La météo n'étant pas propice à la navigation, nous sommes partis durant 3 jours nous perdre sur les petites routes de la très belle région située entre Fès et Tanger, où une nature verdoyante en ce printemps nous en a mis plein la vue. Fès et Chefchaouen sont des incontournables d'un point de vue culturel et nous n'avons pas été déçus. Mais ce qui reste encore le plus magique, c'est de faire une rencontre au hasard d'une petite route : nous prenons un monsieur en stop pour une dizaine de minutes et nous voilà invités chez lui, en plein ramadan, reçus comme des rois par toute la famille. Abdelilah est fier de nous montrer sa maison, de nous parler de ses enfants et de l'école du village pour laquelle il fait partie de l'association des pères et des mères. Ils ont une belle infrastructure scolaire mais ils manquent de matériel didactique. De part mon métier d'institutrice, je suis particulièrement touchée par ce constat et nous échangeons nos coordonnées dans l'espoir peut-être de leur faire parvenir quelques cartons de matériel comme des livres de lecture en français. Actuellement, nous sommes toujours en contact via WhatsApp. Nous avons aussi apprécié les riads ; ces maisons traditionnelles typiquement marocaines, nichées au cœur des médinas et transformées pour la plupart en maison d'hôtes. Les nuits y sont magiques, particulièrement calmes, l'accueil fabuleux, pour un prix dérisoire … Le bon plan lors de vos étapes au Maroc. Entre Fès et Chefchaouen, nous contournons le lac du barrage El Wahda et croisons un nombre incalculable d'ânes ! Très utiles sur ces petites routes de campagnes et de montagnes, ils rendent bien des services à la population pour les trajets du quotidien, même jusqu'au cœur des médinas.   Touchés particulièrement par la gentillesse et l'accueil des marocains, nous gardons des images plein la tête de ce séjour au nord Maroc, aux paysages grandioses, très verts et où la nature semble encore si pure. Il est temps de reprendre Orion pour découvrir la suite de ce très beau pays. ► Pendant longtemps, les organisateurs de l’ARC ont été confrontés à des difficultés en ce qui concerne l’accueil des multicoques : dans un port, ces derniers prennent évidemment plus de place que les monos… Au final, le succès général de cette transat-rallye encadrée et la demande toujours plus pressante des propriétaires de catamarans et de trimarans ont conduit le World Cruising Club à organiser un deuxième rallye – l’ARC + –, puis un troisième – l’ARC January. Du coup, depuis que la pression sur les marinas retombée, les multicoques se font chaque année plus nombreux : ils étaient 33 en 2022, 37 l’an passé et 44 cette année ! ► Escale incontournable ou presque sur la route Atlantique au départ de l’Europe, Las Palmas a accueilli des milliers de marins pendant ce mois de novembre – c’est à ce moment-là que le régime d’alizé de nord-est se met en place. Parmi ces équipages, on a pu compter en tout 1 300 marins portant les couleurs de l’ARC (ARC et ARC +) à bord de 253 voiliers. Lors de nos visites sur les pontons, nous avons pu mesurer la révolution Starlink : un seul concurrent était équipé l’année dernière, contre 80 % de la flotte aujourd’hui… La qualité des connexions offerte par cet opérateur satellite permet de suivre efficacement les évolutions météo, de rester en contact avec la terre, et même de travailler comme au bureau ! Pour la première fois depuis que nous suivons des équipages au long cours, Vincent, à bord de l’Outremer 51 Piment Rouge, va partager sa transat avec nous grâce à ses vidéos que nous allons relayer. Autre spécificité de cette édition 2023 : les nombreux bidons de gazole frappés dans les filières : dans un contexte de vent très faible inhabituel pour la saison, les moteurs (autorisés avec malus pour la catégorie Multicoques) devraient être sollicités à bord de nombreuses unités. Après deux semaines de séminaires, de rencontres et d'inspections de sécurité, l'ambiance sur les quais s’est faite vraiment électrique lors des trois derniers jours avant le départ. Etude de la météo, avitaillement de frais, nettoyage des fruits et légumes – chacun a mesuré qu’il y avait un océan à traverser… Certains équipiers sont plus zens que d’autres : le marin le plus âgé de l'ARC, Joff Hutchinson, 89 ans, a déclaré : « Je navigue depuis 82 ans et j'ai toujours voulu traverser l'Atlantique. Il est temps de quitter l’Amazonie, la Guyane française, le continent Sud-Américain pour se diriger vers les Antilles. Avant d’en profiter, nous devons faire une escale à sec de 4 mois à Trinidad, afin de rentrer en toute sécurité en Belgique. En effet, Trinidad est « normalement » hors zone cyclonique ; il ne faut en tout cas pas s’aventurer davantage au nord en cette période. L’ouragan Béryl qui vient malheureusement de passer en est la preuve. Mais d’abord l’océan Atlantique nous attend pour une petite traversée de 4 jours et 4 nuits. Mon cousin David, qui nous avait accueilli en Guyane, se décide à la dernière minute à faire cette navigation avec nous. Après 2 jours d’acclimatation sous une houle plutôt forte, les 2 jours suivants sont beaucoup plus agréables et nous profitons tous des plaisirs de la voile et de retrouver une eau d’un bleu magnifique ! Après plus de 4 mois dans les eaux brunes de l’Amazonie, cela fait du bien ! On jette l’ancre pour une nuit à Tobago afin de profiter d’un beau snorkeling avant de repartir dès le lendemain pour Trinidad, où nous allons sortir Orion de l’eau. Une belle navigation, avec des changements de voiles, une mer un peu capricieuse, des dauphins, de magnifiques levers et couchers de soleil, et une chouette ambiance belge 😉 !

Le Wama 42 XL garantit d’excellentes performances grâce à une puissante double motorisation hors-bord essence ou inboard diesel et des foils. La vitesse max annoncée est ainsi de 42 nœuds (nous avons atteint 38 nœuds lors de notre essai à Cannes). Si les superstructures sont plutôt discrètes, elles parviennent à loger des aménagements confortables. Le poste de commandes est très séduisant, d’autant que le toit peut s’ouvrir. Dans les coques, le constructeur propose deux à quatre cabines. Conçue avant tout pour les loisirs nautiques, la plate-forme spacieuse à l’arrière offre un accès direct à l'eau. One of the biggest and costliest project in many yacht refits is new batteries. These days, most battery changes are by people moving from standard AGMs to Lithium, or making the change to a higher native voltage from 12v to 24v or 48v. We are making the change to a native 48v system and increasing the storage capacity to 55kwh in an effort to increase our cruising independence. Commercial marine batteries tend to come in standard sizes and are limited to 100ah or 200ah. Going the traditional route would require us to expand the space that holds by batteries by double or triple the physical space. Instead, we've opted to assemble the batteries ourselves, allowing us to choose the total voltage and capacity with a lot more flexibility. We imported CALB cells directly from China, and are doing the work to DIY our battery bank. In the end, we will get significantly more storage into a smaller space, for about 1/3 of the price. This is part one of the process. When we finish showing the entire process, we'll provide a dedicated page on our website with all the nitty, gritty details including the entire planning and importation process as well as the installation.
