Bei schwachem Wind bin ich mit meinem ILCA 7 unterwegs und nehme euch mit auf ein ganz besonderes Boot-Spotting hautnah an den spektakulärsten Schiffen vor Schilksee und Strande. Zuerst geht es zur gigantischen Malizia Explorer von Boris Herrmanns Team und kurz darauf kreuzt der fliegende GC32-Rennkatamaran Malizia 1 direkt vor meiner Linse. Nach einem Abstecher zu den Lee-Tonnen der ILCA 6 Regatta bahne ich mir meinen Weg durch die beeindruckenden Schleppverbände zurück, bevor ich zum Abschluss noch den federleichten M32-Katamaran NTT DATA der Sach-Brüder unter die Lupe nehme. *📊 DIE 3 RIESEN-BOOTE IM DETAIL (DATEN & FAKTEN):* *1. Malizia Explorer (Das schwimmende Labor)* • Typ: Ein robustes, eisgängiges Forschungsschiff aus Aluminium. • Abmessungen: 26 Meter lang und 7 Meter breit. • Mast: Ein unübersehbarer Mast mit 36 Metern Höhe. • Wissenschaft: Arbeitet eng mit dem GEOMAR in Kiel zusammen für Einsätze in der Arktis und Antarktis. • Technik: Ein automatisiertes „Ocean Pack“ im Bug misst CO2-Werte, Wassertemperatur und Salzgehalt. • Liegeplatz: Das riesige Schiff liegt zur Kieler Woche direkt vor Strande. *2. Le cinquième jour, visite de la réserve de petite Terre, ce fut encore une journée au paradis, après l'enfer de la Souffrière. Nous avions choisi la société Awak Guadeloupe qui possède aussi un bateau à fond de verre mais même sans cela, nous en avons pris plein les yeux. Petite Terre est formée de 2 île, Terre-de-Haut et Terre-de-bas (oui un peu comme aux Saintes). Seule l'île Terre-de-Haut est visitable, avec un nombres limités de personnes par jour. Le lagon héberge une réserve naturelle où se développe une faune incroyable. Not the most exciting bit of kit onboard… but absolutely critical. 🔧 Why This Matters If you think about it, jubilee clips are everywhere on a boat: Engine cooling systems Fuel lines Freshwater systems Bilge pumps Exhaust hoses Anywhere you’ve got a hose… you’ve probably got a clip holding it in place. Waking Up in "Crocodile Alley" ... This Volcano is Alive! 🌋🦈 We left the safety of Wilson Harbor and headed straight into a gauntlet of squalls, lightning, and shifting winds. Our mission? To cross the channel to Kolombangara, a massive dormant volcano known locally as the "Water Lord." The crossing was wild, but the ocean provided—landing both a Barracuda and a Wahoo before the sun went down. However, the real test came at the finish line. Our spotlight died just as we were navigating the narrow, reef-fringed entrance in total darkness. We finally dropped anchor, only to look out and see the unmistakable glowing eyes of a Saltwater Crocodile watching us from the shore. Despite the "neighbors," we woke up to a world of absolute magic. Kolombangara’s volcanic soil leaches rich nutrients into the sea, creating a vertical oasis. Freediving the steep drop-offs, we were surrounded by an explosion of life: Eagle Rays, sea turtles, and a rare encounter with a Hammerhead Shark. While the nature here is world-class, we’ve learned that the true heart of the Solomon Islands is its people. Toni and I packed an old fashioned picnic into a vintage wicker basket handed down from my mother — the kind that already feels like it holds a century of stories. Wanting the day to be special, we filled it with the finest delicacies and the best ten dollar bottle of champagne money can buy. We dropped the dinghy, the ever faithful Miss Annemarie, and motored toward the secluded curve of Peterson’s Point, determined to avoid any wandering Looky Lous. Once ashore, we spread our picnic blanket, unfolded our beach chairs, and settled into the quiet rhythm of the shoreline. Our feast unfolded in three indulgent acts. First Course — Hors d’oeuvres We began with blinis crowned with the “finest” caviar, Middle Eastern olives stuffed with blue cheese, and caprese bites made from heirloom cherry tomatoes, fresh basil, and mozzarella pearls skewered on toothpicks carved — in legend, if not in fact — from the noble American Chestnut. Second Course — Tea Sandwiches Next came the tea sandwiches: silky liver pâté layered with God’s own pickles and topped with muenster, all resting on pumpernickel. Beside them, crisp cucumber slices lounged atop my signature cream cheese and onion blend, finished with sprigs of fresh dill and tucked neatly between slices of rye. Third Course — Sweets For dessert, we indulged in chocolate French éclairs, coconut crusted macarons, and warm apple strudels — a trio that could tempt even the most disciplined sailor. Each course was accompanied by generous pours of champagne served in the finest crystal flutes we dared to bring aboard. A peaceful afternoon at anchor suddenly turned into one of the most dramatic incidents I've witnessed in years. What I first thought was a catamaran anchoring too close to SV Impavidus turned out to be something far more serious. With nobody on board, the yacht had dragged its anchor and was drifting backwards across the harbour in strengthening winds—heading directly towards a line of old steel and concrete piles. I wanted to help. I lowered the dinghy and seriously considered going after her, but with around one-metre waves inside the harbour, 28-knot winds and gusts over 30 knots, attempting a rescue alone would have been putting my own life at risk. Instead, I tried everything else. • Repeated calls on VHF Channel 16. • Calls to the harbour authorities. • Long blasts on the foghorn. No response. Eventually another skipper contacted the marina, who alerted the Italian Coastguard. A large rescue RIB arrived and managed to prevent what could easily have become a total loss. Incredibly, during the incident the drifting catamaran also hooked my own anchor and dragged SV Impavidus from her position—something I only discovered later. It was one of those days that reminds us how quickly things can change at anchor, and why every skipper should understand the risks of dragging anchor and leaving a boat unattended. Mit dem Holzboot ist auch unsere Segel-Leidenschaft gestartet. Zwischen April und Oktober genießen wir also das Segeln auf der Knysna [ˈnaɪzna] (so haben wir unseren Kielzugvogel getauft, nach einer Stadt in Südafrika benannt). . Im Herbst 2023 haben wir uns einen weitern Traum erfüllt und uns eine Maxi 84 gekauft. Diese wurde von uns Ende Oktober 2023 nach Kiel überführt. Seit dem widmen wir uns im Winterlager auch diesem schwedischen Segelklassiker, im Sommer erkunden wir die Dänische Südsee. Dabei haben wir uns immer nach dem Motto gerichtet: Learning by Doing Auf diesem Kanal möchten wir Euch zeigen, wie wir stetig dazulernen, Fortschritte machen aber auch manchmal an unsere Grenzen stoßen. Getreu dem Motto: Es ist noch kein Meister vom Himmel gefallen.
