Richmond Yacht Club hosted the Laser mid-Winter West regatta in warm but not too breezy conditions. Many of them were excited about being somewhere where snow was not still on the ground. Competitors from all over the United States and Canada showed up to race in Laser Radials and full rigs. With seven races over the three days, there was plenty of opportunity to make mistakes and drop out of contention. Sean Kelly and Kevin Taugher fought it in the full rig division all three days but the 5 point advantage after the first day held up as Sean got to discard his one bad score. Making an encore appearance in the class was John Bertrand who won a Laser World Championship before most of the competitors were even born. He came in 4th out of 54 boats. Local knowledge also seemed to play a big part with 5 of the top 8 boats from the Bay Area. The racing was much tighter in the Radial division where Kieran Chung didnt squeeze out his one point win over Mitchell Kiss until the very last race. Three other racers didnt end up with any double digit finishes after the throw out.

The dynamics of these cat boat are truly amazing. Generally at low speeds in a Catamaran the boat is going to lean outboard, but at low speeds you are NOT likely to throw anyone out. At high rates of speeds a cat will lean inboard like a mono-hull.

Just like in a mono-hull if you trim the bow down this causes more resistance on the bow and can cause it to be more difficult to steer in a following sea. But if you trim the bow up, the boat will go up and over the following sea and it will drive beautifully. The following video disproves this myth.

The purpose of a catamaran is to handle the heavy seas; which is what they were designed to do. They were developed in South Africa to handle the heavy seas. Cats can be used when the bigger 50'-60' boaters go out on the heavy seas and can run as fast if not faster. The mono-hulls cannot compete with this in the bigger seas.

At slow speeds with a head sea due to fluid dynamics if tunnel (space between the hulls) is blocked by a wave, then hit by another wave then there could be a slight mist. However, the World Cat has a hydropod between the two hulls that breaks up the pressure that usually resolves this issue.

Catamarans are the best boats in a head sea. The analogy would be would you prefer to push your way through the water with palm first, or the side of both hands; which do you think would cause you less resistance? There is no other boat Dean would prefer to be in with a head sea.

Because of the tunnel between the two hulls this makes it more aerodynamic with less resistance, which means better fuel economy when towing.

Cat boats are designed to flex and have not heard of one breaking.

Here's a clip of me busting some moves with fishermen from Yemen. It was part of the celebrations that were held in our honour when we sailed through Aden with the Vasco Da Gama rally. I am the first Englishman to dance with Yemeni fishermen. Actually I think the accolade I was awarded by the coastguard who gave me this video clip was that I was the first foreigner to lead a troupe of Yemeni fishermen. Goed getimed. Vallen er net een paar afspraken uit als het prachtig lenteweer wordt. Anderhalf uur vliegen naar Koblenz-Winningen (EDRK) waar het vliegveld erg mooi boven op de heuvel ligt. Tegen de heuvel barst het van de wijnranken en in een kwartiertje daal je af tot het dorpje WInningen. Van daaaruit weer een kwartiertje met de trein naar Koblenz voordat we bij Nora Emmerich in het hotel vlakbij het vliegveld gaan slapen. De volgende dag hebben we 40 knopen wind in de rug waardoor je in een uurtje terug naar Lelystad vliegt.
