Josh and I spent the holidays in the UK this year, in the seaside town of Exmouth, Devon where my parents live. We’re only back once in every three years for Christmas, and I relish the Christmas Swim each time. This year I decided to leave my stills camera at home and get some video footage instead - 30 minutes on three cameras were then compiled to make this little film. Huge thanks to my parents’ friend Steve Hughes for kindly wearing one of our GoPros into the water (he actually partakes in the swimming each year) and enabling us to stay warm and dry. The slow-mo water footage is from the POV of Steve’s chest. :) The Exmouth Christmas Swim has been an annual tradition in this small Devonshire town for around 50 years, starting in the late 1960s with a group of six swimmers. It seems to grow in size each year and there are now thousands of swimmers and spectators on the beach by 11am each December 25th. Many of the swimmers don fancy dress (what we Brits call costume), usually with a Christmas theme, and last time there was even a man in a neon green Rudolph mankini. Maybe next time I will join them … This was our first time trying out the Karma Grip for GoPro. It is pretty great! I don’t like it quite as much as the DJI Osmo in terms of controls, but I found the battery life to be MUCH better, and it means I can blend the footage from multiple sources more easily (I’m already having to deal with GoPro and Sony files).
