If you are a solo sailor, a racer, a cruiser or even a dinghy sailor... you should know who Sir Francis Chichester is. Basically, he is the guy that proved to the world in the 60's that you could sail solo around the world without stops. He did stop, just once and only because he wanted to, but very soon afterwards the Sunday Times in the UK created the Golden Globe; the first ever Solo, Non-stop Around the World yacht race in 1968 and the rest is history. BUT, this was not the first of Francis Chichester's adventures, nor his last and in this book, The Romantic Challenge, we discover Francis just a few years on from his successful circumnavigation, looking for something else in sailing that will whet his whistle in the same way the circumnav did. What he choose to do was to challenge the concept of sailing 200Nm per a day, a big feat for even modern computer-designed cruiser. At the time in the early 70's it was a far away goal to most sailors except those who remembered the Clipper ships . As was his style, he chose to add greatly to the difficulty of the undertaking, by laying forth a goal of completing this high daily mileage on not one or two days, but for five! He drew a 4000Nm line across the Atlantic and challenged himself to complete 1000Nm in five consecutive days. Meaning every single one of them would be required to be over 200NM. It was a quantum leap in the psychology of performance around sailing and we are lucky that Sir Francis's style of writing allows the reader to get under the skin of the endeavor and really see inside the mind of a master mariner at work as he wrestles with the task. “Jabulo” is a 2002 Dean 440 catamaran, built by Dean Catamarans in Capetown, South Africa. She has been our full time live-aboard cruising home in French Polynesia for the past 3 years, however health concerns now mean we must change our lifestyle. In the pursuit of extreme seaworthiness, all Dean Catamarans feature very buoyant full bows with the bridge deck carried well forward and small trampoline area. They feature asymmetrical hulls, where the outside curvature is much greater than the inner hull curvature, resulting in a reduced wave forming action between the hulls (reduced venturi effect). This, coupled with a high bridge deck clearance dramatically reduces under bridge deck slamming, while also improving overall performance. Another feature of Dean Catamaran’s are the mast which is raked aft by 7 degrees. This unusual feature assists both the yachts upwind performance, and its ability to tack through the wind without the difficulties associated with some other catamarans. We have loved “Jabulo” for many things. Firstly the Dean 440 sets a perfect mix of space, comfort and performance. We will sail rings around a ‘condo-cat’, yet still be comfortable and controllable enough to enjoy doing it. Secondly, the boat is galley-down which gives so much more comfort and usable space than the charter oriented galley-up The boat has been imported into French Polynesia and so can remain here forever, for short holiday stays or long term cruising in the best cruising area in the world. Alternatively kick off your trip of a lifetime from here – the boat is fully fitted out and ready to go (just bring your toothbrushes). https://www.catamaransite.com/catamarans-for-sale/dean-440-4/
We are starting to get a lot of people wanting us to compare the Caribbean with the Mediterranean. Well it's too early for us to give a fair comparison at the moment and it's quite a complex question which will need a dedicated video. One thing's for sure though, the Caribbean has a wonderful reliable sailing breeze. I don't think we've had a day since we've been here that it hasn't blown 15-25 knots from the East. There's certainly some sporty sailing to be had and when it's this warm who cares about getting some sea spray in your hair? In this episode we sail from Grenada to St Lucia with some wonderful stops in Bequia, Carriacou and Union Island and as ever there are multiple boat jobs to do. Dyneema loops: I started testing these loops last year after watching some videos from HowNot2 ( this is a good one... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhIPeJNWtxE ) and them saying the Brummel lock adds nothing to the strength. It's a site aimed at climbers but there's some good info for us yachties. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE DO SUBSCRIBE - IT COSTS YOU NOTHING AND HELPS US OUT WITH THE YOUTUBE ALGORITHM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PATREON: We couldn't make these videos without the support of you, our patrons.
