Converting a 54yo Airstream to a Tiny Home

DEMOLITION CONTINUES! This episode we gut the entire Airstream trailer & find some prettyyy interesting things! We had only 60 days to make this tiny home on wheels move-in ready. And we had lots to do! In the state she was in, living in this thing full-time would clearly have been a health hazard! Yikes! We had done our research and so we knew that renovating a 50 year old Airstream trailer was going to be ALOT of work! Especially since we were determined to complete the entire process ourselves and had to learn sooo many things along the way (we're healthcare professionals, not carpenters, electricians or plumbers!) Likeee what is the name of this tool I'm holding?! Ohhh it's a pipe wrench! Gotcha gotcha. Cool. Soo, what do I do with it??? The more we got into it, the dirtier & messier this tiny home project became AND the bigger it grew! This vintage Airstream was harboring five decades worth of dirt, grime & mold. So demolishing and ripping it apart was a little terrifying at times, because you never knew what weird, disgusting thing you were going to find lurking behind! We found all kinds of interesting specimens & critters hiding in & behind its old architecture and framing, which you'll get to see this episode as we finish up the demolition process & successfully clean out the entire trailer! I'll be honest (probably also a little naïve), when we started this project I didn't think we were going to demolish it like we did! I had a romantic vision that we would slowly restore this classic Airstream. Repairing & repurposing her vintage heritage one piece at a time. Slowly bringing her beautiful 1960's self back to life! Airstream-reno-guru's will tell you that a 'full' Airstream restoration would have involved us 'taking the skins' off. The skins (which we explain in more detail in episode 3) are the vinyl wraps that line the interior of the Airstream. But without a proper workshop and with our deadline looming, that sort of restoration was not going to be an option for us. ALL that is to say that we are kinda left with this lingering feeling of unfinished business. Which makes us think, WOULD we do it all over again? SHOULD we do it all over again? As in flip another vintage Airstream start to finish, skins off, full on?! Maybe! But we should probablyyy finish this one first... Come along for the rest of the journey as we share the entire process of this Airstream tiny home build as the first series on our YouTube channel! If you're into outdoor adventures, tiny homes (on wheels & with sails), off-grid living and DIY projects, then you'll want to click that notification bell & follow along ;) WHO WE ARE We are a couple from opposite sides of the world making life together in a teeny-tiny 160 square feet. Our current tiny home is a vintage Airstream trailer nestled in the woods here in the Canadian Pacific Northwest! We like to call her Streamy - our adventure basecamp! When we're not enduring these self-imposed suffer-fests (i.e. our DIY projects & long grueling hikes up mountainsides) you'll find us out on the ocean, living and sailing around the PNW on our little sailboat. She's a Catalina 30 and we've been enjoying the challenge of restoring her & teaching ourselves how to sail! OUR STORY I (Allison, the Newfie) met James (the Aussie) while working on a remote island 3 years ago. A decade working in healthcare has helped us both to appreciate the preciousness of this one beautiful life we've been given. Viewing TIME as our most valuable gift, we've been feeling an urgency in our lives to Live All Out! We decided to make some BOLD moves, hit PAUSE on our conventional careers & work full time, turning our DREAMS into reality. This is the beginning of our YouTube journey & over the next few weeks we will be sharing our first steps towards making full-time adventure possible. We'll be posting weekly videos that document our DIY projects, tiny-home living & our land & sea adventures. It's exciting to post our first episode and we hope you enjoy! If you do please support us by clicking that like button and leaving a kind comment :) (the Youtube algorithm really likes that)!
