A storm was coming as we sailed into Auckland Harbor. We thought we'd hide from it in a local marina but conditions on the dock proved worse than conditions in the bay! After three rainy days in Auckland we'd had enough wet weather and sailed to Waiheke. Waiheke is a beautiful island a short sail from Auckland harbor with a couple little towns, an old WWII battery and plenty of sheep for comedic relief. Oh.. and I almost forgot Waiheke has the absolute BEST gelato we've had in all of NZ. The core of "Family Circus" is Chris (Dad / Captain), Sayo (Mom / Admiral), Aya (First Officer / Deckhand) and Miya (Baby / Stainless Polisher). After many years in business in Vancouver we were tired of life inside the box and wanted to make a change, we just weren't exactly sure what would be next. In July of 2016, when Sayo was six months pregnant, we decided (somewhat at the last minute) to fly to New Caledonia for one last holiday before the baby was born. We sail a very short distance from Shroud Cay to Warderick Wells Cay, a large island within the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park and home to the park's headquarters. We spend several days moored near Emerald Rock, exploring the beautiful island and it’s surroundings. We hike a couple of trails, taking us through mangroves and creeks, to blow holes and of course the top of the famous Boo Boo Hill, the highest point of the island with stunning 360 views. After the neighborhood sharks stop by to say hello we break out the paddle boards for the first time and go for a snorkel around Emerald Rock. We travel 13nm from Warderick Wells to Cambridge Cay. From our mooring ball off this quaint island, snorkeling the ‘sea aquarium’ and exploring the caves of Rocky Dundas are just a dinghy ride away. A few days later we head another 13nm South to Big Majors and Staniel Cay. We had planned on checking out Thunderball Grotto, but the current wasn’t cooperating so we chilled out at the bar at Staniel Cay Yacht Club, not only a popular hang out for people but apparently nurse sharks too! We were anchored near pig beach so we could see when boat loads of tours would stop by to see the insta-famous swimming pigs. At times there were literally hundreds of people there so we decided to go early one morning before anyone else arrived.
