Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. EPISODE 335 Here's something most people don't realize about sailing: we spend about 80 to 90 percent of our time at anchor, not actually sailing. And honestly? Those are some of the best days. This is what a week at anchor in Fiji looks like for us: wing foiling, diving with black tip reef sharks, scuba diving incredible reefs, boat maintenance, and floating in the water with sundowners watching the sunset. This episode is all about finding that balance between staying active, exploring underwater, getting work done on the boat, and taking time to just be. This is the rhythm of cruising life. This is why we're out here. We spend time wing foiling in the anchorage, something I'm finally feeling confident doing again after my achilles recovery. We encounter black tip reef sharks cruising around the boat—elegant, sleek, beautiful animals that we never get tired of watching. They're curious, just like us. Not aggressive, but still wild. Still sharks. You respect them, watch them, appreciate them. The underwater footage from our scuba dive is some of the best we've captured in Fiji. Clear visibility, vibrant coral, abundant marine life. We get playful down there, explore, and just enjoy the freedom of being able to drop everything mid-day and spend an hour weightless on the reef. There's also boat work, because there's always boat work. I tackle a small project using Warren's tools, he does some engine maintenance, and we wrap up the day floating off the back of the boat with drinks in hand. This is the real cruising life that most people don't see. Not the passages or the big sailing days, but the weeks at anchor where we find our rhythm and remember exactly why we're doing this. Meglio comprare una barca o una casa al mare? Nautica in pillole: andiamo subito a vedere. Seguici! So già che sia gli amici delle agenzie immobiliari che i costruttori mi odieranno, ma spero in modo simpatico, per ciò che sto per dire. I vantaggi di avere una barca sono davvero tanti, e ora andremo a vedere nel dettaglio quali sono. 1. La vista mare Quando acquisti una casa con vista mare, hai sempre la stessa vista per tutta la vita. Con una barca, invece, puoi cambiare la tua vista ogni giorno, e non solo: puoi scegliere quale mare vedere. Puoi cambiare nazione, spostandoti dall'Italia alla Francia o alla Spagna, per esempio. Parlando del Mediterraneo, puoi spostarti ovunque tu voglia, dal Mar Adriatico fino al Mar Egeo, e oltre. E se sei stanco di una nazione, puoi sempre spostarti in un’altra, come la Croazia, per vivere nuove esperienze. 2. Libertà di movimento Indipendentemente dal tipo di barca che possiedi, hai sempre la possibilità e la libertà di muoverti. Se decidi che la tua barca sostituisce la casa, puoi tenerla in un porto fisso, magari in Montenegro per via del paesaggio o del compromesso tra prezzo e servizio. Ma ricorda: potrai sempre decidere di muoverla e andare in giro oppure rimanere fermo nello stesso porto. 3. Privacy totale Sulla tua barca puoi goderti il sole in modo integrale, senza preoccuparti di vicini indiscreti. Se scegli una cala appartata, nessuno potrà disturbarti o sbirciare nel tuo giardino, come potrebbe accadere con una casa. 4. Allontanarsi dai vicini fastidiosi Se il tuo vicino di casa è particolarmente antipatico o noioso, con una barca non avrai questo problema. Ti basta spostarti per trovare la tranquillità. 5. Comfort proporzionati al budget Dipende ovviamente dal budget a tua disposizione, ma la tua barca potrebbe avere tutti i comfort e le comodità di una casa. Potrai vivere comodamente, cucinare e svolgere tutte le attività quotidiane in un ambiente unico come quello di una barca. 6. Vantaggi fiscali Per barche fino a 14 metri non esistono tasse di possesso, al contrario delle case, che sono soggette all'IMU. 7. Scuse sociali Se non vuoi ospitare parenti o amici indesiderati durante le vacanze, la scusa della barca è perfetta: “La barca è piccola, non c’è spazio per tutti!” Anche se la tua barca è grande, questa scusa è sempre accettata. 8. Dimenticare l’automobile In barca, puoi spostarti da porto a porto, da nazione a nazione, senza dover pensare all’automobile. 9. Il fascino dell’avventura Vuoi mettere il fascino di raccontare una vacanza in barca? Ogni volta sarà un’avventura diversa, e ogni volta avrai un racconto unico da condividere. 10. Esperienze memorabili Le esperienze che viviamo restano impresse nella memoria, e in barca queste esperienze sono così intense da valere per una vita intera. In this episode, we make it to Taormina and drop anchor for the night. While we’re asleep, the weather takes an unexpected turn — this time for the better — so we decide to take advantage of the window and motor sail to Rochella through the Straits of Messina. We end up leaving about an hour later than planned, which means there’s a good chance we’ll arrive after dark. Still, it’s the only window all week where the wind and current aren’t working against each other, so we go for it. The crossing starts out calm, with the wind at around 35–37° apparent at 7-10 Knots , and as we turn the corner north, the swell builds a bit and the wind shifts to a perfect 60° apparent — not too strong, but ideal for a smooth sail. Unser Refit schreitet voran, dieses Mal stehen einige kleinere Arbeiten zu Hause in der Werkstadt an, an Bord wird die hintere Schottwand geprimert. Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei komplett überholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen. Enjoy this video of our winter maintenance programme of the fleets in the Saronic Gulf, Kefalonia and the Cyclades. This is just a snapshot and the team are hard at work the moment getting ready for the first flotilla on the 15th April. In more detail our maintenance programme is comprehensive from careful servicing of engines, transmissions, and outboards along with items like the steering systems, winches and electric windlass, to servicing the toilets and plumbing systems. We also check that all the electronics and instruments are working correctly. All the sails are carefully evaluated by our specialist partners at Quantum Sails and either replaced or serviced. The rigging is also checked by a specialist. It's comprehensive from treating and protecting the keels, right the way to checking the lights, sensors and aerial on the masthead.
