With a two-week wind forecast pointing east, we take the opportunity to set sail in that direction — a move that not only suits the weather but also brings us closer to the beautiful Maddalena Archipelago. After the long passage from Sicily, it’s time to give Helios a bit of the love and care she deserves. We spend some time cleaning, polishing stainless steel, and taking care of the little things that keep her running smoothly. Not everything goes to plan though — Richard is called into action for some emergency windlass maintenance. Luckily, there are far worse places in the world to turn a wrench. This episode captures the rhythm of sailing life: balancing the magic of the journey with the work it takes to keep it all afloat. A mini problem for the day, over the thousands of miles, we have slowly had this footplate degrade, glue dry out and ultimately most the wooden slats have lived in a drawer for a few months now. Time to fix it.

A calm morning in Marion Harbor makes for the perfect day to deal with the rot I found in Arabella’s bowsprit while we were back in Miami. What I thought was just a small spot of rot turned out to be a bit bigger than I had imagined—an indication that this rot was probably built into the bowsprit during construction. After all, when we selected which spruce stock to use for the main mast, the booms, the gaffs, and the bowsprit, the best quality wood was used for the mast, and the lowest quality wood was used for the bowsprit. There must have been a small rotten spot that we didn’t notice in the spruce we used for the bowsprit. Fortunately, the bowsprit is a laminate, which means the glue lines act as rot stops. This undoubtedly prevented the rot from spreading into the boards above and below it. I couldn’t get to the spruce in our storage container back in Granby, but I could get to a piece of hundred-year-old Douglas fir from Victoria’s main mast, which I’m completely comfortable gluing into the bowsprit. With the graving piece in place—glued in with TotalBoat Thixo Flex—I got to work with my hand planer. It’s not easy to hand plane while standing in a dinghy, but I eventually got the job done. While waiting for the weather to cooperate with the rest of the bowsprit work, I decided to tackle another boat project: tightening the rig. When we launched, we used a fairly elastic dyneema for the deadeye lacings. This unfortunately didn’t keep our rig very tight, and we keep having to snug up, and snug up, and snug up loose stays. Now, I’m planning on switching out our deadeye lacings for new lacings made from heat-set dyneema, which has 1% stretch compared to 4% in our original dyneema. I’ll also be able to splice the heat-set dyneema, which I wasn’t able to do with our last deadeye lacings. I start by installing the lacings on each stay. Then the fun part: splicing and snugging it all up. If you’ve ever wondered how to splice dyneema, there are plenty of resources online—including this video—to walk you through the process. You just need a splicing tool and a little bit of patience. Tightening up the rig opens the door for us to get our new light wind sail installed. The sail—which is similar to a Code Zero—is much larger than our jib, and will allow us to make way when the winds are less than 10 kts. Along with a new sail comes new lines, so off to Rigging Only we go. Dan has been hooking us up with quality line for years, and we fully trust his recommendations. But back to the bowsprit for a few more fixes…it’s time to install oak cheeks to reduce crushing the soft spruce under the washers. While I was back in Granby, I grabbed a hole saw to help with this part of the project. Tune in next week to see the finished bowsprit, and the rest of the work we got done in preparation for our sail up to Nova Scotia. -------------------------- Donate to Ben's PMC ride: https://egifts.pmc.org/PMC/BF0201 -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Purchasing a boat through co-ownership is a concept that appeals to some boating enthusiasts while deterring others. This article delves into the intricacies of boat co-ownership, highlighting its benefits and drawbacks to provide a comprehensive understanding of this purchasing option. Co-ownership allows multiple individuals to share the financial burden and usage of a boat, making it a more affordable option compared to sole ownership. The primary advantage is the significant reduction in individual expenses related to the purchase, maintenance, and storage of the boat. By sharing these costs, co-owners can enjoy the benefits of boat ownership without the full financial strain. However, co-ownership is not suitable for everyone and requires careful consideration of several factors. Key considerations include the compatibility and harmony among co-owners to ensure smooth and conflict-free usage of the boat. Financial stability and compatible schedules are also crucial to ensure that all parties can contribute financially and have equal opportunities to use the boat. A well-drafted contract is essential to outline the rights and responsibilities of each co-owner, including the distribution of costs, usage schedules, and procedures for conflict resolution and the eventual sale of the boat. Insurance and mooring arrangements must also be addressed, with the insurance company informed about the co-ownership structure. Appointing a manager to handle communications and cost distributions can streamline these processes. Consulting a notary is advisable to ensure the legality of the co-ownership contract and to navigate the fiscal implications. The cost of notary services typically ranges below 1000 euros for a standard co-ownership arrangement. In some cases, appointing a manager for the co-ownership can facilitate smoother operations. This manager, who can be one of the co-owners or an external party, oversees the financial and operational aspects of the co-ownership. The contract should include provisions for the eventuality of the manager's death to avoid legal complications and ensure the continuity of co-ownership operations. In conclusion, boat co-ownership can be an excellent solution for those dreaming of sailing while mitigating the associated costs and responsibilities. It is vital to be well-informed about the legal and fiscal aspects and to draft a comprehensive co-ownership contract. Seeking the guidance of a professional, such as a notary, can provide valuable support in this process.

As part of our ongoing DIY refit, we’re sharing what’s working, what’s not, and how we’re getting her ready for mediterranean sailing again. if you're into liveaboard life, sailing with dogs, family cruising or remote working while exploring by boat — you’ll feel right at home here. Thanks for watching! The sea calls to those who listen. It speaks of freedom, adventure, and the unknown. We are Daria, Chris, and Jasper - we sail with two golden retrievers, Hachi and Luna. We recently lost our Bernese Mountain Dog, Mimsy. (RIP 09.02.2025). Our floating home, Ragdoll, has taken us on an incredible journey across the Atlantic coast, from the west coasts of Scotland to the sun-drenched waters of the Mediterranean. For two years, we lived aboard a 47ft monohull. Now, we’ve started on a new adventure aboard our 2008 Fountaine Pajot Orana 44, embracing the beauty, chaos, and unpredictability of life at sea. Full-time work, homeschooling, storms, sunsets—this is our reality. No script. No certainty. Just wind, waves, and the endless blue. Join us as we navigate life on the water, one adventure at a time. 💙 Enjoy our content? Don’t be a stranger! Subscribe, hit that like button, and ring the bell so you never miss an episode. Your support means the world to us, and we love hearing from you in the comments! 🐾 Who are we? We’re a family of three with two adventure-loving dogs. Sailing with pets isn’t always easy, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. We started our journey exploring the remote and breathtaking Scottish isles before setting course for the Mediterranean in 2023. With no fixed route, we go where the wind and life take us. ⛵ Ragdoll is now a 2008 Fountaine Pajot Orana 44, a catamaran that gives us more space, comfort, and stability as we continue our life at sea. My third sail of the new-to-me 1987 Precision 16 sailing dinghy I purchased locally for $650 at Cherry Creek Reservoir in Aurora, Colorado. The Precision 16 is a lightweight Stephen Seaton-designed un-ballasted centerboard sailing dinghy with a planing hull manufactured from 1982 until the mid 90s. In this video, I make textile screens as sun protection for our boat. This reduces the amount of sunlight by over 90 % and still gives us a good view to the outside. The material I use is Soltis 86, Tenax buttons, webbing, clip fasteners, Velcro and Serabond sewing thread. This is not an advert as I bought the material regularly. This type of sun protection can also be used in other areas, such as on roof windows, motorhome windows, as an awning or sun sail or as a balcony screen.

There’s a lot to consider when you live on a boat full-time, but these five systems have made a big difference to how we manage life afloat. From maintenance to log books, to task and tide tracking, these are the systems we’ve found ourselves relying on the most during our first months living aboard. We’re sharing what works for us not because we’ve got it all figured out - far from it - but in the hope it might help someone else at the beginning of their sailing journey. When we first started out, it all felt a bit daunting. So seeing what other cruisers used (and why) gave us something to hold on to. These systems have been reassuring and grounding for us in these early stages, and hopefully they’ll help someone else feel a little more prepared too. Thanks for watching. We’re still anchored just off the boatyard, waiting for our new engine to arrive — but this week, the crew feels complete again. Timo’s daughters, Nami and Tea, are spending the summer with us, and it’s the first time they’ve met their baby brother. To keep our hands (and heads) busy, we tackled a small but satisfying family project: refitting our little sailing dinghy to carry more weight and stop water spilling in through the open stern. We towed it ashore, made templates, cut salvaged fibreglass we found at sea, and taught the kids how to lay it up properly. Between resin layers, we patched bean bags, walked into town to chase customs paperwork, and checked on the final parts needed to install our long-awaited engine. This is what boat life looks like when you’re not going anywhere — real projects, tight quarters, and a whole lot of family. — 🛠 Subscribe to follow along as we get closer to installing our new engine and setting sail again! 📸 Find us on Instagram: @sailing.nv + @sailing.mum 💬 Say hi in the comments — we love hearing from you 🎥 Watch more of our refit journey here: [link to playlist if applicable] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you'd like to support us on Patreon, our website https://www.patreon.com/SailingNV or with a one-off donation via https://ko-fi.com/sailingnv or paypal https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/sailingnv or if you'd like to help us buy something we need, you can check out our amazon wish list https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1G2NJ0EGJLKR0?ref_=wl_share ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ #SailingFamily #SailboatRefit #DIYBoatProject

We’re back at it again in this episode as we fight to bring our seized Phasor marine generator back to life! Boat life isn’t always paradise — sometimes it’s days (or MONTHS) of troubleshooting, wrenching, and problem-solving just to keep your floating home extra powered. In this part of the series, we tackle the dilemma of our generator, prep the fluids, and get ready for the first big test start. Of course, nothing ever goes to plan — but that’s life on a sailboat! If you’re researching how to fix a seized generator, curious about marine diesel engines, or love following real-life boat projects, you’re in the right place. 🛠️ Subscribe for more liveaboard life, boat repair videos, and off-grid sailing adventures! 👍 Like this video if you enjoy seeing real DIY repairs and comment with your best tips for unseizing an engine! We first arrived in a remote, untouched bay on the island of Buru after sailing 300nm through strong, relentless winds. The crossing was wild—salt spray in our faces, sails straining, and the sea rolling with energy. Dropping anchor in that secluded bay felt like entering another world. There were no signs of modern life—just dense jungle, silence, and the sound of waves brushing the shoreline. After catching our breath there, we set sail again—this time for a much longer passage. We covered over 200 nautical miles across the Banda Sea, eventually reaching Wangi-Wangi in Sulawesi. From there, we continued on to the coastal town of Wakatobi, where we finally found the people we had heard so much about: the Bajo. They live almost entirely on the water—homes on stilts, boats tucked under houses, and women floating between the houses with effortless grace. Spending time with them felt like stepping into a living myth. They’re the sea people who inspired the ocean tribes in Avatar: The Way of Water, and you can see why. Their bond with the ocean runs deeper than anything we’ve ever seen—it's not just how they live, it's who they are. The next day, we wandered through the local market, a vibrant chaos of smells and color. Women were expertly chopping massive slabs of tuna—clean cuts through fish the size of small sharks. I bought a pile still fresh and cold from the early morning catch, and carried it all back to the boat...my provisioning was complete. It was a journey of extremes—ferocious winds, long blue miles, and moments of quiet wonder among people whose way of life seems more water than land. After a quick marina repair in Rabat, Morocco, we cast off for a 480 nautical mile offshore sailing passage toward the Canary Islands. With a well-prepped sailboat and favorable weather, we were hopeful—but not fully ready for how physically draining the days ahead would be. This wasn’t a journey filled with stormy drama. It was a slow-burning challenge in endurance, patience, and quiet teamwork. From fixing gear underway to managing fatigue and navigating in silence, this offshore sailing experience reminded us just how much our sailboat carries—not just physically, but emotionally too. Join us on this long-distance sailing adventure as we move through the Atlantic swell, share the stillness between watches, and reflect on the rhythm of bluewater cruising. It’s a raw, honest glimpse into what sailing the world as a liveaboard couple really looks like—mile by mile, moment by moment. Whether you dream of the sailing lifestyle, are planning your first cruising sailboat journey, or just love being part of the saltlife from afar, we hope this passage speaks to you. Facing the challenges of solo sailing as a female sailor, I navigated the highs and lows of single-handed sailing while tackling DIY boat repair projects, from engine fixes to full boat refits on a budget. My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. Along the way, I became an ocean conservation activist with In Mocean, stumbled across my dog Boga, and discovered the joys and challenges of sailing with a dog.
