Essa travessia foi o último trecho da viagem de Copenhagen na Dinamarca até Valência na Espanha a bordo do nosso veleiro de 28 pés, Libertas. A viagem foi realizada entre 18 de Setembro de 2024 e 12 de Novembro de 2024 concluindo 1700 milhas náuticas passando pela Dinamarca, Alemanha, Holanda, Bélgica, França e Espanha. In this episode, I started restoring the old wood that I removed from the boat a few months ago. Back then, the lower part was flooded for years, and the upper furniture was home to mice. For months I thought that when the time came, I’d just rebuild everything from scratch. But now, seeing how beautifully the original wood can be restored — how stunning it looks on classic yachts — I’ve changed my mind. I want to bring back every single piece I once took off the boat. I’m ready to spend the time and energy it takes. As for these particular bulkheads — first, I washed them thoroughly and removed the leftover glue from the insulation. Then I started sanding: first with 120 grit, then with 180. After that, I cleaned them twice with a teak cleaner, treated them with a brightener that perfectly evened out the color, and once the wood dried, I finished it with teak oil. I’m in love with the result. This evening I’m taking a quiet wander along the docks in Cherbourg, getting a feel for the marina and the boats gathered here. It’s a fascinating mix — very different answers to the same core problem: how to go to sea, and how to live out there safely, comfortably, and well. Along the dock we look at a Hallberg-Rassy 49, a custom French offshore boat, and an aluminium high-latitude expedition yacht. Each reflects a distinct design philosophy, and it’s always revealing to see how those ideas translate into real boats, in the real world. I also talk about meeting the team from Garcia Yachts aboard Osprey. Their curiosity and enthusiasm was a genuine pleasure, and on Monday I’ll be visiting the yard to look more closely at their work — including the Garcia 60 they’ve kindly invited me to explore. I’ll report back as soon as I can.
