Join me, Ryan the Rogue Rigger on my journey of restoring a Mach 2 International Moth that I picked up earlier this year. I have been upgrading it with all the modern systems with out breaking the bank and taking you along for the steep learning curve of learning to sail this Tasmanian devil of a boat. I have dreamed of owning one of these since they first came out back in 2008 when I got to take one for a spin. It was an unreal experience/feeling that I have been chasing ever since. At the time they were crazy expensive to buy and not in my budget. These days they are still crazy expensive to buy new, now there are a lot of older moths on the second hand market that are relatively affordable (Less than a Laser/ILCA in this case). For those of you who don't know, an International Moth is a single handed 11 foot long hydro foiling sailboat. These boats literally fly over the water on two hydrofoils doing speeds 2-3 times the speed of the wind. This is my video of my first Moth regatta, the High Sierra Regatta that is hosted by the Fresno Yacht Club at Huntington Lake California. Huntington Lake is located at about 8000 feet above sea level adjacent to the world famous Yosemite National Park. This regatta has been around for ever and is a definite bucket list event. It is run over two weekends, the first being the dinghy fleets and the second weekend for small keel boats. Im only doing the dinghy weekend. I have wanted to do this event for a long time, my free time never lined up as I'm usually headed to the gorge or doing a 505 world championship. In October 2020, I bought my Grinde — but the story began when I was eighteen, sailing this Danish 27-footer across the IJsselmeer. Designed in 1976 by Peter Bruun, the Grinde is wide for her length, solidly built, and carries deep ballast. She isn’t sleek or fashionable. She’s built like a whale — full, steady, powerful. When the dream of sailing around the world began to take shape, one question kept returning: Can I really do this in a 27-foot boat? Instead of figuring it out alone, I organized a Grinde weekend in Enkhuizen. Owners sailed in from across the Netherlands. We compared boats, shared modifications, talked about heavy weather, ballast, rigging, and offshore experience. What started as a small gathering is now a growing annual meetup — a place where knowledge and stories are exchanged openly. Standing there, surrounded by these boats, I realized something important: The real limit is rarely the boat. It’s what we believe about the boat. As we continue the journey north, we sail from Lady Elliot Island across to Pancake Creek, chasing shelter from some strong winds… and stumble into an absolute exCRABaganza. Armed with paddleboards and plenty of determination, we push our way through the creek systems – battling wind, working hard, and hoping it all pays off. Safe to say… it did. What followed was a crabalicious few days, with big rewards, and a proper feast aboard ARGO. Wir heißen zwar Segler-Club Oberspree e.V (SCO), liegen aber an der Unterhavel. Das der SCO an der Unterhavel liegt ist Umständen zu verdanken, die typisch für die Berliner Geschichte sind. Gegründet wurde der SCO am 24. Juni 1906 im Restaurant "Zu den drei Linden" in Grünau. 1912 wurde die Große Rohrwall-Insel in der Dahme, am südöstlichen Rande Berlins gepachtet, gleichzeitig wurde der SCO Gründungsmitglied des "Deutschen Segler-Bundes", der später in den Deutschen Segler-Verband aufging und stellte dort für zehn Jahren mit Robert Höfer sogar den Bundesvorsitzenden. Der Große Rohrwall nun ging nach dem Krieg in die Verfügungsgewalt der DDR über, was die im westlichen Berlin wohnenden Mitglieder motivierte, 1954 den "Segler-Club Oberspree e.V." in West-Berlin zu gründen. 1966 konnte ein Grundstück in Berlin-Kladow gepachtet und wenige Jahre später mit einem in Eigenarbeit erstellten Clubhaus ausgestattet werden. A rainbow outside Strangford Lough Yacht club at the start of the day reminded us that it only takes a little bit of sun shine to brighten up a cold and rainy day.
