicality of a flybridge. This week in Newfoundland, Steve and Carter finish their Baker’s Brook Pond recon with one more attempt to cross the ice and reach the big climbing terrain they came to scout. After backing off the previous day due to warming temperatures, they return with colder conditions, a better plan, and a clear strategy for managing the risks of crossing a frozen pond in the backcountry. They test ice thickness, spread out their weight on skis, rig ropes and backup systems, and work through the real decision-making that goes into moving safely across uncertain terrain. After exploring the far side of the fjord and confirming what’s worth coming back for, they return to Arabella to find a few new winter problems waiting at the dock. Back aboard the boat, Steve tracks down an electrical short that knocked out the bubbler, then tackles another liveaboard winter issue: Akiva’s dog hair clogging the electric heaters. From frozen ponds and backcountry route finding to troubleshooting life aboard in a Newfoundland winter, this episode is all about solving problems as they come. -------------------------- Episode #380 Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! The Pacific Mail Steamship Company's SS City of Rio de Janeiro, launched March 6, 1878, was an aging but popular liner on the Pacific, connecting San Francisco with Hawaii, Japan, and Hong Kong. On a routine voyage, she got stuck in a fog bank at Golden Gate, right at the mouth of her home port in San Francisco Bay. On February 22, 1901, she crashed into the rocks at Fort Point and sank within minutes, leaving behind the deadliest disaster in San Francisco history before the Great Earthquake of 1906. We depart Kuala Terengganu with an unforgettable farewell, passing back through the drawbridge as crowds line the roadway and local boats escort us out. It’s a heartfelt send-off that perfectly captures the warmth of this incredible city. Heading south, the wind finally arrives — but straight on the nose — turning the sail into a slow and uncomfortable slog. As conditions build, we spot a small sheltered river protected by a brand-new breakwater and decide to slip inside. It proves to be a hidden gem: a perfectly calm, secure anchorage that gives us one of our best night’s sleep in days. At first light, we set off toward Tarempa in the Anambas Islands on an overnight passage. After a long night at sea, dawn brings us into a bustling shipping lane, where we carefully weave between tankers and freighters before making our final approach. Once checked into Indonesia, we’re invited to join the lively E-Festival — parading through town with the locals before a welcome dinner that’s suddenly interrupted by a classic tropical downpour! We finish with a full day exploring Siantan Island, visiting the Grand Mosque, the charming Dusun stilt village, the towering Temburun Waterfall, and the tiny town of Arung. Another episode filled with adventure, warm hospitality, and the vibrant culture of Indonesia’s remote islands. 🌴⚓ Timestamps if you like to Jump Right In: 00:00 Intro 00:32 Leaving Kuala Terengganu 05:20 Sheltering in Kuala Paka 07:48 2nd Reef Jamb 08:27 Heading off to the Anambas Islands 12:45 Clearing in to Terempa 14:07 Guests at the E festival 16:40 Island Tour WHO ARE WE? Hey there! We’re Chris and Jo, an ordinary Aussie couple living our extraordinary dream aboard our Seawind 1260 since January 2019 and now we continue from 2024 aboard our new 1370! Our adventure began with an unforgettable journey down the east coast of Australia, followed by a sail to the stunning New Caledonia. In 2020, we continued our exploration further north, and by 2021 and 2022, we circumnavigated Australia, discovering breathtaking locations along the way. Having previously owned fishing and water-skiing boats, our passion for sailing deepened after crewing in South Australia, leading us to make the leap into full-time living at sea. We hope to inspire you, just as we were inspired by other YouTube channels, to chase your dreams and explore the wonders of this beautiful world. Our plan to sail from California to Spain: four passages, one dream, and a huge adventure ahead. In this video, we share our full passage plan to relaunch Jupiter² and sail from Mexico all the way across the North Atlantic to Spain within a year. It’s a massive journey broken into four legs—each with its own challenges. 🌊 Mexico to Panama – 2,500 miles of downwind sailing 🚢 Panama Canal Transit – a bucket-list milestone 🌬️ Panama to Florida – fighting trade winds, avoiding pirate zones, watching hurricanes ⛵ Florida to Chesapeake – staging for the big one 🌍 North Atlantic Crossing – 3,500 miles via the Azores or direct to Spain I talk through weather windows, limited time off work, crew selection (including our longtime patrons!), boat weight concerns, sleep shifts, safety, and the reality of preparing for a month-long ocean crossing. And of course… what do we do with Oakley? Fly him? Sail him? That alone might decide everything. This is the beginning of our biggest adventure yet—four passages leading to our North Atlantic crossing and a new chapter of Life on Jupiter in the Mediterranean.
