For us yachties there is a time limit between checking out of Langkawi in Malaysia and checking in at Ao Chalong in Phuket, 150 or so miles north. Unfortunately, disaster strikes as our starter motor dies... In the midday heat we empty the lazarette of jerry cans, rope, hoses, drinks, generator and fishing paraphernalia where we find Jamie sweating his nuts off... It's evening, and we still haven't started the engine. In complete darkness the mechanic turns up and after a quick check wants to bring aboard his own battery to crank the engine. Despite assuring him all our batteries are fully charged he insists. Getting a 20kilo truck battery off his longtail and onto Esper wasn't easy. After inspecting the starter motor the mechanic tells us he must take it to Satun on mainland Thailand to be repaired. This involves a ferry and a bus journey and will take three days. TOW AND LEAVING With fixed starter motor and replaced hoses it's time to start the engine and make our way out of Ko Lipe, having spent a week longer at anchor than originally anticipated. Just when we thought things couldn't get any worse... Despite this frustrating situation we did manage to get one last sail in back to Langkawi. We make our way to Langkawi Yacht Club where we experience our first proper storm since leaving the boatyard. The list of jobs goes on as we get steadily more depressed. There's the fixing of loose panels, the replacement of fuel hoses, installation of the halyard wrap preventer at the top of the mast ... Meanwhile, we tackle the two morse cables that had caused us trouble at anchor in Ko Lipe. We decide to completely overhaul the gearbox, so call in local mechanic, Zainol, who comes recommended by a few yachties and a local friend. He and his son work together to remove both the gearbox and the old damping plate, which we'll also replace. Although we're satisfied that we've made the right decision to service the gearbox we now have to order parts from the UK to be sent out by a specialist dealer. At this rate we'll be lucky if we catch any of the sailing season. ****************************** The fantastic music on this video comes under the Creative Commons license.
