With a father who went to 5 olympics as Flying Dutchman competitor initially and then as coach, Jon Bilger spent his early years around sailing. He bought is first boat after saving $250 and asking his dad to build him an optimist. In a P Class he then won New Zealand’s Tauranga Cup twice amongst a fleet of 120 dinghies that included young sailors such as Craig Monk. Then the move to the 470 and the Olympics followed along with competing in various European sailing regattas before the days of professional coaches. Jon was thrust into the Tag Heuer 1995 Americas Cup Team as navigator and it opened the door to his newly found passion for weather analysis. From there a decade with the Swiss based, Russell Coutts led, Alinghi Americas Cup syndicate, Jon was responsible for weather modelling for the 2003 and 2007 winning Americas Cup team before the loss in 2010 to Oracle. The weather technology developed for this team led to the model that Predict Wind is based upon today and is now used all over the world by everyday sailors. Our family sailing adventure this week was to an deserted island, North of Ponui Island in Ruthe Passage, Hauraki Gulf, Auckland. Ruthe passage is known for Kingfish, Snapper and Kina. On this weekend trip we found large crabs and a star fish in a rock pool, we called them our pets. Lucky the crabs didn’t nip us! We asked dad to take the GoPro underwater and try and see if he could swim with fish. He did find a few reef fish and plenty of kelp but the water was a bit murky after a recent storm passing through. At the end, we show you Blake’s remote control sailing boat (RC boat) that he purchased after saving for over a year to get. It is a Dragonforce 65, and he has named it Thunder. We take it sailing around local lakes when we are not out sailing on Opal. We are two brothers, aged 4 and 7, who love going on sailing family adventures - exploring the outdoors and finding super cool wild animals, bugs and marine life. So along with our parents, we’re sailing the world, exploring islands, and looking for interesting wildlife. We start our adventure sailing New Zealand but dream of sailing around the Mediterranean some day. We love our planet and want to look after our environment, so through our travels we hope other kids will feel inspired to care for our planet and wildlife too. We've loved our time in Antigua and would love to stay, but since our boat deal fell through suddenly and unexpectedly we've gotta keep it moving. After some pretty barbaric Covid swab tests, but before going home to pack back up everything own, we enjoy one last night by grabbing a small feast at Bodog Curry House. We appreciated their out of the box savory cocktails. We celebrated our last night at Jolly Harbour W Masala Mojitos & Stray Cats. This weekend we will head further South to the Grenadines to first quarantine and then (hopefully) survey another boat.

About the Boat ''SY Red Current'' is a Southerly 31 with the construction of GRP and rigged as a sloop with Aluminium Mast. Her LOA is 31 feet and she has a beam of 10 feet with a draft of 7 feet. She also has an electric swing keel which makes her draft very shallow and easy to enter in shallow water. Camelot was another great island - bigger and more to explore, with paths less well-marked (which made it more fun for Chloe than me, honestly!) While walking around we saw that friends of ours from the marina were staying at a mooring ball on the south side of the island. That looks like fun - but with Chloe, we'd definitely need to bring our tender to get her to shore to have her potty breaks. Around noon, we thought it was time to leave. The weather was perfect and it was tough to say goodbye, but rain and wind was expected the next day, and I really didn't want to dock at the marina in those conditions. So, off we went. A straight shot up the Canadian Middle Channel, then north to The Landing at Ivy Lea. Easy run, maybe 30-40 minutes. We talked a lot about the trip - what went well, and what needed improvement - but we agreed that with each day, we got better and better at docking, communicating, and handling the boat. That's a big deal. Overcoming challenges together is one of the reasons we bought Aqualibrium in the first place! I think a "Cruise in Review" video is in order to really outline the highs and lows of the trip, and things we'll do differently next year, because there will be a 2022 cruise! And so, back at the marina, where we woke up to a cold, rainy, and windy morning....it always pays to look at the weather forecasts, because we came back at the right time. What an awesome cruise!
