There are moments at sea when one decision can change everything. After an overnight passage from Moorea, we had just one chance to enter the spectacular Rangiroa Ato Lou ll safely. Miss the afternoon slack tide, and we’d be forced to spend another 18 hours outside the reef in rough Pacific seas, waiting for the next safe opportunity. With the wind turning against us, confused seas slowing LouLou, and every lost knot bringing us closer to missing the tide, we had to make a difficult decision—keep sailing as planned, or start both engines and put safety ahead of pride. As we raced the clock toward one of French Polynesia’s most powerful passes, every mile mattered. Standing waves, strong tidal currents, and a narrow weather window meant there was no room for mistakes. Join us as we navigate one of the most beautiful—and most demanding—atolls in the South Pacific, and discover why good seamanship isn’t about proving how tough you are… it’s about making the right decision when it matters most. 🌴 In this episode: • Overnight passage from Moorea to Rangiroa • Racing the tide to make slack water • Heavy seas and challenging upwind conditions • Why we chose to motor instead of sail • Entering the famous Rangiroa Pass • Finding a safe anchorage before sunset • The relief of finally arriving after a long passage If you enjoy real cruising adventures, honest decision-making, and exploring some of the world’s most incredible destinations, we’d love to have you aboard. ⚓ Subscribe and join us next week as we explore Rangiroa’s crystal-clear lagoons, incredible coral gardens, and one of the best diving destinations on Earth. :::

IN THIS VIDEO: We sail to Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, making a game out of our lazy sailing—can we hoist the mainsail without it snagging in the lazy jacks? But our fun quickly turns into panic when we realize we’ve made a critical anchoring mistake—we’re too close to the channel. Suddenly, a massive cruise ship is bearing down on GoTFO⛵, narrowly missing us! That heart-pounding moment teaches us a valuable lesson, and we quickly relocate to a mooring ball across the bay. With the boat now safely secured, Dennis tackles the annual winch service, and we believe we’re the first to document how to service Lewmar size 46 and 50 winches. As he works, Dennis casually mentions a long shaft, and Ann—never one to let an opportunity slip—fires back with an innuendo, setting off a chain reaction of playful jokes. Once the winch is reassembled, something doesn’t sound quite right, so Dennis dives into troubleshooting while Ann gets creative. She repurposes our dinghy pole into a dive flag, swapping out the broken all-around white dinghy light for the Alpha flag—the international symbol for divers in the water. Naturally, the dinghy pole also becomes prime material for more jokes. We then set sail for Marie-Galante, Guadeloupe, flying across the water at nearly 9 knots—almost half the wind speed. After anchoring, we take Schatzi for a stroll through town, soaking in the French charm, complete with a cordonnerie (shoemaker) and picturesque streets. The ferry shuttles back and forth, but at one point, we witness something we’ve never seen before—it actually picks up a ginormous mooring ball! Meanwhile, several wing foilers carve effortlessly across the waves, fueling our dreams of learning the sport in the future. Supplies to service your Harken winches: -High-performance winch Oil by Lewmar -Harken Winch Grease -Isopropyl Alcohol, Mineral Spirits, Diesel or Gasoline -Toothbrush or similar brush to apply winch grease -Allen Key metric set -Flat head screw driver CURRENT LOCATION: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/SV-GTFO/ ABOUT OUR CATAMARAN: We love our new Balance 482 - it's a perfect size for a cruising couple to handle and is a great "balance" of performance and comfort. One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, sold everything that we owned, and shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa. We then flew there and explored South Africa by way of a safari and touring Cape Town before moving aboard our boat. We then sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha (Brazil), Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French side), the US Virgin Islands (Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas), the British Virgin Islands (Anegada, Norman Island, Jost van Dyke, and Anegada), The Bahamas (Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera). We then sailed back to the United States, making landfall in Cape Canaveral, Florida. From there our destinations are endless! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) wrote Test Automation in Python and Java. Dennis and Ann met on Match.com where Ann had in her profile "Do you want to sail the world with me?" Ann easily brought Dennis into sailing, and he loved the GTFOplan of retiring early and sailing the world. After many years of saving, living on one income but earning two, and cutting back on everything possible, they saved enough to buy a Balance 482. Follow them as they get real about boat life and all the hassles of buying a new boat because we all know N.E.W. means Not Everything Works. After a scary offshore sail with a ripped mainsail and engine failure, we're finally back at it—repairing the sail, fixing the engine coupling, and provisioning for our Bahamas crossing. From late-night edits to stuffing the boat with $1,600 worth of food and gear, it’s a race against the upcoming weather window. We're so relieved the drive leg is still working, and with help from a new friend, we patch things up and prepare to leave the U.S. behind. #sailing #sailboatrepair #liveaboardlife #sailingtothebahamas #provisioning #tornmainsail #sailingdisasterrecovery #sailingcouple #offshoresailing #boatprojects #proutsnowgoose #enginecouplingrepair #youngsailors #DIYboatrepairs Become a Patron! https://www.patreon.com/patrickandmichaela Check Out Our Merch Store! https://shop.patrickandmichaela.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Follow us on Social Media Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@sailing_thalia Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailing_thalia/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/patrickandmichaela/ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Business Inquiries please reach out to business@patrickandmichaela.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Audio Credits Epidemic Sound: https://www.epidemicsound.com Song: Duality Artist: Cobby Costa Song: Cardboard Box (Instrumental Version) Song: Cardboard Box Song: Before It Begins (Instrumental Version) Song: White Sheets (Instrumental Version) Song: White Sheets Artist: Hennie Hun Song: June 21 Artist: Victor Lundberg Song: Sons And Daughters (Instrumental Version) Song: Sons And Daughters Artist: Nickolas Jones ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Timestamps 00:00 - Intro 01:23 - Taking Down The Mainsail 02:51 - Provisioning The Boat 04:37 - How We’re Recovering 05:43 - How We Stock Up The Boat 07:12 - Provision Results 07:45 - Sewing Our Torn Mainsail 12:39 - Anxiety About Sailing Again 16:47 - Catching Up 17:59 - Outro
#boatfoolssailing #williamtripp #sailing #sailboatforsale #barnfind Only 15 Made — We Found One for $39K | LeComte Northeast 38 MKII TOUR Ahoy BoatFools Nation! Every once in a while, a boat shows up that stops us in our tracks. This is one of those boats. Canadian Ken and I were tipped off to what can only be described as a true barn find — a 1966 LeComte Northeast 38 MKII, owned by the same family for more than 20 years and now quietly coming to market. And here’s the kicker… Only 15 of these Mark II models were ever built. Designed by legendary naval architect William H. Tripp Jr. and built in Holland by LeComte Yachts, the Northeast 38 represents a golden era of yacht design — where performance, craftsmanship, and beauty were expected to coexist. The perfect boat for the nostalgic mariner... CHAPTERS: 00:00 Opener 00:23 Intro to this STUNNER! 02:12 Keel, Rudder & Topsides 06:17 HUGE Cockpit 09:47 Up to the Bow 14:00 Below Deck 16:11 Galley & Nav Station 18:25 The Head 19:10 V-Berth 21:11 The Diesel! 24:03 Final Thoughts And this one? She absolutely delivers. What Makes This Boat Special: Timeless lines that turn heads in any harbor Solid fiberglass hull + Airex-cored decks (no soft, wet wood-cored decks!) Sea-kindly motion and proven offshore pedigree Classic teak interior with that unmistakable warmth With an LOA of 38’3” and a narrow, elegant beam, this is a boat that feels every bit like a proper offshore thoroughbred. The Market Reality: Comparable Northeast 38s have recently listed between $42K–$49K. This one? $39,000. And when you factor in condition, pedigree, and sheer rarity… it starts to feel like something more than just a listing. TO CONTACT THE SELLER FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE EMAIL: joel.rackliffe@gmail.com ⚠️ The Pattern We Keep Seeing After touring more than 100 sailboats, we’ve noticed something: Some boats don’t sit. They get chosen. And boats like this — honest, well-kept, and quietly exceptional — tend to disappear fast. So the question is: Is this one of those boats? If you’re into classic sailboats, bluewater designs, or just appreciate a boat that was built when things were done right… this is one you don’t want to miss. ⚓ Let us know in the comments: Would you take this over a modern production boat? See you next time! -BoatFools Sailing Team Real boats, real people, real fun! Sailboats for the Rest of Us! ». After refuelling and filling up with water in Soller, we discover there’s no space to anchor. Time to keep sailing along Mallorca’s dramatic, rugged coastline in search of the perfect overnight spot. We end up in the beautiful and well-protected Port de Pollenca – an absolute gem of an anchorage! This turns out to be the ideal place to finally install and test our new Momentum Marine electric outboard on the EZRaft dinghy "Bobby" for the very first time. Jude takes charge of rigging it up, and we’re both blown away by how different (and enjoyable!) the electric experience is compared to our old petrol outboard. Quiet, smooth, responsive – it’s a total game-changer for dinghy life aboard Helios. Watch as we explore this stunning part of Mallorca under sail and put the new electric propulsion through its paces. Episode S04E14 Recorded: Viewer-first. Ad-free. Supported by those who choose to. They say you should never sail on a schedule, but juggling off-grid sailing and a YouTube channel means that we have to be extra regimented to make sure we’re able to maintain our weekly videos. This week we leave one of our favorite anchorages yet to return to an anchorage that we know has strong enough internet to upload an episode. We go over our editing schedule and some of our computer and camera gear, and show you what our computer week routine looks like while out in the middle of nowhere.
