As I am a sailor, as I live in Nova Scotia, and as I am an Eric Hiscock fanboy, any book that can combine the first two and receive a glowing foreword from the third, has got to be OK by me.  As is always the way when discovering the most amazing sailing book you have ever read, I am not sure where it came from- but it's either a gem from the original Mariner's Library as it was donated to me; OR is one of the many sailing books I am now vacuuming up from all the marina and club house launderettes I visit, as I succumb to the feeling of responsibility to  bolster the variety and depth of the Mariner's Library while it's in my charge! Either way, it appeared on my desk and one look at the words written by Eric Hiscock and I was hooked!  As I read I discovered a wonderful narrator with a keen eye for not only the detail of life at sea but an ability to express what it FEELS like to be at sea.  The author's description of waiting out gales at sea-anchor in their tiny boat left me with clammy hands, as a hundred similar personal experiences were conjured to mind. The fact that I had not ever heard of this boat, the authors or their incredible voyage further underlines how important it is to breathe new life into these archives of incredible sailing experiences and learning by converting these lost tomes into publicly accessible podcasts.  If you agree please consider supporting the podcast with a donation of $5 per month. Chris Hrones from Carbon Yachts was one of the only brands at SCIBS taking advantage of the new rules around offering sea trials for the first time. Each day the young crew could be seen taking the foiling Candela C-8 out for a spin, flying up the Coomera River at Sanctuary Cove like a computerised bird with amazed guests on board and watchers eagerly recording from the sidelines. This burst of activity to mark the Queensland debut of the Candela C-8 gave visitors a taste of the mix of activities on offer at Cannes Yachting Festival, where prospective owners and media are invited on irresistible shakedown cruises that really give them something to write home about. The forecast promised a variable 2 to 4 It was one of those days… when I was just as undecided about my course as the weather was about its own. After about an hour under sail, things began to clear. The wind freshened, steady and kind. And for a time—it was joy. The variety of weather I’ve encountered this day was nothing short of spectacular — like a week, or even a month of impulses, all compressed into a single day. Passing Selsey Bill on the outer route in over 20 knots of wind was a first for me — one I won’t forget. After rounding the cape, I shook out the reefs in a perfect breeze, reaching smoothly toward Portsmouth as darkness settled. Am nächsten Tag nutzen wir den starken Wind und segeln mit viel Speed in einem Rutsch bis nach Norfolk. Dort treffen wir eine schwere Entscheidung: Die Zeit läuft uns davon – wir müssen die Weiterfahrt schweren Herzens abbrechen. Begleite uns auf dieser intensiven Etappe unseres Abenteuers, zwischen Eiseskälte, Sturm und rasanten Segelpassagen.

We set sail from Vaasa, leaving the home harbor of Vaasan Merenkyntäjät Ry behind us. The plan had been ambitious: to reach the Mediterranean by autumn. But as often happens at sea, the journey itself reshaped our plans. There were so many fascinating places along the way—especially in the Netherlands—that we found ourselves lingering, exploring, and enjoying the voyage without rushing. In the end, we made it as far as northern Spain, to the city of Avilés, where we decided to spend the winter of 2025–26. The crossing of the Bay of Biscay turned out to be one of the most memorable and significant passages of our trip—also the longest continuous sail we had ever attempted. Another demanding leg was the passage from Cuxhaven to Den Helder, which kept us at sea for two nights.
