Seeing a red kite soaring high in the sky hunting or being opportunistic is a true delight! Once a very rare bird, hunted close to extinction in the UK, thanks to successful reintroduction projects, these wonderful birds can now be seen in lots of places in the UK. The M40 corridor was one of the first re-introduction sites for these birds of prey. They are quite like the common Buzzard, but the red kite has more angled red wings that are tipped with black and a beautiful forked tail. Sometimes they can be seen hunting for food, but mostly red kites are in fact largely scavengers or flying high looking for opportunities, roadkill, newly fledged birds, and small prey like rabbits. Listen out for their ‘mewing’ calls, when the sun is shining and warm thermals help them soar high in the skies. Longer than my normal short films, not sure if it drags on a little? We sail her across from Pine Harbor in average weather as it looked to be the only weather window for about a week or so. Ambryn Island in Vanuatu is very special indeed. With its two smoking volcanoes and lush jungle covered hills it draws the attention of sailors from afar. But what makes it even more special, are its ancient tribal traditions still fully alive today. One of them is the Rom dance, practiced by the tribes from the North coast. The Rom dance is a rite of passage for young adults and it is shrouded in mystery and black magic practices. The young adult seeks the sponsorship of an elder that supplies him with a special mask and leads him in connecting with the spirits.

Sailing - Low Cost DIY Racing Computer. This is an update on the previous videos showing an embedded DIY racing computer. As you all know, costs have skyrocketed and we may be looking at trying to stay under $200 after this is all done LOL!. I worked on a lot of the project details with the China vendor that makes the GPS and Bluetooth modules. Note that they make the GPS modules for high-end drone manufacturers so the quality is top-notch. I asked them for the NRE to make a Bluetooth and GPS system on a board so that I could develop an app to connect to the system. The NRE is about $5K USD so that is on hold for right now. So to keep the project moving I am working on a Flutter/Dart app and this video shows the prototype. The app will be able to use either GPS L1/L5 of the future BLE and GPS module. Note that most of the new iPhones and Android phones at the high end are waterproof. Let me know your thoughts and as soon as the season starts again in April I will start testing. Class legal? NO but . . . I am looking into if I can force the phone to be in magnetic compass mode ONLY and turn off the GPS for the class rules. Will they accept this? Time will tell but eventually, this is going to come up. We are an Aussie couple with a dream to sail around the world. We bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 in October 2023 with zero sailing experience but the belief that we can do this.
