A promotional video I directed, filmed and edited for Diving Matrix, a scuba diving school offering Raid certifications - based in the UK and Malta. This was a really interesting project as it took place in two very different locations. It began whilst I was taking a technical diving course with Diving Matrix in Malta - these are the bright, sunny looking shots! The second half was filmed in a cold, murky, British quarry called Vobster. Here I was able to film a Deco 50 course, and participate in two days of VMS RedBare CCR rebreather try-outs. The client was after a video with tempo, something that was exciting and demonstrated the fun, quality, and adventure of their brand. Using music with a high tempo and matching the transitions of clips with the beat of this music created the driving feel. Structurally, the audience is taken through the sequence of a dive: prep/checks, entering the water, descending, diving and surfacing (Despite being filmed in two countries). Combining this structure with that fast tempo takes you on the story of a real dive with Matrix, and the excitement and adrenaline of their courses comes across effectively. On a beautiful Autumn Equinox in the northern hemisphere, 21st of September, Sailing vs Plastic aboard SV KARMA left Netherlands bound to Madeira. Underway the destination turned to Lanzarote, Islas Canarias, which took us 19 days to complete. This first chapter brings you to liveaboard life, plastic challenges on board, sailing insights in rough and not-so raugh conditions and shows the beauty of our oceans and nature when allowed to happen and left to their own elements. Sailing vs Plastic is a 15 months journey on where we will sail on, at least, two different sailboats, from Netherlands to New Zealand, on a journey that aims to bring awareness about plastic pollution and carbon footprint. To do that, we undertake objectives and challenges, such as the accumulation of all plastic personally used by the author, plastic debris (microplastics) survey in each country visited, connecting and getting to know local environmental communities or government departments, and many others. Before you drink it clean it!!…………. On this video we show you how we sanitize the Freshwater System that we just finished installing on Reverie after installation. See EP 59 to see how we installed a Vetus freshwater tank. There are things you have to keep in mind to ensure you always have clean potable water available in your boat. These are: Disinfecting When using a Freshwater system for the first time, disinfect the tank, lines, pumps with a solution of bleach in water (1:1000 or .13 fl oz per gallon). Circulate this disinfecting mixture through the fresh water system. Remove the solution and rinse the tank with clean fresh water. If using an existing system… Cleaning Clean the inside of the tank with water and soda (2 oz/ 3 gallons). Rinse the tank with clean tab water. At the beginning of every season Disinfect the Vetus tank and prevent the growth of algae at the same time by filling the tank with a solution of clear vinegar in water (1 : 20). Leave the vinegar solution in the tank for at least 24 hours, the longer the better. Drain the solution and rinse the tank as follows: First rinse with clean fresh water, then with a solution of baking powder and clean water (2 oz. / 3 US gallon) and then again with clean tap water. TIPS on Filling the Tank Fill the tank with clean tap water. Always run water through the pipes from the tap on shore or the jetty before filling the tank. You never know how old the pipes are or the quality of the water at any given marina or country, so I would advise you to use an inline water filter whenever possible. In previous episodes I showed you how I ran new water lines and installed a new water pump. Episode 7: Bronze magic Our brass Instruments needed serious cleaning and we decided to run a test of 2 different solutions. One was Ketchup to polish and clean the brass. The second was a mixture of Hydrochloric Acid and flour. There is a clear winner here and it was a fun test to run while also improving the look of our boat. It doesn’t take much sometimes, a few small boat projects here and there to beautify our space. We also went for a walk to expel some pent up energy and found serenity in the Montenegro woods by an ancient church. Picked up a dead minnow who had probably been chased up there trying to escape being eaten only finding himself in another sad situation. Episode 031 Deep Water Cove – we guess the clue is in the name! No kidding, it is deep and what does Adam do…well goes snorkeling of course! We are in awe of this place. We have sailed to this place a couple of times over summer and each time we’ve seen something special. The first time we had dolphins visit us for over 2 hours as they hunted for food and put on a display. The second time, we were visited by a manta ray who swam around for a few hours. Deep Water Cove is the last anchorage before Cape Brett on the Bay of Islands side and is open to the ocean so it’s no surprise the treasures of the ocean visit here. It’s also a place where you can do the walk to the Cape Brett lighthouse (which we attempted but alas it was too hard!). Alongside its natural beauty, what makes this place even more special is the rāhui (prohibition) that was placed in 2010 (and continues today) due to depleting fish stocks so you can’t fish or take any aquatic life or seaweed from this anchorage. The result of this rāhui speaks for itself as you will see during Adam’s snorkeling adventure and what can be achieved when we allow regeneration to occur, making Deep Water Cove a true little New Zealand paradise. After a few years of studying and working hard we decided it was time to make a change. We needed a change that would allow us to spend more time together, give us a better work/life balance, and the freedom to travel. While we still had time on our side, we wanted to use it to live rather than use it to chase money. Learning to sail was the answer. In December 2021 we moved onboard Te Tāiko, a Chico40, and since then we have been so fortunate to explore many of New Zealand’s pest free islands and its beautiful anchorages. With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore.
