Our first taste of the country was Fernando de Noronha, a remote volcanic island sitting hundreds of kilometres off Brazil’s northeast coast. We only had a few days here, but somehow managed to squeeze in a little Portuguese, some local food, island exploring, history, buses, dune buggies and, of course, plenty of surf. This stop was always meant to be strategic as we continued north towards the Caribbean, but Fernando de Noronha quickly became one of those places we could have happily stayed much longer. As the Atlantic swell built, the anchorage became increasingly uncomfortable and our plans changed again. So after four short days, it was time to check out, stock up, lift anchor and keep moving.
