Baja California Sur is a magical place, where the ocean is still wild and full of life. This expedition has been created to take you further offshore for the chance of encountering some of the ocean's most spectacular creatures. We will be based in La Ventana, a small town on the Gulf of California, facing the majestic Isla Cerralvo. We will be focusing on searching for the epic Mobula Munkiana aggregations. These amazing animals come together for mating and feeding before migrating out of the Sea of Cortez into the Pacific Ocean. The abundance of food in this area is one of the primary reasons for the abundance of life, and as usual, where there is food, there are predators. We will often travel up to 40 miles offshore or up and down the coast to hopefully encounter incredible animals.

We were supposed to retire and sail off to quiet, palm fringed islands where warm breezes drift through the rigging and the only agenda is deciding which anchorage looks prettiest. But that’s the price of cruising with a timetable—life has a way of reminding you who’s really in charge. A handful of unexpected health issues surfaced, forcing us to change course. Now the priority is getting ourselves patched up so we can get back to the retirement we envisioned. Even so, life hasn’t been all that bad. We’re living at Fernandina Harbor Marina—Front and Center—and making the most of it while we work through these challenges. My wife, daughter, and I flew down to Orlando, Florida to do something I've been wanting to do for a while, snorkeling with manatees. It was late in the season so the chances were a little slim since we only had two days to adventure. We visited a couple of different springs and eventually were able to find some in Crystal River (the manatee capital of the World!). We spent more time in Denali National Park than anywhere else in Alaska. We did hardly anything the average Denali tourist does and the average Denali tourist does hardly anything we did.

This Hallberg-Rassy 43 MK I, "Lilia", is a very fine example of a meticulous maintained and well-built bluewater cruiser thoughtfully designed and well equipped for long-distance sailing. "Lilia" is no racer, but she offers great performance and is remarkably easy to handle short-handed, even in demanding conditions, thanks to her electric-hydraulic in-mast furling mainsail, electric-hydraulic furling genoa, hydraulic backstay, spinnaker gear, and electric winches—all with controls centralized in the secure and well-protected center cockpit with solid windscreen. Her teak-laid decks remain in excellent condition and reflect the care she’s received over the years. She is furthermore equipped with a 55hp diesel engine, bow thruster, folding propeller, inverter, solar panels, Raymarine navigation pack including radar, water maker, dinghy with outboard, bimini, sprayhood, etc. Also worth mentioning is the generous fuel and water tankage which is quite handy when you’re longer at sea. Hallberg-Rassy yachts are renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship, and "Lilia" is no exception. The interior is finished in a light mahogany with a matt silk finish, complemented by a classic teak-and-holly cabin sole. She features a spacious owner’s cabin aft with ensuite head and separate shower, a forward guest cabin with V-berths, a second bathroom with shower, a large saloon with settees and central table, a practical C-shaped galley, and a large navigation station.
