Today’s adventure starts with a 5 hour road trip from Pattaya down to Koh Chang, where we jump aboard a Lagoon 400 catamaran for a beautiful sail through the islands of eastern Thailand. After a quick tour of the boat, we untie the lines and head out for an easy 10 mile sail south to Koh Mak. This part of Thailand has some of the most underrated cruising grounds in Southeast Asia — warm water, steady wind, and quiet tropical islands everywhere. Our destination is one of my favorite spots in the region… The Blue Pearl Bar on Koh Mak, an amazing little beach bar that’s perfect for watching the sunset after a great day on the water. Even better, the pups got to join us for the adventure, making it a perfect sailing day with the whole crew. If you’ve ever wondered what sailing Thailand is like, this is a pretty great example of a perfect day out here. ⛵ Boat: Lagoon 400 📍 Route: Koh Chang → Koh Mak 🌅 Sunset: Blue Pearl Bar 👍 Don’t forget to subscribe for more Sailing Doodles adventures around the world, including the upcoming launch of my new electric catamaran currently being built here in Thailand. We are now in season 7 In 2018 we left the UK to sail around the world slowly. After Brexit, a "Pandemic" and major heart surgery we are still sailing, documenting our travels and showing you what we have learned so far. The 7-10-7 Rule — An Old Boatbuilder’s Trick for Perfectly Rounding a Spar In this episode of Nomad Boatbuilding, I share a simple geometric method that replaces repetitive math when shaping spars by hand. Some people think wooden boat building requires complicated calculations. That can be true when designing boats — but building them is another story. In practice, geometry is often far more useful than math. The 7-10-7 rule is a straightforward way to divide the face of a square into proportional sections (7 units, 10 units, 7 units — 24 in total). By removing the corners at those marks, we quickly create an accurate octagon. Repeat the process and we move from square to octagon to 16 sides… and eventually to a smooth, round spar. In this video I cover: • How the 7-10-7 rule works • Why imperial rulers make scaling easy • Turning square stock into an octagon • Moving from 8 sides to 16 sides • Using (and making) a spar gauge • Applying the method to tapered spars • Why geometry beats repetitive calculation • Using the same principle for moldings, banjo necks, plugs, and even walking sticks This method works for squares, rectangles, trapezoids, and tapered spars. It’s one of those core pieces of traditional boatbuilding knowledge that makes shaping round forms efficient, accurate, and satisfying. 🌐 Website: https://www.nomadboatbuilding.com 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nomadboatbuilding 🛠 Support these videos on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/nomadboatbuilding If you value traditional boatbuilding knowledge and want to help keep these videos coming, consider supporting the channel on Patreon. ⏱ Chapters: 00:00 Introduction — What Is the 7-10-7 Rule? 00:43 Geometry vs Math in Boatbuilding 01:01 Turning Square Stock into an Octagon 01:24 How the 7-10-7 Division Works 03:56 Demonstration on a 6x6 Cross Section 06:24 From Octagon to 16 Sides 08:08 Applying the Rule to Rectangles & Trapezoids 11:17 Using the Rule on a Tapered Spar 12:37 Spar Gauges Explained 14:41 Imperial vs Metric Scaling 16:08 Making an Octagonal Plug for a Hollow Mast 17:38 Planing to the Lines by Hand 18:50 A Simple Tape Trick for Divisions 20:19 Beyond Boatbuilding — Banjos & Walking Sticks 21:14 Why This Method Works So Well #woodenboat #boatbuilding #sparbuilding #woodworking #handtools #traditionalcraft #geometry #DIYwoodworking #NomadBoatBuilding #MarkReuten

When we first arrived at this cabin in Port Protection, Alaska, we could already see something wasn’t right. Besides the two trees leaning on the roof, the structure had shifted slightly downhill and several of the foundation piers were leaning. Before we could even begin addressing the foundation problem, we had to remove multiple trees that had fallen against the structure. Once the trees were cleared, it was time to go underneath the house and figure out what was really going on. What we found was a complicated mix of leaning posts, sloped bedrock, and large voids in the ground where old roots and unstable soil made it difficult to place proper supports. With the structure sitting in a questionable position, the first priority became simple: stabilize the building before things got worse. Working in remote Southeast Alaska means solving problems with the materials on hand. Supplies can be days away, and every repair requires creativity and careful planning. In this video we install temporary supports and start mapping out a long-term plan for stabilizing the cabin’s foundation. The big question moving forward: Can this cabin be made safe again? Life and construction in Port Protection always keeps things interesting. Stay tuned for more episodes on as we tackle this project. Day 5 of our Atlantic Crossing, and we officially hit 25% of the passage — a full quarter of the way across. Last night was rough: confused seas, swell from multiple directions, and a whole lot of rolling. None of us filmed because honestly… we were just hanging on. Today was a mix of tired crew, boat projects, and fixing Dingo’s ear (again). Jade built a new double-sided “steampunk” ear splint out of leftover plexiglass, Brett did a full deck check, we battled our confused solar numbers, gave the dogs baths, and tried to keep the boat happy on wing-on-wing. Oh—and none of our devices agree what time it is anymore. Not a dramatic day, but a real one. Just the middle-of-the-ocean rhythm: naps, soft shackles, fruit baskets, frozen grapes, messy seas, and the slow march westward.
