Friends arrived onboard last night which means routines change a little, schedules get busier, and time becomes tighter — but the challenge still continues. This morning started with a steady 48 minute bike ride covering 13.5km, followed by the usual healthy meals, water intake, reading, and the second workout later in the day. A mini adventure. We tested our Highfield Classic 290 Rib with our Epropulsion Spirit 1 by going from Gallows Point (Beaumaris) to Menai Bridge for a takeaway. Then we went under the Menai Bridge, through the Swellies, under the Britannia Bridge to the statue of Lord Nelson. We got back under the Britannia Bridge and about halfway through the Swellies before we had to tie up to a tree and wait for slack water. After a wait I rowed up the eddies to the Menai Bridge, from there we were able to gently motor out of the tidal stream all the way back. We used about 3/4 of both batteries.

► Founded just five years ago, the Astus Boat Club association now brings together around 60 Astus trimaran owners and has recently introduced a Trophy system rewarding participation and results in various regattas open to multihulls rated under the Multi 2000 rule. ► In this context, Pierre Breban, president of the association, invited me to take part as media crewman aboard the Golfe Morbihan Tour, an event particularly technical when it comes to current management. Currents can be extremely strong in this area, while numerous counter-currents can be found close to beaches, headlands, and rocks. ► So I joined Jean-Hubert Pommois, head of the shipyard, aboard his Astus 26.5, together with Jérôme, our helmsman. Organized by the SRV (Société des Régates de Vannes), this regatta is unique in that it brings together highly diverse fleets: classic rigs, foiling boards, monohull cruisers, dinghies, and of course cruising multihulls - 63 entries in total! ► Six Astus boats were entered in the cruising multihull category: four Astus 20.5s, one older-generation Astus 22, in addition to our Astus 26.5. ► A graduate of Sciences Po Paris, 31-year-old Nicolas Marcillaud could have become a senior civil servant… but in the end, it was his taste for adventure, combined with a strong fascination for ice, that led the young man toward a particularly ambitious project: sailing around the Arctic. ► In other words, a mini circumnavigation of 9,000 miles by linking the Northwest Passage and the Northeast Passage. Each route has already been sailed individually, but never both in a single season. That is precisely the challenge Nicolas has taken on. ► With a set of specifications requiring the ability to beach the boat - or even haul it onto the ice - while still prioritizing seaworthiness for ocean crossings, light-air performance, and ease of maintenance, the adventurer chose Paradox, a 10-meter trimaran. Extremely light (2 tons) and minimalist (no engine), this multihull was built in 1997. We discovered her at the end of a refit in Hennebont, near Lorient. Scopriamo da vicino il processo produttivo, l'ingegnerizzazione e l'attenzione ai dettagli che rendono queste barche performanti, affidabili e adatte anche alle regate. Siamo andati direttamente nel cantiere Beneteau di Lubiana per vedere come vengono prodotte le barche della linea Beneteau First, una delle gamme più apprezzate da chi cerca prestazioni, qualità costruttiva e velocità in navigazione. La prima cosa che colpisce è la straordinaria precisione con cui ogni fase della produzione viene pianificata ed eseguita. Ogni componente della barca viene progettato, studiato e ingegnerizzato in anticipo. Nulla è lasciato al caso e ogni soluzione tecnica viene sviluppata per garantire il massimo delle prestazioni e dell'affidabilità. Le First sono imbarcazioni pensate anche per la regata, motivo per cui ogni dettaglio deve essere realizzato secondo standard estremamente elevati. Dalla struttura della carena ai rinforzi interni, tutto viene verificato e ottimizzato per ottenere una barca veloce, sicura e durevole nel tempo. Un aspetto particolarmente interessante riguarda la lavorazione della carena. Ogni punto in cui vengono effettuati fori per scarichi, prese a mare o altri accessori viene rinforzato in modo specifico rispetto alle aree circostanti.
