The Scillies (or Isles of Scilly) lie out in the Atlantic, 30 miles west of Lands End and are the most western part of England. They cover an area of over 50 square miles, yet comprise only five inhabited islands, with the largest just 3 miles wide. However, there are hundreds of rocks - most of which are exposed at low tide. The tidal range is about 5m (16ft) They also have a fearsome reputation as ship killers: Sir Cloudesley Shovell led his ships and 2000 men onto the rocks in 1707 (all drowned), the Torrey Canyon (creating the world's first major supertanker pollution incident) and more recently the Ceta ran aground on St Marys, 20 miles off course with the helmsman asleep at the wheel. Wrecks there are aplenty... The pilot guide for the islands warns, "Apart from the obvious dangers of any group of islands strewn with rocks, mostly unmarked, large areas of shallow water and strong and often unpredictable currents and tide races, it also lacks an anchorage that is secure in all weather..." Although only 100 miles from my home in Plymouth, passage to the Scillies is usually difficult. Not only does it mean sailing into the prevailing winds, but fog and gales are more frequent here than elsewhere in the English Channel. That's because the Scillies are at the junction of two weather systems, one that affects the Irish Sea and the other the English Channel. It doesn't take much of a humidity difference between the two to produce fog, while strong winds can blow down from Scotland or straight in from the Atlantic. On this trip, in early September 2019, we cheated, as fortunately we had been invited for a few days sailing by friends Pip and Debbie, who were already in the Scillies on their 43ft catamaran. So it was a quite painless train and then ferry ride to St Marys, the islands capital. First stop was Old Grimsby on Tresco and then we meandered round the islands anchoring wherever it was sheltered from wind and swell. The most westerly inhabited island is St Agnes, which has a fun little maze, at least 250 years old, built on the site of an even older one by a bored lighthouse keeper in the 18C. Green Bay on Bryher is a favourite anchorage for multihull sailors, as it is completely safe in all winds and we could dry out level on a sandy beach. We were then able to walk from island to island at low water - keeping a careful eye on the incoming tide! In March 2019 we had left our Skoota28 powercat - our winter cruising home - safely ashore in the Bahamas. To our horror the day after we arrived in the Scillies we learnt that a massive hurricane was heading towards the Bahamas. So for the next few days we were glued to our phone as Dorian strengthened and grew closer to Skoota. Eventually, via the weather aps, we saw that the eye went right over the boat with winds of over 200mph, so it seemed inevitable that we had lost Skoota. As we left Crow Sound, a pod of dolphins came leaping out to greet us, which we took as a good omen for the rest of the trip. running downwind under spinnaker alone, it's the only way to sail! Mid way between the Scillies and the Lizard is the Wolf Rock, so named as it "howls" when a big sea is running. Fortunately, like the Eddystone Rocks - the only other offshore danger in the English Channel, it is marked by a lighthouse which also serves as a good turning mark for shipping going either up the Irish Sea or east up the English Channel. Lizard Point, which at 50N is not only the most southerly point of mainland UK but also the start of the Atlantic Ocean - or end of the English Channel if you prefer. So it is not surprising that there are always tide rips, even some way off the actual headland. Although 15 miles further on, the Helford River is the first safe all weather harbour after the Lizard. We find the Helford Passage a bit crowded for our tastes, so we always try to go up river, past the world famous Frenchman's Creek to Tremayne Quay, a couple of miles further on. Here it is quieter and you can usually tie up on the east side of the quay and have a great BBQ on the quay's grassy bank. There is a small pool off the quay with sufficient depth at low water where keelboats can anchor safely, which is what we did this time, as we needed to stay afloat so we could make an early start next morning. 9am next day saw us going down river again and we sailed 40 miles home to Plymouth, still gently running downwind under spinnaker. A great trip, although obviously a sad one as now we knew for sure that we had lost Skoota. Thanks to Pip and Debbie (again!) In this vlog we sail past the Athos Peninsula, home to the monastic community of Mount Athos. The community of monks is enjoying the status of an autonomous region holding the combined rights of a decentralized administration, a region and a municipality, sort of a state within a state with around 2000 monks. Although part of Greece, the European Union and the Schengen Zone, Athos has its own 'laws', making it impossible and strictly illegal for any woman to visit the Peninsula. Weird right? Apart from not allowing women, men also need a special permission to enter, sailing past is only allowed to around 500m from shore. Due to this special status and extreme secrecy, not too much information makes it out of this highly controlled state, which makes it even more interesting right? There are some 'documentaries' but having seen the Netflix one, trust us, they only show what they want the outside to see, which surely is also part of the reality of the Athos community, i.e. being, dedicated monks, living in harmony with God and nature, praying, maintaining, restoring the buildings, libraries and riches of the Orthodox church, but also keeping newer development away from this pristine piece of nature. What is not shown, are the luxury mansion like new build houses, the large solar panel arrays around them etc. This makes one wonder, if the monks really aim to stay cut from the outer world distractions and concentrate on and simple life. Why do they need, in addition to the monasteries, large mansions with oversized solar panels, tv's etc.? Where does the money come from? Is their holy community also highly unequal? Voici le 10e épisode de Prendre le large, une chaîne YouTube suivant les aventures des Québécois Guillaume et Amélie sur leur voilier Evasio. La Floride, l’État du soleil, nous accueille en beauté. Nous avons notamment passé d'excellents moments à Walt Disney World, à rire et à nous émerveiller comme des enfants! Mais les choses se sont corsées par la suite. Nous avons dû demeurer enfermés dans le bateau pendant 6 jours pour laisser passer une météo assez moche merci : de la pluie, mais surtout de forts vents avec des pointes calculées jusqu'à 50 nœuds (93 km/h) ! This week we are settled at anchor in Pollença, Mallorca. We are surrounded by a large number of other cruising families. We are lent an anchor whilst we wait for our new one but that doesn't stop another boat anchoring too close and swinging into us. We attend Elaines birthday party with all the other cruisers. We get a number of jobs ticked off, winch service, diesel tank inspection, darken the windows, we welcome back our favourite Germans and have a 'songs from the shows' night. World Maritime Day Parallel Event in Barcelona, Spain - Day 1

November 30 - December 1, 2020 We are sad to leave this vibrant, charming and fun city of A Coruña but it was time to move farther southwest. We left in the late morning on what we thought would be a lazy light-wind day passage on the North Atlantic. But, as is rumored, the North Atlantic is unpredictable and the winds quickly shifted speed and direction while our parasailer is up and we surf a major wave at our record speed of 14.7 knots! We are relieved to arrive the quaint little town Camariñas after sunset, where we anchor in a bay that reminds us of Norway, find our own secluded little paradise, Niko catches his first fish of the trip and experience one of the most dramatic sunsets we had ever seen! We stop at the marina gas station to top up our deisel before we head out on the Bay of Biscay again. We started off with light winds, but speed wasn’t a problem with the parasailer up at an average of 7knots! At around 14:00, we get contacted by a fellow sailor by VHF. Bart, who we met in Viveiro thru a contact we met in Laber Wrach got in some trouble – His genoa “rope” stuck in his propellor! He wanted us to tow his boat to an anchorage 20nm away! He wasn’t in danger & his heavy steel boat would’ve put too much strain on our boat, so Captain Eivind advised him to sail with his main to the nearest anchorage. With 3 kids on board and me being seasick, it was a wise decision. Ps – he sailed safely to an anchorage in the end, stopping before us. Warming up ravioli. I was pretty optimistic that I could warm up some ravioli in these light winds. Can you tell I was concentrating hard here to not get seasick…. Well, it didn’t work. Right about here is where I am really starting to feel it, which wasn’t actually so strange since the winds had picked up and we were getting larger waves. I tried to keep a game face on, but the waves had gotten bigger and the food took way too long to heat up. The food came up not long after this video. I threw up after this…. ☹ The wind had picked up quite a bit as I was making dinner and we actually surfed a wave at 14.7 knots and then The wind then shifted. We needed to jibe, too, so we took down the parasailer and put the genoa up after that! Still sailing at 6 knots! Celebrating our top speed of 14.7 knots with Doritos, of course. Ok, the big wave already passed…think they were 3-4 meters high! Almost there with sunset at 18:35 20:30 – arrive camarinas Actually, we decide to stay one day to recover and to enjoy this peaceful little piece of Spain. It was also the first day of Dec, and therefore time to break out the Advents calendar and decorations. Small joys! Crazy to think that Christmas was quickly approaching and we had still not arrived the Canaries yet. But, we were thankful to be on the move southbound! Maybe we’d make it there by Christmas!? Dec 1, 2020 - 8:51 - We celebrated with a surprise in their Christmas calender & watching the first episode of of Norway’s Christmas advent program “Stjernestøv” And, it we found out it WAS quite a small labyrinth of streets. We could see traces of Camariñas history in every closed shop window where lacey items were on display. This sleepy fishing village is known internationally for its traditional bobbin lacework! That’s why we saw so many Tablecloths, bed linens, quilts, cloths, and even dresses in lace in every store window…The town was pretty vacant, but we were used to that by now in these Corona times. It was time we explore Camarinas nearby forest-beach, which reminded us so much of Norway. Dec 2, 2020 Join us in the next episode as we sail from Camariñas to Vigo around Cape Finnistarae on the rugged North Atlantic again while the dolphins distract us and we experience a broach! Whilst “stuck” in Porto waiting for the northerlies to pass through we decided to take a boat trip and go through Europe’s deepest lock…. A cruise along 60nm of the Douro River took us along the river, passing through deep locks, including the Carrapatelo Lock and up to a Quinta for a vineyard tour and some port wine tasting. All in all not a bad way to pass the time!
