In this episode, my humans decide it’s finally time to tackle my hull… and honestly, I’ve never looked worse! 😩 What started as “just a bit of sanding” turned into rust, bare metal, barnacles, old paint, epoxy, wire brushes and A LOT of Graham suffering. Watch as they slowly strip me back, uncover my many colourful layers from over the years, repair the rust and finally start getting me ready for a whole new look. At one point Graham even looked like a blue Smurf. I found it hilarious. 😂 And yes… with hindsight, perhaps sandblasting me back to bare metal from the start would have been the quicker option. But hindsight is a wonderful thing, isn't it? Most importantly, we're still trying to uncover my history and find my original owners. Learn how to safely unfurl the jib on a Balance catamaran—from preparing the lines and coordinating with the helm to controlling the sail and trimming it for the course. In this video, we cover: • Checking that the jib sheet and furling line are clear • Coordinating between the helm and deck crew • Steering to the correct wind angle • Easing the furling line under control • Drawing the jib out smoothly without excessive flogging • Trimming the sail once it is fully deployed The key is control: maintain light tension on the furling line as the jib sheet is taken in, and keep the boat at a steady wind angle throughout the process. These principles apply broadly to Balance catamarans and other performance sailing catamarans, although every sail-handling system is different. In this video, we cover: • Identifying the halyard, tack connection and furling system • Confirming the sail is tightly furled before hoisting • Routing the sheets outside the standing rigging and lifelines • Checking that all lines are clear and free to run • Coordinating between the helm and deck crew • Hoisting smoothly and applying the correct luff tension • Completing final checks before unfurling Careful preparation is essential. A crossed sheet, twisted halyard or incorrect attachment can become much harder to correct once the sail is hoisted and under load. Bonjour à tous Nous sommes a Mesolonghi en Grèce. Pour y arriver un chenal de 40mn environs, a l'entrée du golf de Patras , sur babord. C'est très typique, des maisons sur pilotis, et une grande plage à l'entrée. Cela ressemble un peu au bassin d'Arcachon dit Olivier. au fond la marina sur la gauche, un quai public dans l'angle à droite, et au milieu un mouillage. Le mouillage se dit maintenant interdit et la guardia vient régulièrement déloger les bateaux au mouillage!!! Ils vous préviennent a la dernière minute, et même la nuit qu'il faut bouger. Il vaut mieux aller au port, ou sur le quai public. Bon film et à bientôt Isabelle

Greece marked its fishing nets with something red or white. Sicily improvised — an oil jar, but at least an orange one. In Spain a fisherman once used a life jacket, and the coastguard went full rescue mode thinking somebody was in the water. Portugal uses a single green plastic water bottle, floating flat, invisible to the eye and too small for the radar to see. Portugal is the final boss. This is the week we crossed the border. We left Mazagón at eight in the morning, spent nine hours dodging fishing gear and watching for fins, and somewhere off the coast went from one country to the next — which mostly meant an hour back on the clock and a green-and-red flag going up at the spreader. Then the entrance to Faro, a channel with tides, not much water and a plotter reading single figures. Two days on Ilha do Farol, an island of white houses and a red-and-white striped lighthouse you can see from the anchorage. Then the run to Portimão, which is the one that needed thinking about: the best orca ground sits right there, and about a hundred metres inshore of it the chart goes to three metres, then one. There is no comfortable line. This is the day the catamaran earned its keep. And then the job this whole leg has been waiting for. Our watermaker has been dead since Spain — no showers for a week, buying drinking water ashore. The new pumps were shipped to a yard that said they could fit them and then said they couldn't, so I did it on the cockpit table: one pump full of corrosion with the bearing ring destroyed and the rotor chewed up, one still working and going into the spares box. At half past one in the afternoon the pressure came up to six, and fresh water came out of the tap. Next week we head out into the Atlantic for Porto Santo.
