With just a week left before sailing from Maine to Cape Cod, time is ticking. A major improvement includes permanently mounting the solar panels to the shrouds, leading Steve to an unfavorable task of drilling a hole into Arabella’s locust covering boards. Recent sewing projects include a pouch for the reef lines on the boom and a berth lee cloth to prevent anyone from falling out of their bunk. Tasks below the waterline—an anode replacement on the propeller and a good scrape to the bottom—call for a diver. Taking a break from the epic to-do list, Steve enjoys a major perk of living on the Maine coast—lobstering. Fun fact: bands are placed on lobsters to not only protect humans, but to protect themselves from each other. Without bands, lobsters will attack. After checking on the traps a week after setting them, a nice lobster dinner is enjoyed by all. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! This week: More boat maintenance! After asking all of you last week what kind of sealant we should use to re-bed the windows on our 40ft sailboat, we went out and bought the most recommended option, which was Butyl tape! And then added a couple of other options because.....well, we could. We used Fischer Marine Sealant and the cheapest silicone we could find. We've had plenty of experience with Sikaflex at this point and opted to leave it out of the mix. We went for this triple pronged approach to see which adhesive we liked the best for a marine environment, considering we needed to adhere a very oily wood to fibreglass to glass. I hope this video might be a useful rough guide to anyone considering resealing their own windows (or a disgraceful example if you are an industry professional that might do things a little neater). The one thing we can be sure of after this- all the windows are watertight for the time being (based on the last couple of downpours). Feel free to leave comment for how you may have done it different so myself and others can read and become a little wiser. Boat window restoration of the incompetent crew kind. A boatlife vlog of the most mundane sort of boatwork there is. As always, thanks for being here! In this video we fix a problem with the forward decks shape. When we installed them they didn't bend as well as they should have.
So my new 12 volt duel sided fridge came in and let me tell you that it feels good to have a cold drink at the ready. Usually I drink room temp water most of the day and go to the store for at least one cold drink to have for dinner so this is living in luxury. I also bought a 26 inch tv that won’t use up to much power cause as you know I only have the two 100 watt solar panels up right now so my electricity is limited until I get the wind turbine up. (Which is soon I’m just waiting on the post) my dvd collection is coming along nicely as well…. I can tell you that living aboard is very humbling and it allows me to slow down and appreciate the smallest things (like electricity).. #viralvideo #sea #florida #boatmaintenance #adventure #fypage #liveaboard #patreon #sailboat #ocean #dayslikethese #lukecombs

Just as we were about to depart on a complicated passage from New Zealand to Tonga, we discover something is seriously wrong with our engine. Specifically the shaft does not seem to be turning the propellor around. Without the ability to drive the boat forward, we had to get towed into the marina and then faced the huge task of finding the spares and a way to repair this fault. We have commitments to be in Fiji for a wedding but weather windows and fellow sailors keep passing us by. The weather gets colder, our visa run out and the stress intensifies. However, we find solace in the beautiful walks around this beautiful place in the bay of Islands in New Zealand. Go To PATREON ...and .... This week, two intrepid sailors find themselves in a new city and take on the arduous task of enjoying themselves once again! Despite all of Ben's groaning and moaning, we manage to find pleasure in the necessary tasks involved in caring for a classic 1976 sailboat. In the beginning of our ownership of Ol' Gwen, we found ourselves in the north of England where even our ultra modern (read: expensive) waterproofs would eventually become soggy in the unrelenting downpours which plague the area. As we prepared the boat for a North to South crossing of the Bay of Biscay, we toyed with the idea that perhaps all of this boat maintenance wouldn't be so bad if it were only sunny! Was it just ultra clever procrastination tactics that led us to this conclusion, or was it truth? Either way, it was a fantastic ruse which allowed us to delay the many tasks that still needed doing on this boat. And staying true to our clever nature, we have continued to tell ourselves that the jobs might be slightly more enjoyable in a different area, in different weather, or perhaps when we're connected to shore power at the next marina down. But eventually our delusions of the work magically completing itself had to dissipate and we find ourselves in this episode which you're watching right now. Moaning and groaning, yet still sanding strong. (heh heh.. get it?? that was not a typo, my dear viewer). And after all of that, you may ask yourself the same questions we did as you look towards your own sailboat maintenance. Questions such as 'should I put this job off for now, and sail thousands of miles to somewhere the work might be more enjoyable to do, and the beers cheaper yet'? Well, we can tell you today that sanding and varnishing an old yacht is marginally better when you're doing so under blue skies. At the risk of being bad influences, we would recommend leaving for your grand adventures, and not let small complications such as poor woodwork or subpar lighting or even mold-inducing bed supports hold you back! Those things can be dealt with later. And at the end of the day, watching us tour historically important locations is probably a better use of time. Not to mention learning about the food and culture of the Andalucian region of Spain! Now that I think about it, this video should class as educational! Where else will you find a first hand account of an English lad sipping a classic Salmorejo as he gives his feet a rest from a long morning spent roaming the hallways of a centuries old Monastery? Actually, as I make jokes about our silly videos being educational, I'd like to take a moment to thank you, dear viewer. Thank you for taking the time to comment on our videos and educate us! Whether you've taken the time to enlighten us about the sunfish we sailed pass, or to drop a bit of wisdom on your preferred method and substance for sealing a window on a boat, we appreciate you being here on this journey with us. :) I hope you enjoy the video. Anodes for your sailboat come in a lot of shapes and sizes. Choosing the right anode to avoid galvanic corrosion and protect your boat is critical in your boat maintenance routine. Aluminum anodes, zinc anodes, and magnesium anodes can be used in different waters. Salt water and fresh water play a big role in choosing the right anode for your boat. Our BOAT has a serious ELECTROLYSIS problem | Sailing Africa Welcome back to our floating home, for those just joining tuning in, we are a sailing family, who set off from New Zealand six years ago with first three children, then two, then one, and right now none. We are empty nesters for the next few weeks. We have lots of sailboat maintenance to keep us occupied, after an incident in Zanzibar involving the windless, the anchor chain and a coral bommie highlighted a serious electrolysis problem with our windless that needs attention. Arriving back to Arabella after so long spent away was a bittersweet moment. Although excited to move on and start doing the types of adventures that Arabella was built for, the passing of Steve's mom is a somber point from which to begin again. After recounting how his mom's illness has been an integral part of Arabella's journey to the water, it's time to find out where Steve and Robin plan to head to first in search of warm waters for the coming winter. Then it's off to Boothbay, Maine to get to work on the boat. Before Arabella can continue on her journey, Steve has quite the to-do list for refitting the boat—including building a real dodger to replace the wonky, makeshift dodger that has seen its days. A familiar cast of characters comes to lend a hand to get as much done as possible for Arabella to be ready for distant travels. It's about time to head south! When I visited Europe in 2020, I quickly discovered that it's near impossible to get a propane tank refilled there. At least in Ireland and Spain, nearly everyone who cooks with gas uses the Campingaz exchange tanks which can be found in most grocery stores and gas stations. Last summer I had a similar experience in Canada, and increasingly the US seems to prefer tank exchanges over refill stations. But my propane locker is specifically designed for the 10 lb aluminum tanks. The 20 lb steel exchange tanks will not fit. So what to do? Our 600 Mile Sail Plan: We left New York Harbor at 7:30 AM with a narrow weather window to make some good progress south before tropical storm Idalia came in. Our goal was to make Delaware Bay and wait things out. Our reality - we skipped Delaware and kept sailing to shelter in the Chesapeake. Yacht insurance is becoming increasingly difficult to find. Many insurers are leaving the pleasure yacht sector and prices seem to be going up, or restrictions becoming prohibitive, for those who are left. We are more often asked about insurance, by viewers, than anything else. And that includes where to sail and which boat is best! We've changed insurers 3 times in the last 3 years. We couldn't find affordable insurance for our Atlantic crossing (we went with 3rd party insurance only). Not only would we have had to have a full survey but also at least one other person with ocean crossing experience onboard. On reaching the Caribbean we thought we would find insurance locally at a cheaper rate but couldn't. Our previous insurer wanted 5 times the amount we were paying in the Mediterranean and they also wanted an out of water survey (something that is often asked for every 5-10 years Stateside). Fortunately we found Velos who had a more reasonable premium and didn't insist on an out of water survey. This was because they took the time to know who we are as cruisers and that we live aboard and maintain our boat well (fortunately, filming our regular maintenance for YouTube has documented this quite well). But the point is, Velos is a yacht broker who wants to get to know their customers and we have to thank Velos (specifically, Kel) for coming up with a quote that is affordable for us in the Caribbean and (Stephan) for agreeing to be interviewed for this report when no one else would (we asked several brokers to take part). If you want to get a quote from Velos, then please visit their website (https://velosinsurance.co.uk/) and hit the “Get a Quote” button, follow the prompts and then complete the form. This will collate all the information they need in a format approved by insurers and once they have it, Kel will go through any questions you may have. email : insurance@velosgroup.co.uk phone: +44 (0) 20 7929 4058 (option 2 and ask for Kel) website: https://velosinsurance.co.uk And remember if you are in the difficult position of being a US flagged vessel wanting to sail outside US waters then Velos can do that. They can also write business for EU flagged vessels. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ PLEASE DO SUBSCRIBE - IT COSTS YOU NOTHING AND HELPS US OUT WITH THE YOUTUBE ALGORITHM ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PATREON: We couldn't make these videos without the support of you, our patrons. More upgrades for my 1987 Precision 16 (hull #296) project boat's old trailer. This time it's new wheel fenders, a trailer winch, and an improved mast crutch. The Precision 16 is a lightweight Stephen Seaton-designed un-ballasted centerboard sailing dinghy with a planing hull manufactured from 1982 until the mid 90s. It was superseded in 1995 by the smaller Jim Taylor-designed Precision 15 (P-15CB and P-15K). #sailing #trailermaintenance #usedboat #boatrepair #projectboat

The next day , after a muddy hike back to the boat, we do a brisk downwind sail to Opua to start getting ready for our big sail out of New Zealand . The weather does not look good for this passage so we get busy taking a trip on an old vintage railway and set off to find the biggest Kauri trees in New Zealand . However, things take a turn for the worst as will be revealed in the next episode ( sorry for the cliff hanger ) ;) Music in this video deserves a Thanks to : " Follow The Road" by Josh Woodward. In this episode, we kick off the first big projects to make our custom aluminum sailboat fully off-grid ready! We start by cutting into wood to install a 12V drawer fridge, an essential upgrade for living off the grid. Next, we tackle a big decision: keep the heavy hard dinghy or switch back to Patches, our (kind of) inflatable? After a test ride, we weigh the options. Finally, we dive into a DIY project to replace Yanmar engine mounts with a budget-friendly alternative, Ellebogen, on our Yanmar 4JH2E. Join us as we take on these projects to turn our boat into the ultimate off-grid sailing and living beast! In this episode we are becalmed in northern France, so take the opportunity to haul out Maalie and clean the hull. Whilst we have the opportunity we tend to some vital maintenance by re-packing the stuffing box, and finally replacing the Jabsco water pump on the engine. To those who have pondered this stuff and want to explore some more - Welcome! - this is a side quest to the sailing. As there’s not been much sailing, I’ve had little to say recently but we’re coming back into maintenance season now and my thoughts today turned to jobs like lifting the boat out, removing the mast and rudder, all of which require cranes, lifts and rigging systems involving a lot of advanced techniques and technology to make happen- and always spits me to think once again of how our ancestors did what they did. HOW. I don’t really mind how, or how old, or who or whether it was done by slave armies over decades or unknown techniques in years - the HOW must be something we living today can work out if we just examine the problem carefully . So I suggest employing the best modern practical problem solving minds to examine what would have been the minimum required tooling to create the results we see today in ancient monuments all round the world. I don’t want to prove how advanced anyone was; I want to find the minimum, realistic, long term working methods that could lead to the results we still marvel at today. Because with my knowledge of moving heavy loads and rope technology and techniques there are massive holes in the existing literature. If you enjoy sailing, which is after all, the practical application of human force to conquer the elements- then perhaps today I will get your subscription and a like & comment. - Sailing will recommence very soon.
