We are now at Formia just north of Naples and this week collect our new crew, Nellie who is Eli's sister. We share the struggles of getting harbour berths as many ports and marinas do not answer emails and many are full anyway. Even when there are berths, it seems like the staff can't be bothered with the work as we are told the visitors berths are full and I counted 4 free and I knew 3 other boats were leaving the next day! We run through the anchoring process for Nellie in detail and then she and Eli have to head off the France to collect our car, Oxley Parasailor, and top up on French cheese and wine. Also get some boat spares that we realised we needed. For the 3 day trip, a large storm front passes over me aw I care the boat single handed and face lightning and 45 knot wind squalls - while the anchor hold and how will I cope??? In this episode Assarain IV continues north from Castle Island in the Crooked Island group in the Bahamas. On arrival at Clarence Town, Long Island, the crew meets up with some other cruisers on the beach, who let us know about a local pig roast. The next day we join Tim and Toby for a drive up to see some of the sights including: - The Shrimp Hole....a local cavern that's home to a unique red shrimp. - Dean's Blue Hole, the (debated) deepest vertical blue hole in the world, descending down 220m from the surface. Dean's Blue Hole is home to many free diving competitions and is also a cool hangout, with a nice protected beach, jumpable cliffs, and blue water. After all that fun, we continue to Georgetown, where we pick up our new crew for the next couple of weeks. Meet...Jeannine's parents! Thanks for following! We waited for a weather window to sail this crossing and finally got one, here is what we do during a long passage aboard. Normally 60 nautical miles would take us 12 hours to sail but because we have Lenny and he needs a walk every 8 hours maximum we motored and sailed at the same time so we could go 7.5 knots instead for 5 knots. the crossing ended up taking us only 8 hours. We cool off in some crystal clear water after.

Magnus heads out in Peanut to do a spot of fishing and finds not only loads of dolphins, but also a giant tiger shark! We cruise around the nearby islands and end up at Whalers Bay. More fishing from Peanut. It’s a pleasant place to be. We take a good look at Sam’s (Ostrich) Island too. Here’s a bit of background information about Sam… Yugoslavian, Sam Ostojich, settled in the Pilbara in 1965 after first arriving in Australia in 1960. Sam's first encounter with Tidepole Island, a tiny island just off the Dampier coast, was when he visited it on a raft made of 44-gallon drums, which he had lashed together. Unfortunately, he hit a storm and was stranded on the island for days. Then he had the idea to make the island his own, so he began gathering nearby objects and turning Tidepole Island into his Yugoslavian paradise. After many years of working on the now-named Sam’s Island, his dedication was honoured by Hamersley Iron, which awarded him a 99-year gentleman’s lease. Hamersley Iron also constructed a water pipe to the island for him. Sam welcomed many daily visitors to his island paradise and was happy to have a yarn and share a meal and a brew. He was a truly inspirational man and a Dampier icon. Then it’s time for us to refuel on land and set sail on the first big leg of our trip back to Darwin. Thanks for watching. Tan Bark is a unique sail that is typically used on traditional wooden sail boats. The color comes from the egyptian cotton sails that were soaked in a solution from tree bark in order to reduce rot. If you are considering Egyptian Tanbark Mainsails, Headsails, Mizzens or Staysails please choose your sail designer carefully.
