In our last episode, reshared a nail biting 40 minute chase off the coast of Brazil, a suspicious boat that later turned out drug runners. This episode is the aftermath. We break down what happened, what we learned from our encounter, and how it changed the way we think about sailing safet, piracy risk, and self-defence at sea. This is an honest discussion about how cruising sailors can better prepare for the unexpected. It's about knowledge, awareness, and preparation. Leaping Into Lithium: https://www.practical-sailor.com/marine-electronics/leaping-into-lithium/ Lithium batteries are one of the most popular sailboat upgrades today—but they’re also one of the most misunderstood. In this Practical Sailor Saturday episode, we break down the three biggest mistakes sailors make when installing lithium batteries on sailboats, and why these errors can lead to damaged alternators, shortened battery life, and unexpected electrical failures. This is not a lithium sales pitch. It’s a reality check. We cover: • Why lithium batteries are not a drop-in replacement for lead-acid or AGM • How lithium charging can silently destroy alternators and regulators • Why cold-weather charging permanently damages lithium batteries • The truth about Battery Management Systems (BMS) and what they really protect • When lithium makes sense—and when it absolutely doesn’t If you’re considering a lithium upgrade, already have lithium on your boat, or are trying to decide between lithium and AGM, this video will help you avoid expensive mistakes and design a safer, more reliable electrical system. Topics sailors are searching for: lithium batteries on sailboats lithium vs AGM marine batteries sailboat electrical systems marine lithium battery mistakes alternator overheating lithium boat battery upgrades Subscribe for more Practical Sailor videos focused on real-world boat ownership, maintenance, and systems—without the marketing hype. We hope everyone watching is in the middle of a great holiday season. All we want for Christmas is for you to tell your friends and family about our channel :-) After spending a few days pinned down with bad weather, Steve and Robin head out of Bivalve and up the Delaware River. With a rainbow marking the entrance to the C&D Canal, Arabella makes her way through Chesapeake City and into the Chesapeake Bay. Then, it's a bit of a nerve wracking passage through dense fog into the safety of Annapolis, America's Sailing Capital. They are very grateful to have radar and AIS to help them get where they are going safely. They spend a rainy day checking out the Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park, meeting some new friends from the Severn Sailing Association, and checking out the annual Holiday Market. Stay to the end of today's video to check out Steve's interview with Matt and Jessica of MJ Sailing, who stopped by for breakfast and a tour of Arabella. They share stories from their journey building a performance catamaran, which they hope to finish soon. We know how that goes... Check them out at https://www.youtube.com/@MJSailing -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! In this episode we get to hitch a ride on one of the World's most amazing boat lifts: The Ronquieres Inclined Plane! 🔔 CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ➜ https://www.sailingbritaly.com/subscribe ⛵ Join our Patreon Crew here! ➜ https://www.patreon.com/SailingBritaly The Ronquieres Inclined Plane is a ship lift / boat lift / boat elevator on the Brussels - Charleroi Canal. It has a length of 1,432 metres and lifts boats through 67.73 metres vertically. It consists of two large caissons mounted on rails. Each caisson has a water depth between 3 and 3.70 metres. It can carry one boat of 1,350 tonnes or many smaller boats within the same limits. Each caisson has a 5,200-tonne counterweight running in the trough below the rails. It takes 50 minutes in total to pass through the 1,800 metres of the entire structure, including the raised canal bridge at the top end. We were astounded by the scale and ingenuity of this innovative structure. This video goes into quite a lot of detail regarding the engineering behind this ship lift, and has been created with the intention of answering many of the questions a viewer may have about the Ronquieres Boat Lift. It took over 60 hours of my time (Chris) to edit this one video! We would like to say a huge thank you to our Patreon Crew, who have been so instrumental in motivating us to keep spending so much time creating our videos over the years.
