Continuing my rehabilitation of a 1987 Precision 16 sailing dinghy by replacing the centerboard trunk’s wood trim with a piece of HDPE from TAP Plastics. During the repair, I also discovered some damage to the trailing edge of the centerboard which I repaired with JB Marine Weld epoxy. The Precision 16 is a lightweight Stephen Seaton-designed un-ballasted centerboard sailing dinghy with a planing hull manufactured from 1982 until the mid 90s. It was superseded in 1995 by the smaller Jim Taylor-designed Precision 15 (P-15CB and P-15K). Here’s a little update on the cockpit enclosure project 🪡 - on day 94 of our countdown before we set sail!! The status? It’s going well. After the fourth test fitting, I have a good gut feeling about it, and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. ✨ This process has been frustrating! But honestly, that’s how we’ve felt about every boat project. And yet, every time we overcome one, we sit back and think, 😎 That was so worth it! 😎 And even better—we did it ourselves. Which means we now know exactly how thinks are build or made on our boat. It’s Arabella Demolition Day, folks! This week, I’m dismantling our on-deck nav station and engine control panel, and rebuilding one big station to house all of our gadgets and gizmos: the chart plotter, wind reader, VHF radio, engine controls, and our new Pelagic autopilot…which we hope will be our LAST autopilot for a while. While I was building Arabella, a few people recommended that I put the engine control panel in the nav station under our dodger, but I was unsure how much the nav station was going to block our view while steering, and wanted to keep it as small as possible. Now that we have a few thousand miles under the keel, I can see that a wider nav station wouldn’t impede our visibility at all…and we’ve had a few electrical issues with the control panel due to exposure and corrosion. It’s time to move this thing… I’m also going to take the opportunity to swap my 10” and 12” chart plotters, bringing the 12” plotter up on deck. Step one: dismantle the engine control panel. Step two: deep dive into the engine room to find the electrical connections, which are somewhat “prepped” to be sliced, diced, and re-wired into the new nav station. Step three: Dismantle the existing on-deck nav station. Step four: Build the new nav station, starting with jointing and planing the edge of a few cherry boards. I opted to use TotalBoat’s TotalBond instead of a heavier-duty epoxy, since this isn’t structural. I also opted to do my woodworking in a wood shop instead of on our workbench—huge thank you to Michael for letting me use your shop! I had to be careful cutting the box joints. I had some margin for error on the panel that wouldn’t be visible on deck, but needed to nail my cuts on the other panel. With the shape of the box starting to come together, it was time to map out which gadgets and gizmos were going to go where, and start figuring out the best way to run wires to our various marine devices. Once done, it was time to test my wiring—would the engine fire up? Bingo! First try. Love when that happens! The new nav station looks great, I’m really happy with how it came out. Then, to circle back to some of the boat work I started last week, Robin and I went through and tightened up all of the new deadeye lacings on the shrouds up by the main mast. I went and tightened up the jib, as well, getting things ready for me to rig our new light wind sail from Doyle Sails. A short video on looking after a teak deck and what should be done in our opinion, vs what we see all too often. I don't think I have been in many marinas recently where I haven't seen somebody pressure washing a teak deck, and on a close passing, you can see that rebrightened teak. But you can see how soft and torn and damaged it has become. Is it bad to just McCartney it an 'let it be?' My personal feeling is- just go sailing and let the ocean wash it. After months of battling with our seized Phasor generator, this is it — the final push… or is it? In this episode, we wrap up the longest, most frustrating repair project we’ve ever tackled on our sailboat. We finish prepping the generator, face a few last surprises, and decide once and for all what we’re doing with this thing — maybe we’ll even just use it as a mooring at this point. Topless sunbathing, teak toerail work, stretching curves, and a sticky honey glaze... just another day aboard Isabella. We spotted a perfect rainbow—nature’s tease—and then got to work making our own shine. Steve sanded while Karen laid down a fresh coat of Sikkens Cetol on the teak toerail. Afterwards Karen did a little topless sunbathing on the aft deck. The view got Steve thinking things that had nothing to do with boat maintenance. Down below, a sexy new Caframo Sirocco II fan started blowing... and it’s not the only thing that got turned on. We tracked down a propane leak under the cockpit lazarette—because explosions kill the mood. Things got smoother with some slow waltz steps. Then hotter—with ribeye steak strips drenched in a sticky honey-soy-garlic sauce that had Karen licking her lips. She followed it up with some deep stretching on deck. Steve couldn’t focus on anything else. And of course, we danced... because movement is foreplay when you live on a boat. It’s not just sailing. It’s sweat, seduction, and a splash of salt.
