Majestic. Awe-inspiring. Life-changing. Incredible. Vast. Grand. These words are associated with the Grand Canyon by those who merely look at it from afar. For those of us who experience the Grand Canyon from within, we have different words... PAIN. HEAT. SQUIRRELS. THIRST. HUNGER ...and most importantly... BAD JOKES. Yes, these are the adjectives of those who have hiked within the canyon. This is unequivocally the truth. I'm not being dramatic when I tell you this. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar. Trust me. I know what I'm talking about. ~ Ben, Tambi, & Molly | L/V BURT | "SAILBOATSTORY" [ SUPPORT THE CHANNEL ] https://patreon.com/sailboatstory | Join the crew and help keep the cameras rolling! https://paypal.me/sailboatstory | Make a donation and help upgrade our camera gear! Join Peter and Tom sailing California, Mexico and the Sea of Cortez! In this episode, little Bohemia is caught up in a fierce thunderstorm, the kind that rattles your bones! After a few generous G&Ts to recover, we sailed into Bahia de Los Angeles, the only town (well, village) for miles around to stock up on supplies ahead of the approaching hurricane. If you like our videos and want to support Bohemia's bar tab, you can make a contribution at http://www.patreon.com/sailingbohemia. Peter and Tom are gay sailors who learned to sail relatively recently in the San Francisco Bay, before casting off the lines to cruise Mexico and sail around the world! Thank you!

This is what happened to us in race 4 of the 2022 Medway Yacht Club Squib summer series. The race wasn't as exciting as last week but the sail itself was epic. We make these films just for fun, and we hope that you have enjoyed watching them however we have been asked on a couple of occasions now if we have a Patreon account. We don’t want to do that at this stage as we feel it would turn the channel into a business, and as we said at the beginning, this is all just for fun. However if you would like to support us and feel you could help contribute to the cost of making these films then you can do that via our PayPal account here. A big thank you to everyone that has already done this, its a great help. https://www.paypal.me/TheFoxwellFamily And a big thank you to everyone that has supported us so far, its very much appreciated. After spending a little bit too long in the country that we loved so much, we were fined for overstaying our visa and given a strict deadline to leave the country with only 7 days notice. That’s not a lot of time to prepare for a 4000nm ocean crossing! We rushed around Panama City for a week, buying enough food to last us six months, filling our boat up with diesel and preparing all our paperwork and visas for French Polynesia. At last, I think we're ready to set sail! Welcome back to Nomad Boatbuilding! In this episode of Building Gannet, we dive into the art of spiling—a crucial (and often misunderstood) technique in wooden boat building. Whether you're a beginner or looking to refine your skills, this step-by-step walkthrough will show you how to pattern for planks when building a glued lapstrake plywood sailing dinghy. You’ll learn: What spiling really means in traditional boatbuilding Why typical spiling methods don’t work well for lapstrake planking How to accurately record plank shapes and attitudes Pro tips for fair lines, fitting techniques, and avoiding distortion Tools and tricks (like hot glue and battens) that make life easier This hands-on demonstration uses Gannet, our current dinghy project, to teach practical techniques for patterning, fitting, and cutting planks—without relying on elusive plank patterns in boat plans. 💬 Got questions about spiling or wooden boatbuilding in general? **VIDEO MAY NOT WORK ON MOBILE PHONES** Our passage to from the Galápagos to Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Chile, tried our perseverance like no other passage we'd experienced. The trade winds had more south in them than we'd anticipated, so for most of the passage we close-reached, sailing 55 to 75 degrees off the wind in 18 to 30 knots. This meant we spent most of our time heeled over hard, all the while bashing into 2- to 3-meter seas that were very close together. Some moments were challenging; others humorous (mostly because we both felt a bit delirious at times); and some were beautiful and raw. Fourteen days and 4 hours after we departed Galápagos, we dropped our hook in Anakena anchorage on the northern coast of Rapa Nui, one of the most remote inhabited islands on earth.
