Docking fails. Docking disaster single handed. It was the 1.st of December 2017 when I left Valencia, Spain heading south for the Spanish Africa coast. First stop on the way was Denia, about 40 Nm from Valencia. The weather forecasts for the day was pretty chill, and in the Marina in Valencia it was just a little breeze, but all that changed once I was out of the Marina. Winds and waves increased thru out the day and when I entered the Marina in Denia it gusted up to 36 knots and the average was well above 30 knots of wind. It was very difficult to controle the boat as the wind was more powerful than the engine from some angles. I believed the Marina VHF channel was displayed at the entrance to the marina, but it was not. (Yes, I was new to the Mediterranean sailing scene) and I didn't have a marina guide onboard. I ended up smasing hard against the petrol quay where I spent 2 nights before I continued. Boat docking failed, or at least it wasn’t pretty. Please do give the video a thumbs up if you like it, comments are always welcome and don't forget to subscribe if you are new to my channel. This Edel 43 is a uniquely versatile craft that can serve as a comfortable private cruising cat, as it does for its current owners, or makes a fantastic day charter cat. It was recently outfitted by a professional boatbuilder who has owned several sailing cats. She is loaded with clever upgrades and specked to run on solar and alternator power. It is ICW friendly and accommodates up to 6 passengers in 3 cabins. A fourth cabin is a workshop. There are two galleys on the boat: one on deck and another below. Some of the highlights include: recent twin Volvo 30 HP engines with only 350 hours, 2 galleys, full hard top bimini that covers the entire cockpit, dual steering stations, solar panels, new chart plotter, sound system and VHF. The boat also has an ICOM SSB radio, charger/inverter, a freezer and two fridge (one fro each galley), including a large one on deck. Designed and built in France. A proper 64 rig (fits under the bridges), large mainsail. jib and asymmetric spinnaker keep it always a sailor's cat.
E90 Vlog of Life in a Nutshell sailing travels. Life goes on in the little town of Puerto Madero and we are getting used to the everyday routine. We are busy in the boat yard with plenty of boat jobs to do. Magnus make plans for the cover for the cockpit and Wendy makes a start on ideas for the new upholstery in the saloon. The anchor gets a makeover and Magnus gives Nutshell’s hull more attention. Yet more locker clearcuts. We are finally beginning to see the end of the endless cavities. Thank you all for watching and supporting this amazing adventure. I make travel vlogs sharing my ups and downs, adventures on motorbikes, sailboats, and vans. Instagram: @Finding_Simon Snapchat: Finding_Simon Twitter: @FindingSimon Donations: paypal.me/ShelbyandSimon Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon Merchandise: http://simonstiles.com/finding-simon/ :::::::FAQ::::::: - How do you afford to travel constantly? A: I travel really cheap, free camping, cooking my own meals, being as efficient as possible. I make my income almost entirely on YouTube but it's really tight. Ad revenue, patreon, paypal donations, merchandise sales and affiliate links bring in about as much as a part time minimum wage job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough I go back to work, doing photography mostly, sometimes commercial video projects, but it takes me away from my travels and videos. - How much does it cost? I spend on average $2000 travelling, most of which is gas, some repairs, food, and on average less than $200 on any eating out, shopping or extra curricular expenditures. I make $200 a month from YouTube and $400 from Patreon. The rest I make from my work. - What camera do you use? Sony A7ii, DJI Mavic Pro, Rode Videomic with Deadcat, Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, DIY tripods and lights. - What is your bike? 1999 Yamaha Vstar XVS1100 with a Champion Escort sidecar. - What kind of boat is that? It's a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 - What're your plans? Fix it up, run nothing but green power, sail off into the sunset. - How do you find all these cool places? To gain access to my complete research you need to hit me up on Patreon, but here's a few sites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/ https://www.campendium.com/ http://www.atlasobscura.com/ https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - What do you do for Internet? I use coffeeshops and libraries to upload episodes a few at a time, I also use my wifi antenna (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5T9lNM8Mukk&t=2s) and a data package on my phone (10GB) - How do you live on the road with a dog? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with my dog anyways, especially if it's warm out in the middle of the day. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make some decisions, avoiding places that ban dogs, and spending more time out in nature instead of in the cities. - What happened to the girl? We decided to go separate ways (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPgxDIXxCjY&t=4s) - Are you rich or something? definitely not. I've spent some quality time homeless, I've struggled financially most of my life, and although I'm blessed with great friends and family as well as being able bodied white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to travel the world. You need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, time with family, and often your career but it is possible. - Why don't you have 10x more subscribers? My channel isn't that old, many of the bigger channels you can compare mine to started putting out videos a couple years before I began. I could always use your help sharing my videos, spreading the word, and connecting with cross promotional opportunities. Editing and travelling tend to take up all my time. - Where are you now? The top perk on my Patreon page is a live link of my location on google maps so you can get an active idea of where I am currently. If that's not an option for you there's also Instagram and Instagram stories that give you a much better idea of what I'm up to today.

Riley and Josje left me onboard by myself to go and hike a red hill on the island of La Graciosa. The wind picked up to 32 knots, gusting to 35 and the two boats next to me left to find shelter one having dragged anchor first. I’d stayed home to catch up on some work but because stress levels were through the roof, I didn’t get a thing done. But I’m glad I did stay home, because we would have never of known about the sudden change in the weather all the way up on that hill. One engine wasn’t working and the other wasn’t 100% reliable (the same problem with the control boxes needing replacing and a jump start was required if you wanted to fire it up before then). Not the end of the world unless you need to get out of somewhere quickly and you’re a one woman show. Join us in the Canary Islands for an ADVENTURE. It's Josje on YouTube!
