Selon les statistiques du Cross Med entre 15 et 20°, un naufragé sur deux décède au cours des six premières heures passées dans l’eau et au bout de 18h, la mortalité est quasiment de 100 %; On peut donc accroître de manière substantielle ses chances de survie en portant une combinaison de survie .
